As far as possible the firm sources its meat from local suppliers and can tell you where it comes from. The Christleton Road branch carries a reasonably wide range of cuts, and can bring in other cuts given a day or two's notice. Not the place to go if you want gimmicky marinades or fancy preparations. Buy the basic ingredients and make the dish up yourself! One small gripe - they like their gammon salty so we always soak it overnight before cooking.

I grew up eating the famous Hawkins Sausages and even though I moved from Ellesmere many years ago I still get a regular supply of Ellesmere Sausages to take home with me. The pork pies are also to die for. The Sausage recipie is a secretly guarded one, its been around for 100 years and they are still made in the traditional way today, they have just the right amount of Herbs and spices and are not pumped with preservatives or additives unlike the ones in the supermarkets. The sausages are actullay made by Stokes of Ellesmere but sold in Hawkins (were they originated). Well worth a trip to stock up, I can promise you you wont be dissapointed.

This is the butchers my mum-in-law has always used. I have been living in the US for seven years…read morenow, and recently went to my in-laws' for Christmas. I was sent to Hoptons for meat. The quality and selection was so high I couldn't believe my eyes. You see, in America, there are no butchers. They've been barred by the government. Only huge conglomerates are allowed to sell meat. I was used to grey beef, people going around saying how great a "hot dog" was, and paying upwards of $25 for a small piece of grass-fed sirloin (Yankees feed cattle corn and a cocktail of hormones/chemicals so they get very fat quickly). These folks are proper tradesmen, who clearly care deeply about the quality of their meat and service. I've never tasted better bacon, steak, or sausages. I kept going back. And, unlike in America, I didn't need to take out a loan to buy some quality food- this seemed to be the norm! I noticed that, when queuing (in the rain) for quite a while to pick up our Christmas orders, everyone was smiling and very happy. No one complained, all were only excited to be getting the best meat in Cheshire. Such a treat. Its amazing to think that people here in the States constantly crack jokes about how terrible the food is in the UK, when a little butcher in Hoole produces food that would make any NYC Michelin-starred chef weep with jealousy. I am heading back the Chester soon, and you can bet my tea will include plenty of cuts from Hopton's.

Even if the counter is busy, just place your order and hang around with the buzzer they give you. When it sounds go back and your food will be hot and ready to take away. I don't know how it compares on price because I didn't pay the first time and I was so impressed, the next time I went I knew what I was getting and didn't even look. Whatever the price was it wasn't extortion and well worth the money. You don't get this quality of food very often, so well done and thanks to all the staff.

Sainsbury's Local on Watergate St is in a useful location within Chester Town centre, it is a…read moredecent size branch, obviously, you can't do a weekly shop here but the selection is A-OK in terms of essentials. The store has two entrances, the front entrance has a staircase (with a lift) and escalator, or if you let the staff know there's a back entrance. The staff seemed really friendly and happy to help, which was good. Considering, this is only a "Local" store, they did have a good selection of fresh meats, I picked up some excellent quality turkey, and they also have a bakery section. The checkouts were easy to use and simple. They are missing a trick by not having a coffee machine here though, especially as Tesco Express' town centre store (and Superstore) does, so it would be useful, but I dislike Costa Coffee anyway which most coffee machines seem to use. 4* - The extra star is mainly for the friendliness and the helpfulness of the staff, while the selection is OK.
