My daughter has been a student at Quick Stars Tutoring for maybe 2 years now and we've seen her flourish. We weren't sure if our daughter was speech delayed or just shy, but we wanted to get her going when it came to academics in case she was somewhat behind or would have any difficulties in the future. We opted for quick stars because it seemed like a decent place to start her off, fees were reasonable, location was close to our home and it seemed to have good reviews. What we liked most about it was that the sessions could be 30 min, which we thought was perfect for a 3 year old when we were first starting out. We started out on weekdays but soon realized it was hard to make the sessions due to traffic and opted to switch to weekends. I am so thankful we did because our tutor on the weekends ended up being the most sweetest woman whom my daughter adored. Her name is Joanna. My daughter really took a liking to Ms. Joanna and enjoys going to see her for tutoring. Over the course my daughter learned a lot. At 4 years old she was reading simple reader books and at 5 years old can now read paragraphs at a time. Traci, who runs the business is not only the big boss but also a tutor as well. My son has been a struggling reader ever since he was entered elementary school (he is currently a 6th grader). As parents, my wife and I spent many long and frustrating evenings working with our son to try and improve his skills. Not only did we not see the improvements we were looking for, we felt he began to overly depend on us to get his work completed. I decided to send our son to tutoring and after researching several organizations, we picked Quick Stars because they provide 1-1 tutoring. We chose the 10 session plan for 30 minutes each. By selecting this plan, you get the 11th session free. I am so glad we enrolled our son with Quick Stars! After about 6-7 sessions, I noticed improvements in my son's decoding & comprehension skills. More impressively, my son has gained a sense of working independently, no longer depending on his parents to get his work done. Several times, I told him we need to get his Quick Stars homework done and he responded with, "I'm done already. I did it last night". My immediate thought was that most of the work was not done correctly and that I'd have to help him redo it. When I checked his work, most of his answers were correctly done. I had to check with my wife to make sure she didn't help him and that he indeed did it himself. This never (I stress, never!) happened before Quick Stars. My 2 oldest started attending when we were trying to prepare them for the Kamehameha test and the SSAT. Good thing we started this process early on because there is different strategies with both test and the staff there was able to well prepare them. There was also a tremendous amount of material that they were able to learn/sharpen. We tried to schedule tutoring after school and during breaks (in between sports, orchestra and extracurricular activities). The 1 hour sessions was a perfect amount of time, and they were able to take home study books to review. Very honored to say that every school they applied to, they were accepted to (Iolani, Punahou, Kamehameha, etc). Although I am sure they help a lot of children learn and feel confident, we opted not to work with them. During the assessment quiz, my daughter became uncomfortable because she heard another tutor complaining about their next client and how they didn't want to work with that person. Then when the person showed up, she said she overheard the tutor asking questions before finally saying do you even know what a square root is? I know the conversation could be misinterpreted, however, it made her feel uncomfortable about the possibility of having a tutor who makes her feel like they don't want to help her and make her feel inadequate. In the end she was really scared and did not want to go back ever. --- Aloha, I haven't received any phone calls or text messages. I believe my daughter was saying that the tutor was telling another tutor that they did now want to tutor the next student that was coming in.
