Bright and inviting from the outside, Peppercorns seemed like a good choice, a decent sized cafe with a variety of different types of seating from comfortable looking sofas in the window, to more conventional table and chairs further back. Lots of variety on the menu, but we had just missed the last orders for the breakfast type food, which ends at 11.30am. Nevertheless a great variety of other dishes on offer for lunch, from sandwiches, rolls and paninis to salads and jacket potatoes. We opted for the Club Sandwich, which came on toasted granary bread, absolutely delicious, the chicken and bacon were packed with flavour, and the lettuce and tomato, so fresh; the fresh coleslaw on the side, was a good accompaniment too. Each sandwich is made to order and it showed, best Club Sandwich I've had in a long time. The accompanying cappuccino and americano, were also good, strong and flavoursome without being too bitter. You order and pay at the front of the cafe, and I was almost tempted into the moreish looking cakes next to the counter like home made Rocky Road and Chocolate Brownies. Peppercorns also has a small deli area too, selling items like speciality teas and coffees, crackers, pasta, sauces etc. A great first impression, Peppercorns really could be worth five stars, but that requires more visits!

The Cookie is more than just a cafe however, you can get a beer, glass of wine or spirit to drink there also, and in the evenings the place is often transformed into a venue, hosting top comedy acts, live music, and even a local knitting group! The breakfast was 3.95, which is a great price, but it was high quality. Here's what I mean: the egg waa a deep, rich color and was cooked perfectly. It sat over crispy, toasted hashbrowns and came with mushrooms and buttered bread. For a little extra I'd get a coffee (served piping hot, with hot milk) that washed it all down perfectly. On my last day I went by hoping for one more but they weren't open. So, question for the owners: how late do you serve breakfast?? My husband and I are coming back in November but won't be in town until about 1430 (early afternoon). Do you still have breakfast then?

There are plenty of tables and seats and it's bright, light and very clean. The selection of beverages is excellent; there is a lot to choose from both hot and cold. The hot drinks are served in huge bowl sized mugs! There is also quite a good choice of food both hot and cold, these are all pre-packed however (although I think all Costa's are the same! They also have a rather good cake and biscuit selection which accompany their drinks very well!! On a downside I think the service is quite poor! The stroppy girl behind the counter really needs to start smiling and speaking, she grunted to me the amount and failed to tell me that I needed to wait at the counter for my drinks (which took her ages to make!) so I sat waiting for ages until she came over to me and asked me to go collect them, in dire need of some customer service training, I think!

So instead we ordered platters for our group of 12 from The Granary Canvas about 10 minutes away. The landlady was quite happy for us to do this and there were a few other tables of people eating take out food too. The staff at the Granary Canvas were incredibly friendly and we had no problems with pre-ordering food over the phone and paying over the phone. The prices were good and the portion sizes were very big and having it all delivered to the pub for us was great too.

The place is quite hidden away, and you might miss it if you're only walking up the Coleshill High Street. But if you park in Church Hill car park, you have to walk past L'Maiz to get to the main road. And it's definitely worth stopping by. Inside, you'll be immediately greeted by the Italian owner, who'll seat you in one of three tables. Yes, the cafe only has limited space, but I think this provides a great intimacy to the whole experience. Browsing at the menu, I was absolutely astonished by the wide range of food available. From hot roasts to toasties to breakfast to pasta, everything was freshly made by the owner himself. The pizzas (all of them!) particularly looked tempting, and I loved that you could get three size choices, and even just purchase once slice for £1 if you wanted! I did exactly this because I had eaten not long before. But if had I known how delicious the margarita was going to be beforehand, I'd have definitely bought a 9" (or maybe even a 14" for £9.50 if I was feeling particularly greedy). Next time I go in, I'm definitely trying the Hot Mexican Madness. It looks, sounds and smells amazing. Surprisingly for June, it was exceptionally cold outside; so I opted for a hot chocolate to accompany the pizza. The hot drink tasted exceptional, and beats any run-of-the-mill coffee shop version that I've tried in the past. No matter what time of the day, L'Maiz can cater for you.
