Finding the hotel is a bit of a challenge; google maps will take you via Mr. Toads wild ride, the good news is that there is an easier road to traverse, long but at least your car won't stall out attempting to go up the cobblestone stone, old road / route. Once you arrive the view is amazing. The pool oversees the Douro Valley & River. Drinks are brought out to you be it by the poolside or the outdoor veranda. The rooms, book early or like us you'll land in one of the smaller rooms, still nice, but a window would have made it great. Sheets to towels were top grade, no robes were offered, could have been because we were in one of the smaller rooms. Pillows - not comfortable, bed was cozy though. Bathroom was clean, the toilet is separated out, great for utilization. They offer dinner at an extra cost, which was well made by staffers. Remember to dress for dinner, nothing fancy, but also not your shorts. Breakfast comes with your reservation, continental, nice breads, expresso made upon request. WIFI is slow, but they've got it & it's free.

I was lucky enough to get up graded to a suite which was a large bedroom with a king bed and balcony, a living area with another balcony and a large bathroom. And it overlooked the river so I could watch the tour boats lazily make their way up the river. There are grounds to wander, a pool to swim in and a walkway along the river that makes a nice day just that much better. The service in this hotel is top notch. Ask for something and someone will run and get it immediately. My problem was I kept getting lost as it rambles and has several different levels so I was always asking for help to get to where I needed to be. The restaurant has a wonderful chef who prepares amazing dishes. I had breakfast and dinner here and you couldn't go wrong with anything on the menu. And the best part? A Portugal hotel who knows that Americans like to drink a lot of coffee in the morning so I got my own pot on the table! Yay for me! The town that this is in doesn't have much going for it . . .the best restaurant in town is in the hotel but you can walk to the train station or to the small shops. What a lovely place is Casa do Soutinho!…read more We stayed two nights while in the area to experience 516 Arouca Bridge and Passadiços do Paiva Trailhead. This was the perfect spot with proximity to the bridge, as well as places to eat. Casa has a guesthouse with comfortable, clean and quiet, en suite rooms, as we as some bungalows. There is a kitchen and a really nice breakfast is served each morning. Additionally, they have a beautiful pool with immaculately groomed grounds. It's honestly nicer that many big brand hotels. The staff is wonderful. Friendly and accommodating. And there's an adorable, chatty cat roaming the grounds. He got chased from the house a few times and I think he liked the drama. They have parking and getting out of the lot is possibly the only downside of the stay, as it's a little blind to oncoming traffic. Not a huge deal, if you're careful. Just an excellent place!

Our room had a balcony that overlooked the River and the Church that was quite nice.. Room, The bed could improve as well as pillows and duvet... they could also refresh the rug in the room... even thouhg there was a lot of fabric around, I did not smell anything odd, and I am VERY picky on odors... that could not be said about the corridors of our 4th floor... it did smell odd. Lighting in the room was defecient as most hotels and trying to charge your electronics was a nightmare... once you turned your lights out, it would cut the power of your devices as well, so we had to charge in the bathroom. Bathroom was on the ok side... shower was also on the good side. The bathrobe needs a replacement as it was harsh and over-used... Staff in the lobby could be nicer.... Breakfast in the dining room was very good... great service there! As for the restaurant, I will post a review of its own as it does deserve a star in the Michellin book!!! The gardens outside are quite nice... they needed some care though.. All in all, it was a good hotel and missing some details to maintain the R.C. status in my opinion.... Enjoy

The grounds are beautiful, including the pool, the dining room, and our own casita with stunning views over the valley. The exceptional hosts bend over backwards to ensure you have everything you need. I recommend having dinner there at least once. However, you can also bring in a picnic from town (5 minutes away by taxi or rental car) to eat on your private terrace. The host's also recommended a wonderful boat tour and a tour of a port house that included a bus ride to a dizzying height with the most incredible views. Ursula and her staff are just beautiful people.

Long story short: DO NOT stay without a car and a solid command of Portuguese. Expect some…read morechallenges. First, the good. The grounds themselves are lovely, with lots of trees, seating areas scattered around the lawns, and docks on the river for sunbathing. We spent our sunny days kayaking and swimming in the small river inlet. The daily breakfast was very convenient, though it was mostly processed dairy and bread with instant coffee and not much fruit. Our two villas were cleaned daily by friendly staff. These villas are not designed to be convenient for international travelers. There is one taxi in the whole village, and the driver only speaks Portuguese, so we had to wait for a call back from a villa manager so that she could call the taxi driver to see if he was available. We had a very difficult time finding transportation from the train station to the villas upon arrival, and the walk would have been over an hour. At one point the usual driver was unavailable and we had another driver who drove so erratically up the dirt hill that the pregnant member of our party was fearful for her safety. There is no nearby restaurant or grocery store accessible without a taxi ride, so we arranged for a drive to the store on our second day. There is one restaurant that delivers (after a call to the villa manager once again), but they have a very limited take out menu that doesn't include vegetarian options. We were told many times that tours or activities could be arranged, but because we were more that 4 people, no options seemed to be available to us. All transactions (including food delivery and tours) apparently need to be conducted in cash. I didn't realize that we had even booked our room using a money order instead of a credit card, which I would have refused had I booked it myself. Lastly, our reservation was changed without our consent. We were shown to our rooms by a housekeeper who only spoke Portuguese and realized that we were shown one small villa instead of the larger one we'd reserved. We called the manager, who told us there was an issue with that villa, and promised to modify the price when we checked out. We later saw people checking out of our reserved villa, which they had apparently overbooked despite there being fat too few options for any confusion to have occurred. We had a nice enough time cooking our own meals and lounging by the river, but we didn't get to eat out, take a boat tour, or see a winery like we'd planned. I wouldn't count on the staff to hold our reservations or help us get to the train on time in the future, so I won't be returning.

It is an agriturismo and it has it's own vineyard. There's a gorgeous view of the surrounding hills and vineyards from their hilltop location. Highlights: 1) Close to Douro River and all the Port Wineries. 2) Great breakfast. I loved all the huge selection of homemade jams. The cherry jam was my favorite. 3) It's a great place to go for a long walk. Just make sure you have GPS because we got a little lost one morning. 4) The bed and room was really comfy.

You can catch some spectacular views of the Douro River. Basically, the view alone is worth it. The gardens are spectacular and well-manicured. The staff was warm and welcoming. They stayed opened until I arrived, which was very late. They even made dinner for me at that hour. The rooms were big and comfortable. And it included many amenities. I wouldn't recommend this type of hotel if you're traveling with young children. I think it's great for solo travelers or couples. Resende is a small town and it's quite remote. So this B&B is a great place to just have a relaxing stay.
