After leaving a horrible review, someone from customer care called up and explained why I was made to wait for so long at my previous visit. I appreciate the effort taken to make sure that I knew why I wasn't taken in on time. I am also glad that the lady did not ask me to change their yelp rating. My second appointment was with the hygienist. She is really sweet. She explained everything that was going on with my teeth , which I liked because I want to know what's going on my own teeth. She did a thorough cleaning and my mouth feels amazing ever since. I have super sensitive teeth and so I flinched every time she tried to clean. But she was patient and understanding and applied a numbing gel multiple times and ensured that I was not in too much pain.

I did all the things, all of them Arrived to my supposed-to-be consultation with the dental proprietor of the establishment, to be served a cup of rinse. I rinsed. I spat. I sat awkwardly through 20 pictures of my teeth being taken by digital camera. I held the tongs when asked. My husband raised an eyebrow. I shrugged. I was there to discuss a plan for getting implants, as my teeth did not make it through terminal lung cancer as peppy as I did. When I informed them I was not there for the $149 super special super cleaning, confusion was thick. I said again, I was supposed to see the owner. Andrea said she works with the #1 implant specialist in the country. I was stoked. We then waited 30 minutes for the dentist who showed up delightful, gentle and absolutely clueless to anything. She asked why I was there. I said to fix my teeth. She said what's wrong with them. I said there's only 7. She asked what I was specifically there for. Now less sure, I answered... expertise? On... dental... implants? Did no one... sigh. She excised herself to peer at my X-rays for the first time, and then said she would not be able to help me, but handed me a useless post-it where 'a firmer cancer patient like me can go to get specialized care for my cancer deformity.' Um. Those teeth were pulled in the 90's, back when sedation dentistry wasn't really a thing, and my dentist pulled anything that needed more than 10 minutes work because I had panic disorder. Unacceptable in the late 80's and early 90's. Point is, it was a waste of time, a schmooze to get me there and it was irritating because now my sedation dentist is like: appreciate what you have. And maybe that's it. I'll give him 23k because my deformity, whether from cancer or anxiety, doesn't bother him And he knows I'd absolutely smack him if he said I was deformed. Because what a douche to the ego High traffic. Very busy. It's dark. Addams family decor (black blinds with dark blue floors). Don't recommend. Unless that's your thing. Then go for it.

I first started at Shoppingtown Dental reluctantly because of the "mall" reference (don't let the name put you off... it's not even in Shoppingstown just near it!) but the office was close for travel and took my NYS retiree insurance... up front. I have found this office to be exceptional in terms of insurance billing and pre-approvals (thank you, Pat!) with appointments kept right on time or very close to it... none of these "we're running an hour late.." Most importantly, Dr. Simlote is .... very skilled, very gentle and kind, and very concerned with your well being as he works in your mouth (confirms all is ok as he goes). I knew my insurance would not cover but really had no choice. I set up the appointment and went to see Jim and I am so glad I did. The office is an old house that he obviously bought to run his practice. It's kind of homey and made going to the dentist more like going home if that could ever make things easier. The doctor is about my age and loves to tell stories about ice fishing. I had the initial exam and he was confident he could help me out. There was no negotiation on price, however, I felt that if it had come down to it, he would had helped me financially. No novicane, no gas, no nothing. 2 hours later, I have a post and a temp crown. No problems. Then on to day 2 yesterday. He removes temp and cements a new crown. Easy peasy. Hoping it lasts a lifetime. I love the spittoon and mouthwash. I'm old school when it comes to washing out my mouth. Again I can't say enough about the service here. If I had insurance, I go to Jim for all my dental care. What a fantastic experience.

To go to a sedation dentist that has done 5 root canals on browns he's placed in 4 years - one of which I had replaced yesterday at Manlius dental, because 1/3 of it broke off. I have 2 more that are chipped. But let's go on! I saw a dentist that said I needed 17 root canals. I had a dentist who sent me to another dentist because he couldn't tell if I needed a root canal. ANNNNND... lastly I saw a dentist who said I needed a special dentist to work with people like myself that are... deformed by cancer. Nope- forgot Fallon brothers who told me in September I could not go there because I have Medicaid, and it's a Covid rule. Which is odd. Because I saw them the day before lockdown to pull a tooth. So that's 5 years of trying to find a dentist after surviving and reversing a terminal cancer (lung/trachea/bronchus metastatic to small bowel. Entered hospice at 60 pounds August 2019. Cancer-free since November 2019 (self-paid for the treatment I wanted) and off treatment 6+ years. Two points: treatment - much of which was in my trachea, a coma and a month long mechanical ventilation coupled with severe malnutrition destroyed my teeth. And people were jerks about it. Second point: 20 year anxiety buddy of a dentist died. 10 days after I started treatment after hospice. He was 50, and I was in the same hospital, and I was traumatized. I'd known him since I was 3. So this is why I say it matters that I think Manlius Dental is an excellent facility. They aren't phoning in the work. They aren't doing stuff that needs to be done. They aren't trying to hold a face that pretends it's listening when you talk. There's no ego, no as*holes and a genuine understanding about dental phobia. I've worked with 2 of the dentists, because they don't like to make you wait in pain just so whoever gets paid. You have the choice almost always to come in same or next day. And so I drive from Cicero, and it's worth it. I'm not made to feel like a child, a whiner, or an imposition. I appreciate that. But on top of that, procedures and sedations are each 100's of dollars less than at my former dentist(s). So why are they better, but cheaper? I think, and you can quote me in this - it because they give a damn about their patients. This, is home. And taking the stress out of dental distress has been awesome.

However I had an accident in 2021 and it was like a complete turn in their behavior. Three of my teeth were knocked out and to say it was traumatic puts it lightly, I wasn't in the right mindset. They made fun of me for bringing a stuffed animal to my appointments, saying that I was too old for those things. They also said with the dental bridge I ended up having I could only drink soup as food for the rest of my life, which years later is a giant lie I'm able to eat fine. And they also said to me with my bridge if it ever needs to be worked on it would rip out my teeth underneath, so I would end up having to just deal with implants. Which..Is also a lie, there's ways to safely remove them. I have since stopped going there and I can say the way they have treated me has affected the way I trust dentists and the PTSD I now have from my accident. Edit: Also forgot that my mother paid for all of the work done on my teeth, they overcharged her $800 and getting the money back to her took around two months.
