As a Hawaii-born Filipino whose parents are from the Philippines, I became familiar with both Tagalog & Illocano, but not enough to speak fluently. I recalled a co-worker mentioning Tagalog classes at McKinley High School's Community School for Adults, but at the time no classes were offered so I scoured other community schools online & found a listing at Waipahu. The price was $80 plus $20 school fees & the class met two nights a week for approximately two months. It's certainly a more affordable option from private tutoring & audits of college classes, but note that a minimum number of students is required for the class to run. Apparently there were six students who inquired about the class & although the minimum was 10 students, the school decided to run the class since this was the most interest the class had in years. Rowena was the instructor & I was blown away by her knowledgeable & effervescent demeanor. She definitely was the life of the class! For whatever reasons though, I ended up being the only student during the last few classes, but we continued with one-on-one sessions. Lucky me! My Tagalog vocabulary has vastly grown & I can piece together basic sentences to hold a short conversation. Being a stay at home mom, I can take care of this stuff. What I need is a professional preschool teacher who knows how to hold my child's attention enough to teach her something. I can teach my daughter too, but after a few minutes she goofs off and just doesn't take me too seriously. I found the perfect solution! At Planet Preschool, Tamara Jenkins, who's been a preschool teacher for 15 years. You might better know her as the "Kindergarten Coach." As of almost a year, she decided to open up her own preschool in her own home. She transformed her lower floor of her Kapolei home into a full fledged preschool. Her methods are to learn through play. Children will do art, play, sing with a specific curriculum in mind, so kids don't realize their learning because they're essentially playing. Genius idea! Mrs. Jenkins believes each child is different and thus learns at a different pace so she guides her teaching specific to each child's pace. If one child already knows her ABC's, then there's no need to waste a ton of time on it, so she'll move on to reading for that particular child. Her goal is to prepare your child for kindergarten but won't stop there. If your child wants to read or beyond, Mrs. Jenkins will take your child as far as your child wants to go. Currently she's got about 5 students in each class, so there's plenty of one on one time for each child. Each class will have a maximum of 10 students. You have a choice of either Tues and Thurs classes, Mon, Wed, and Fri classes, or daily classes. All classes start at 9am or 12:30pm. She's thinking about starting an afternoon class. I believe she's also starting a Kinderjam, a mommy and me class that incorporates "fun, exciting, and high-energy Music and Movement program that emphasizes the kinesthetic and tactile learning of pre-academic skills and concepts while promoting positive parent engagement." I was so desperate to find a preschool program that's not a daycare and not a parent participation preschool that was affordable. I feel so fortunate that I've finally found it! School tuition is about to increase a bit unless you enroll by May. Still affordable, but every bit of savings count. Because she's holding classes at her own home, that's why she can afford to offer classes such a low tuition rate. She's licensed so there's no need to worry. She doesn't have the fancy computers or traditional workbooks of typical preschool, but she makes it work. Check it out!

We enrolled our son at Quick Stars Tutoring this summer to help him prepare for advanced math placement for the upcoming school year, and it was such a great experience. From the very beginning, Tracy was wonderful. She took the time to explain the process, answered all of our questions, and got us scheduled quickly for an assessment. Throughout the summer, our son attended one-on-one tutoring twice a week. My son moved back to Hawaii from California late in his sophomore year. He was doing well in math while in California, but for whatever reason struggled to adjust to the his new learning environment. We have been doing 2 hours of math tutoring a week for about 4 months now, and he's so much more confident and comfortable doing math. He's able to complete his math homework with little assistance. And when I review it, there are very few corrections that need to be made. He's able to keep up with his classmates and complete his class work in the time allotted. He likes his teachers and looks forward to saving his tokens for spend at the Sylvan store. I love getting regular progress updates. Everyone who works there is very pleasant and professional. It's easy to reschedule lessons if something comes up. As pleased as I feel with his progress, his report card after one quarter really told the difference. His math grades are up in every measurable way. We're so happy with his progress, we're starting reading tutoring to make sure he is ready for 3rd grade. I'll say this...it's not cheap. But so far it's been worth the investment to have less tears and frustration at homework time. I no longer dread our evenings and that's priceless.

I can vouch and say that it gives your child confidence when they are learning math problems in school and they already know how to solve them. My other half went to pick up our son at school one day and as he waited outside his classroom, he noticed that our son finished his worksheet first, and then he went around his class and helped others too! I have two daughters who attend Kumon at Mililani Mauka. The atmosphere is extremely welcoming and…read morethe environment is very conducive to learning. The instructors do a great job at reaching my children and if there are ever any concerns, they communicate them with me. The owners have come out to my car on multiple occasions to provide me with strategies when working with my daughters at home. I've found these strategies to be extremely effective and useful. Kumon is an excellent supplemental academic program and everything about the Mililani Mauka location has been exemplary. I'm overly pleased with the service we receive and would recommend this location to anyone.
