I like Stockport Station, it's a great, large station for a small town, it's on a good number of…read moreroutes and has easy access into the town centre as well as buses to continue onto your journey, once arriving into the station. Avanti West Coast manages the station; it's served by a good number of operators including: Transport For Wales, CrossCountry, Transpennine Express, Northern and East Midlands Railway. Most services go into Manchester Piccadilly which is only 7-14 minutes away, depending on which service you take but then you can go to a lot of destinations including London, Norwich, Sheffield and Liverpool. If you're heading into Manchester, you'll want the Northbound platforms (3 and 4) There is a Starbucks inside the station which is temporarily closed at the time of writing (January 2021), as well as a WHSmith, both on Platform 2 (London / Southbound platform) The staff inside the station are friendly and there's a good amount of ticket machines. The station is slightly open so it can get pretty cold if you're waiting for a train, compared to Manchester Piccadilly. There is lift-access to all platforms from the subway level. 4*

Given that it is a bit surprising there aren't any substantial shops - it's mostly small outlets for food and drink to take away. These options are mostly terrible...Starbucks etc. However I'm not sure when this started but in recent months I have noticed food stalls in the underpass beneath the platforms. I've had several good quiches from Cheese is Grate who also sell local cheese, cakes and soup I think on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Most excitingly, my Kirkham (Preston) based favourite Pudding & Pie is now here every other Thursday and Friday. Their pies are consistently excellent and the sweet potato and chilli tart I tried today is my new favourite! Way to go Stockport supporting local businesses making good quality non mass produced food and provided better options for hungry travellers!

The station and all trains calling at it, are operated by Northern Rail. This station is so much better now it has been refurbished. It is St. Helens main station so it's quite facilitated and it's fairly attractive. It is staffed the majority of the time so there is usually someone on hand to answer questions or get directions. The staff are also very helpful so if you need assistance, make sure you enquire. There is a long stay and short stay car park. The long stay does fill up early but it is free. It is convenient to hop on a train to Liverpool or Wigan and during the day they are quite regular. Overall, a decent train station with a modern and secure feel to it.

With it being connected to the Metrolink, this not only means you can continue your journey but it also adds back-up for if either lift isn't working, meaning if you struggle with steps, there's always a back-up way out, just cross the Metrolink bridge, go down the lift, and follow the station around to the exit. Certainly not a bad little station, it might have fewer facilities compared to Manchester's other stations, but there's just something about Deansgate Station which I like. 4*

Whilst these stations are just boring old train stations, Deansgate Station is a piece of architecture worthy of a viewing along with the Castlefield/Deansgate canal routes and the old ruins nearby. A real piece of Manchester's historical character. As the other review is not about the station at all but about Deansgate the road and area, here's a bit about the station. It was opened as Knott Mill on 20 July 1849 and you can still see the old Knott Mill sign just above the new Deansgate one. The sign isn't as old as all that, because it was a wooden station back then. It was rebuilt to what it is today in the 1890s. It was later called Knott Mill & Deansgate, but now it is sadly plain old Deansgate. In 2006 its annual passenger total was only about thirteen thousand, but now it is well clear of a hundred and twenty thousand. This could be because its so good that its popular, or because the world is suffering from overpopulation, which will eventually kill us all

The station may be small and simple but it is well designed for passengers entering and exiting with nice overhead footbridges and walkways to ensure an orderly manner. I am quite familiar with this station since I regularly get off here if I need to go to shops nearby (with Aintree Retail Park just a few minutes walk away). Plus, when I worked at the National for a few days, the train travel remained well organised by Merseyrail staff instead of the mayhem I was expecting. Staff dealt with those days in the correct fashion and managed to avoid any commotions.

The station is down a small road off tunnel street and the decor is stonewall and it looks quaint and small more like the type of train station you would expect to find in a village in the country rather than a metropolitan city such as Liverpool. The staff are always polite and helpful and there is no shortage of information regarding your travel that they will give to you. So to summarise theres nothing standout about this place but I have always found that the people make it great and it is a reliable and convenient place to travel from.

Cressington station is an attractive and Grade-II listed railway station, situated on the…read moreSouthport-Hunt's Cross 'Northern Line' of Merseyrail. It serves the suburb of Grassendale, an area of grand Victorian houses and a Conservation Area in its own right, and has 120,000 passengers a year. Opened in 1864 as Cressington & Grassendale by the Garston and Liverpool Railway, it was built in an attractive red-brick chalet style, with the main building at road level, and platforms in the cutting below. The building extends down to the Hunt's Cross platform, and also has an upper floor, originally staff accommodation. Services initially terminated at Brunswick station, but from 1874 they went into the Liverpool Central terminus until its closure in 1972 (by which time the service was down to a handful of trains a day). It reopened in 1978 as part of the electrified service using the new north-south tunnel through central Liverpool. This tunnel linked the networks north and south of the City Centre for the first time, via a rebuilt underground station at Liverpool Central and a new station at Moorfields. Trains now operate at 15 minute intervals throughout week-days and Saturdays on the Northern Line from Southport to Hunt's Cross, and every 30 minutes on Sundays.

Okay, I love this train station. Absolutely love it. It's picture perfect. (Which explains why I…read moretook so many photos.) And adorable. It was built in the 1800's and it shows. In a good way. It's all leafy and pretty and even the whole area around the station is delightfully green and "oldy worldy." You will see a lot of really pretty old houses in this area. And there's even a railway cat!
