Last year my father moved to La Quinta and I set out on the task via the internet to find him a reputable CPA. Being so far away, I wanted to make sure he wasn't taken advantage of. Yelp was my first go-to as I believe in first hand experiences. Once my father set out to make an appointment it became clear that Dave works from home. He will work electronically for those (like me) that refuse to spend hours at a preparers office or he will meet with you in person for Hurd if you so desire... Extremely flexible! I've been going to Dave to file my taxes for the past 9-10 years since I started working. He's always been consistently prompt about filing my taxes. He always send out the packets for taxes pretty early in the tax season... End of jan to feb? After previously committing to filing taxes for my husband and me he has stated that he does not have time and would not make enough money for it to be worth it, one month before taxes are due. I am now in the incredibly difficulty position of trying to find a new CPA a month before taxes are due. He had all of our information and paperwork in a timely manner and gave no warning during the previous 2 months of our communication that he would then not file for us. I found David on Yelp in a shear panic about my taxes. My husband and I have been 1099 employees for a non profit, I am small business owner and we have back taxes from previous years. My wife and I used Dave for our taxes two years in a row and will no longer be doing so after this year's error. I had a contractor position where my employer sent out a 1099-Misc in lieu of paying taxes with the more common W-4. Basically, I pay the taxes at the end of the year. Last year the employer was very late in sending out the 1099-Misc and we were prepared with everything else, so we submitted our taxes to Dave and informed him of the extra earned income amount. We assumed they were included in the return as we ended up owing a small amount to the State. Two weeks ago we receive a letter in the mail from the IRS informing us that we in fact did not report the income and are now being assessed a fee! Surely, this must be an error. After combing through our 2009 tax return, they're right. Dave did NOT include the extra income when preparing our taxes. Wait, there's more... Last year I did the same contractor work in January and February. One year later, I neglected to tell Dave about the extra income and he filed our taxes, charging $200 for our joint return. Fair enough. One week before the above letter arrives, my 1099-Misc for the 2010 tax year shows up in the mail. I contacted Dave about the forgotten form and he tells us we will need to pay an additional $187 just to have our taxes amended. After doing some research on the IRS web site, I learned we only need to file a 1040X form. It took me, an amateur, about one whole hour to do this while following the specific instruction from the IRS. I contacted Dave and informed him we would not require his services any longer. He then emails me back saying that it is true only a 1040X needs to be filed, however its a 3 step process and that he would now only charge us $150 for the amendment. Needless to say, we will not be recommending RDM to anyone in the future. read more
