The Railway Inn, just out of Swadlincote town centre has a restaurant attached called Chang Thai. We had heard good reports from friends, so we decided to check it out, we were not disappointed. Even at 7.00pm on a weeknight the restaurant was half full, so I would advise you to book, particularly at the weekends. The restaurant has an authentic feel, with large rafia backed chairs and solid wooden tables. We were instantly made to feel welcome by the friendly and helpful staff, the restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere.
The menu is comprehensive to say the least, with a chilli rating used for the spiciness of the dish. Pay heed to this scale as the food can be a tad piquant, to say the least! Not being as au fait with Thai food as some other cuisines, we plumped for one the many set menus. The starter in the vegetarian menu we chose was tasty and varied, but a little greasy. The main courses had good variety, but were a little spicier than I had anticipated, but very flavoursome nonetheless. A good cup of coffee to finish and an entertaining aside watching other customers having their dishes flambeaud (flames enveloping the ceiling!), rounded off a great evening. Definitely be returning, but will probably pick from the menu next time, something slightly milder! read more
