The pecan pie was amazing. The best I've ever had. You could taste the vanilla and butter - nothing artificial here. Local pecans too!

I got 2 pieces of the pecan pie to go, there was no way I could have eaten them that night.

On a westward family journey we pulled off the road in Lordsberg, New Mexico. On first glance there…read morewas not much to this little burg that time and progress forgot. On closer examination, not unlike panning for gold a nugget appears out of the slag. The Shack! In the New Mexican desert operating out of the carcass of an old filling station. A nondescript food truck that serves up the best steak sandwiches outside Philly. Affordable and huge portions. A family run business with undeniably amazing service. The steak sandwiches with perfect seasoning and pepper balance. Cheese (american or provolone)and mayo mixed in not layered. Also a must is the green Chile cheese fries. Fried golden and blanketed in cheese dappled in hatch chilies. Despite it's outward appearance and questionable locale a must! So if ever crossing the south west in a Hunter S Thompson fever dream STOP HERE!

It has a food truck parked outside but it's not operational. The food comes out of the smoke shack. It's weird but cute all at the same time. There are 2 tables outside where cats would've been worked on, between the smoke shop and food truck. The menu is small, which is nice and appropriate since its main business seems to be smokes. The food is fresh, cooked to order.

I stopped by with my coworker while on a work trip today and found this barbecue place on yelp…read more From the outside it looked really cool, and even smelled great. We were pretty excited as we walked in. The atmosphere inside was cool, I really thought it was a cool touch with the old train car that you sit in. The service was fine, it was a little odd with the robotic delivery thing that brought the food to the table along with the waitress. Where I really can't give a good rating is the food. I ordered the brisket plate, a coworker ordered the chicken. The first red flag was that it took only about 2 minutes from the time we put our order in until the food showed up at the table. I don't think I've ever seen food come out of any restaurant so fast, unless it was a fast food place. I was so focused on the wrinkled, withered half chicken on my coworkers plate that I didn't really even pay attention to my brisket. The chicken looked like it had been overcooked for way too long, and then had probably sat underneath the heat lamp for quite a bit longer. Watching him try to cut through the skin with a steak knife would have been really funny, except we were both pretty hungry. When I got to my brisket, there were several good size slices of meat. There was a smoke ring evident on the top of the meat, but none on the bottom. My guess is that it had probably been smoked on a flat pan or something else that kept smoke off. The overall smoke flavor was fairly weak, nowhere near what I expected for a brisket. The worst part however, was that I needed a steak knife also to cut into my brisket. It was tough and dry. My best guess, based on the texture and a weird aftertaste, is that it had been smoked, sliced and frozen, and was then reheated in a microwave (if you've ever nuked a steak, you know how it makes the meat taste). The coleslaw and beans served as sides were alright, though the beans were over salted. Overall, this was a disappointment for food. Neither my coworker or myself were able to eat more than half of the meal, and I would not recommend it to anyone expecting good BBQ.

Two words- REAL avocado. If you've been to other restaurants in the rural desert SW in the past…read morefive years or so, you know why I started with that seemingly simple statement. My husband and I tried this taco cart (a distinctive black food truck located on the D Ave side of Castro Park between 9th and 10th Streets) for the first time today. It was easily the best food we've had in Douglas, and we were blown away! So fresh and generous with both the meat and the toppings. The owner's salsa is also top notch, spicy but very edible even in quantity. The pricing was very good, particularly including all the fresh tomato and avocado slices. We tried two types of tacos, the tostada, and this fantastic loaded type of quesadilla. It was like a quesadilla on steroids (it was more like the type I make at home, packed full of meat and vegetables). My hisband also had yummy curly fries. The cook gave excellent service and he helped us pick a couple dishes when he saw we were new. The ingredients are in Spanish, so this was very helpful. The lettuce and other veggies were very fresh and had no taste of cleaners or disinfectant (like soap, etc) that we have run into at other Douglas restaurants. That comment may sound strange, but we've encountered it more than once at other establishments. We are looking forward to trying everything on the menu! This taco cart would be a hit in any city. If you are used to the desert SW customer ratings, you may have noticed a lot of people rate VERY generously. I think it's the lack of options, sort of rating-by-comparison, "grading on a curve" effect. This taco cart is a real 5 star, an LA or Seattle 5-star.
