Black’s Cliff Resort - Cute little trees made out of tree

It was such a fun, unique and refreshing trip to take in the winter. It truly seemed like we were in a real life snowglobe. The resort itself seemed to be about 13 cabins. We were in one that comfortably slept 6 grown adults. We also were able to bring our little pug up with us (For a small additionally fee). The family that runs the resort is as sweet as can be. Very hospitable & has a great resort dog that we saw running around during our time there. The snow had fallen fresh, making it a bit difficult to get out of the drive way but it was plowed in record time. I would of loved to enjoy the back deck of the cabin more (that had an awesome hanging bed!) or been able to have my dog use the dog park - but sadly he was sinking in the snow. The cabin came pretty fully stocked in the kitchen - which was helpful for the meals we were planning. The bathroom/shower was great and had plenty of hot water. Fire wood was abundant for the fireplace within the cabin. And the lake was great to see all snow covered. I hope I get the chance to enjoy this part of the Northwoods in the summer!

Black's Cliff Resort is by far the gem amongst the many other good options. I have to give the credit to my girlfriend who found the place, and also the time of year, first week of June, it was so quiet and peaceful. We stayed in the Birchwood cabin, right next door to the resort keepers place, home to the resort dog a regal golden retriever who seems to be doing very well in his professional role. The cabin was amazing, with a fireplace inside, stocked with local firewood, and a backyard fire pit. A breezeway overlooking the lake with a bed hanging from the ceiling was the perfect spot for a Sunday afternoon snooze after the drive up from Chicago. Later in the evening, after dinner, I noticed the light fading and wandered down the stairs to one of the most thrilling sunsets I have witnessed. And I was the solo witness because not a soul was stirring on that lake in early June, and evening chill negated my girlfriends interest in the natural beauty. That night, on the soft bed, I had the best night's sleep in at least a year.

The bar is a simple 10 stool, 3 table dimly lit area with a plethora of northwoods nostolgia adorning every square inch of wall space. The pool table has become a package liquor depot and cases of beer form a dividing wall between the bar and tables. The place has a couple tv's which usually are tuned to ESPN for a Badger or Packer game. Consider yourself blessed if you can find a spot at the bar. There is only one bathroom for ladies and ladies (think Scottish). Most important: watch your tongue! Those with foul mouths may be asked to leave, no joke. You can get beers in 12oz or 40oz, mostly domestics and a few from New Glarus' brewery and obviously your mixers and cocktails too. Then there is John Bernard, the kind and always reliable proprietor. He works every single day of the year alongside his golden retriever, Bruno, and is always good for some friendly banter along side your beer and fresh popcorn. I would think there will be statues made of this man some day. Did I mention he's the fire warden too? Well he is. John and his establishment are Northwoods to a T. You owe it to yourself to try this place.

I thought it was pretty nice that, on the day before the stay, they sent me several text messages about how to get to our room: directions from the main desk, the combinations to the digital locks and how to use them, and they even sent me a picture of the room's door. The outside of the hotel looked clean and might have had a recent remodel. There was no professional landscaping, but I didn't expect to see any, either. It became clear immediately that those text messages were worth saving. There is a digital combination lock for the main door and the same combination for the door leading up to our room. There was no one at the main desk, which I thought was odd. Our room's door was missing the trim around it (I was told via text that the digital lock is new, so I assume that the whole door is new, too?). Our room was located on the second floor - the only room on the second floor. The only way to get there was to navigate the narrow hallway then climb some stairs that were slightly steeper than standard. Because we are retirees and my wife's knees have been surgically replaced, the steepness made it difficult to get to our room. When I got to the top of the stairs I could see that there is a non-zero probability of accidentally falling down the stairs as there is no door or gate at the top. Nevertheless, the room looked spacious and cozy. The bedroom was comfortable and well set up. It was roomy, had comfy chairs, a day beef in addition to the king bed, a coffee bar, and a TV which we didn't use. It looks like they spent most of their remodeling money on the bathroom. It's very nice and big (see pics). The bedroom's and hallway's carpeted areas don't feel like they're well-padded. Our picture window looks out over a lake with loads of lilypads and a deck. We got lucky and saw three deer (a doe and two fawns). If you don't like interacting with humans, you don't have to. We did online booking, got our keys (digital combinations) via text message, and left without seeing anyone. I wonder how long it would have taken to get assistance if we needed it. In sum, we would not stay at this motel in the future. For younger persons with good knees, this would be a good choice.

The lady with the shoulder length hair ( not the one with the short hair who worked overnight, she was really nice) stated someone should be in around 9am. By noon, I noticed nothing was cleared so I went back up to the desk. She stated they had no one to remove the snow from the sidewalks. There was at least a foot of snow and to drag luggage through it would have been a nightmare. So I asked if they had a shovel that I could borrow as my car was backed up to the patio to my room. She stated she did not have a shovel I could borrow, however, I could purchase a shovel and pointed to some shovels for sale near the door. Why would a water park sell shovels to people that rent their hotel suites? Anyway, I smiled and went back to my room. I ended up using the microwave plate to remove as much snow as I could. In order to get to my trunk and get the heck out of there. It took me a couple of weeks to write this review, as i've been staying at other hotels in the area, and i've explained the situation and the other area hotels have looked at me like I was crazy. Never again will I stay here. I come here weekly for work and our business pays for our travel expenses. Would love to know from the management why should we purchase shovels from you in order to clean the sidewalks to access our vehicles?
