While I was trying them on, the manager stood less than a foot away from me, staring, and speaking into her walkie-talkie about me trying on shoes. I put the shoes back and decided to look elsewhere. Later, I wanted to try on a pink corset. My boyfriend told me she was standing right outside the fitting room, watching me the entire time, and when I opened the curtain, she suddenly walked away. I understand stores wanting to prevent theft, but this behavior was excessive and felt almost obsessive. My boyfriend is Hispanic and White, and I'm Black. Akira is marketed heavily toward Black women as well, which makes this treatment even more unsettling. The manager followed me everywhere, staying just a foot or two behind me, and it made me feel very uncomfortable. Because of the tension, I left the store. I won't be coming back.
