We returned for breakfast the next morning & our experience was extremely pleasant having had a delicious, unhurried breakfast from a varied breakfast menu. As my breakfast date said, "R's kitchen really gets it" - with using & supporting local suppliers for their fresh ingredients of which their dinner menus are based upon; having the philosophy of cooking by season; individually wrapped chocolates on all the tables, plenty of fair trade filter coffee refills, friendly & warm service & modest prices. The waitress mentioned that R's Kitchen is merely a few months old & we hope it does extremely well succeeding with locals as well as tourists alike. In addition to breakfast, they have lunch & dinner menus & offer homemade cakes & drinks during the day. We were sorry we didn't find it sooner to experience their dinner menu & will be back one day despite the 2+ hour drive from London!

Believe the hype at Hive…read more Our party of 3.5 (3 adults, 1 toddler) made our way over here on a blowy Saturday July morning for the breakfast essentials, and despite a healthy queue (it's counter service) Hive Beach Cafe delivered the goods in fine form. It's counter service. Weekend breakfast begins at 10am. At that time a swarm of dwellers will descend upon the counter to make sure their breakfast is accounted for. Join the queue and patiently wait (it moves pretty fast and they are very friendly and efficient). Grab a tray, order your menu items and coffees/teas, pick up drinks, sit down, grab cutlery/water/napkins, wait, food arrives. It's really all rather smooth, honestly. In fact, I'd venture to say I like this way BETTER than table service. No tracking down the check when you are ready to depart, just up and leave. Bravo! The Farmhouse Breakfast was gorgeous (see photo) and the Belgian Waffles with bacon and maple syrup were divine (though our toddler was hesitant to share, I don't blame him!). Brother in law enjoyed the Benedict and basically licked the plate. My flat white was intense and necessary. Everything was, simply put, perfect. On a nice day there are plenty of outside seats and its perfectly placed nearly ON the beach, so the views are stellar. It is the only thing around for miles, so enjoy it. The setting is pristine. If its rainy and windy (which it was), the covering is quite sufficient and seats many "inside." All this for about £50. Our best meal in the area, would definitely return.

However, the change in staff, particularly the manager (I think that's what she is) has impacted the service to the point where I no longer enjoy coming. On our first time coming back we were told we could self seat and were met with a pretty warm welcome, the manager wasn't around. On the second visit you couldn't help but notice her glaring at people from behind the bar, enough to make anyone feel uncomfortable. I had two interactions with her. When I paid for the meal, again miserable and agitated and when I realised I'd missed out on an offer that I wanted to claim. Trying to explain this to her she was not happy, I felt like I had done something wrong by asking about it and although she eventually managed to sort something out, I was left feeling guilty. The last visit (today) was the worst. There were a group of 5 waiting to be seated, yet there were tables for two inside that seemed empty. As someone who comes regularly seating myself has never been a problem. We walked in and took our seat, only to be verbally berated for 'queue jumping' despite there only being a large group, who clearly wouldn't have fit on a table for two. We were told off in front of the busy restaurant, and we apologised. Her attitude then turned to delight as she realised we had sat in someone else's seat who was at the bar. You could tell she enjoyed escorting us off the table whilst reminding us why we shouldn't have sat down ourselves (something that isn't usual in our lounge). Unfortunately, as someone who used to recommend Nautico to everyone (anyone who knows me knows it's my favourite ice for all day breakfast and burgers!) I can no longer recommend it until something changes with the service. I miss the old staff, and feel the manager could learn something from them. Ideally I'd like her to apologise personally for the embarrassment of being publicly scolded, but I doubt that would happen.
