This was a blessing in disguise as it meant we had the host all to ourselves to which he translated EVERY dish on the menu and talked us trough the various wines they had available. We tried quite a few of the dishes including my favourite - the pop roquer, a large piece of succulent octopus served on a bed of mashed potatoes. I also enjoyed the Durham cat which was a thin wrap of spinach, pine nuts and cheese. Most every off-the-chart suggestion we tried was exceptional, with my favorite actually being Tomaquets de Temporada amp Burratina í old D'Alfabrega. This was probably the best Burrata and Tomatoes serving I've ever tasted. It must be their spiced basil oil. The thought of eating dinner at the hotel was stomach-turning and with a quick search on google maps we found Ona Nuit. This adorable restaurant is located in what I would call an industrial neighborhood however it could easily be transported to Los Angeles and fit right in. They specialize in "Km.0" or slow food with an emphasis on local ingredients. We chose the seasonal tasting menu, everything we had was fresh and delicious! It was priced reasonably at around 30 Euro/pp. Only thing I would mention is that unless you are staying by the airport this restaurant is a trek from central Barcelona; also if you are strictly English speaking you may have some slight difficulty ordering (there is an English menu) but the staff was very gracious even with our broken Spanish! The eating area has a lovely comfortable feel, like somebody's large living room who has invited you for dinner. The house specializes in Argentinian beef and Spanish rice and seafood, and it delivers in spades. For starters, we had a huge bowl of simply steamed mussels and an Argentinian beef empanada, all delicious. Main courses were "arroz con mariscos" for two (rice with seafood) and a very delicate Argentinean chuletón, a tender steak that came with perfect potato fries and red peppers. There was a bit left of the rice because the portion was big, which was taken back to the hotel and made for a perfect small dinner! Desserts were the panqueque con dulce de leche and a cheese cake with a fruit sauce, both superb. The cheese cake is not the NYC type, rather the European variety made with ricotta, but just as tasty. In short, meals at Cal Coco are made with simple ingredients, cooked expertly but without fuss and served piping hot from the kitchen. Service by the family owners is prompt and full of warmth. Both Torredembarra and Cal Coco are a surprising treat if you are in the Barcelona area.
