It is being poorly ran, the director and assistant director act clueless and the people they are hiring are unqualified to be around kids. I was unclear if some of the teachers even like kids with how poorly they treat them. My grandson was not properly integrated into the daycare on his first couple weeks, they ignored him while he was scared and new and balling his eyes out. There is no kind of nurturing that is provided from the teachers. Some of the teachers are cold and mean to the kids. The kids are unsupervised at times and climb the walls and stand on bookshelves, things that could lead to injuries. They also hit each other while the teachers pay no mind. The food offerings are gross and no effort is put into the food-at all. He would have poopy diapers when we would pick him up. They will leave your kid staring at the wall for over 2 hrs at nap time and give them no attention at all. They have live video and it made my stomach turn to watch how poorly he was being cared for, hence why I removed him as quickly as possible. I voiced my concerns and made it clear I was angry and unhappy with their care and Sydney (the director) never attempted to address any of it or even acknowledge it. Do not leave your child here. All you have to do is watch the live video feed and in one day, you'll be appalled at how this place is operating. I honestly don't know how they have any clients at this point. We found an amazing daycare since then and now we can have peace of mind our little guy is getting his needs met while in daycare. So, here are just a few things I loved about our experience at Century School: The Staff: The Century staff are the finest humans to ever human. They are highly experienced, care deeply about their kids, and go above and beyond and meet the kids where they are in their learning and help guide them, so they feel successful and confident when picking up new skills. The Hours: If you are a working parent, you get it. School pick up is hard. They have your back w/7:30am drop off and 5:30 pick up. They teach critical thinking and self-reliance: The kids have chores; they have responsibility, they have a plan each day and the result is that they own equity in their learning experiences. Another plus is that the older kids also learn to tutor and guide the younger kids because the classes are mixed ages. You are a part of a Family/community: When you are a parent or student of Century you are a part of a family. Truly, I know it sounds cheesy but it's true. Some of my most lifelong solid parent friends are a result of our kids attending century together. There is a bond and a community that is fostering there which isn't comparable to any other schools. I would choose Century over and over again, to help shape my kiddo's foundational learning. Frankly, I find the claims of "academic malpractice" not only insulting to those of us that LOVE this school but bordering on libelous. The reviewer speaks to a number of issues I can readily contradict. I feel strange about posting a school review on Yelp of all places, but feel compelled to do so. First, there is mention of testing and progress. Each child at Century takes a standardized assessment every 6 months and parents are provided with written results showing academic progress in relation to previous years. Additionally, parents can opt into the Lawrence Virtual School K12 curriculum that includes additional state tests to measure your child's performance. On top of that, every child's academic progress is MEASURED DAILY. All you have to do is ask and any teacher will walk you through exactly what they've learned THAT DAY. Our children regularly bring home completed workbooks. We receive emails and texts, not just about performance but what each teacher appreciates about our children (and what they don't) as well as who their friends are, pictures, etc. On many occasions, we have had lengthy "parent-teacher conferences" when dropping off/picking up our children. The teachers have always been gracious with their time. Second, the reviewer mentions transitioning to public school. We have friends whose children attend other private schools and ALL of our children have had to figure out how to transition to public school. There are a number of differences between Century and public school that our son encountered in his transition - moving to larger class sizes, less peer tutoring, and group instruction. There are more kids, more distractions, changing classes, and more peer pressure. Fortunately, Century prepares parents and kids for this transition. The principal partnered with and introduced the kids to their public-school counselors, taking them on a group tour of their new school, sharing tips for success, and addressing any challenges he anticipated prior to the transition. For example, they knew our son would need to show more of his math work in middle school. Our son struggled for 3-4 weeks with the transition. And, so did we with everything that was new. But now he's settled in and at our most recent teacher conference we were told how he stands out as a leader and is making A's in most of his classes. Century prepared him extremely well and deserves credit for it. Third, on the subject of follow ups to find out if Century's "methods are successful." My first thought is - This isn't a research experiment. It's a school. My elementary school teachers never followed up with my progress. Did yours? However, Century school teachers HAVE FOLLOWED UP. The principal asked all 5th grade graduates to come back 2 weeks into their 6th grade year so he could give them a graduation gift and to find out how things were going. The teachers let kids know they always have a place at Century. Many former Century students volunteer during afternoons, days off, or summer vacations to mentor and work with current students. And some Century students come back as teachers while in college. Fourth, the reviewer states that Century just wants to cash you checks without interest in your children. The reviewer makes it seem like they are all about money. This is offensive. Century is NOT-FOR-PROFIT. The teachers and principal love what they do, work long hours, and run on a lean budget. Frankly, it's sad what we pay teachers at ANY school, public or private, who spend 8+ hours a day with our kids teaching them things we don't have time to teach them. Century is very inexpensive considering it's year round, runs from 7:30-5:30 daily, and provides breakfast, lunch, snacks, downtown treat trips, and field trips. More than that, I've never experienced a more caring environment for our children. I know how much the teachers care because of the texts they send when my child isn't feeling well, the fun pictures they send when they are on a field trip we can't attend, and the fact that our children ask us to invite their teachers to every single birthday party or social event we host. Our children LOVE their teachers and principal as much as they love their friends. And the teachers love them too. Century has taught our kids to be good human beings - emphasizing kindness, responsibility, compassion, hard work, courtesy, and honesty. They have learned to be intellectually curious and love learning for the sake of learning. The previous reviewer's experience is so different from my own and from everyone I know at Century that I felt it was important to counter it with our experience over the past 7 years. With certainty, I can say - Century is the best decision we've made for our kids.

But in light of recent events and the unprofessional behavior of the director, I will be speaking publicly about my experience with Bright Circle Preschool in Topeka. I loved this school. Past tense being key here. When I toured the school and researched reviews and recommendations, I was impressed. They explained their curriculum and the Montessori practices, and my daughter felt comfortable leaving my side and going to play. I enrolled her and things were going great. My daughter made friends and was learning and excelling academically. Then December rolled around. At pick up, I was told that my daughter was extremely upset and "was acting uncontrollable" for most of the day. To the point that they considered calling me to come get her. They didn't, and this is completely out of character for her. I got her home and got her ready for a bath so she is clean and ready for her school Christmas concert that evening. She gets undressed and in the tub. Then I see the small, but very there amount of dried blood present in her underwear. I ask her what happened and she tells me she doesn't want to talk about it. I immediately take her to Children's Mercy in KC. The whole drive, I'm asking her all the questions, "did someone touch you? Who hurt you? What happened?" And frantically trying to get in touch with the school to find out why and how my daughter got these injuries in their care. When I finally got in touch with the director, Betsey Litscher, I was met with only, "I don't knows." We spend 11 hours in the hospital where my poor daughter endured a full physical sexual assault examination, swabbing, sedation, sleep deprivation, no food for hours, missed her first Christmas concert and was questioned repeatedly about this thing that never should have happened. Something did in fact happen and a teacher there at the time witnessed this. I still don't, and probably never will, know the whole story or if this is even what happened. This teacher saw a child with her hands down my daughter's pants and went on to inform no one. And then no one informed me. They helped my daughter go to the bathroom and never told me about the blood on her underwear. Then I had to call the director REPEATEDLY to try to get to the bottom of why I was not notified of any incident and to set up a meeting between myself, the teacher who witnessed this, and the director. It took over a week. At first, Betsey was defensive, argumentative, and dismissive. I lost it a little, as I think most moms would at this point. I also demanded cameras be put up and Betsey assured me numerous times that cameras would be put up, and that this was a fluke accident that will never be tolerated or let happen again. None of my questions were answered by either of them, but shortly after this meeting the teacher was no longer working at the school. Somehow I was swindled into believing Betsey's concern and tears shed for my baby's experience were sincere. I was promised that communication would be improved and that I could trust them moving forward. WRONG MOVE. I should have pulled her out right then and never looked back. Since then, I have had numerous issues with the lack of communication, and strange bruises and injuries on my child while not getting an incident report. Now the most recent unfortunate event. I should mention, I don't know this person through personal interaction and I don't have any ill will toward them. I was told two weeks ago that someone had been hired there to teach. Someone that I know, and someone who is known to me and would cause a conflict of interest. Betsey confirms that my daughter will be in this person's care regularly. I tell her I'm not comfortable with that considering the very real chance that this person could mistreat my child because of the relationship. Apparently that's not a conflict of interest. Fine. If that were all, I would have pulled my daughter out and enrolled her elsewhere quietly. But unfortunately, that's not the major concern. This person has had child abuse allegations brought against her, a since dropped aggravated battery charge, dcf calls made about her alleged drug abuse (we actually were unaware of this until Betsey told me that this person told her this herself) and told my husband herself, that she was let go from another childcare facility for, "pushing a kid". Another parent has gone to school with this person and has chosen to remove their child from Bright Circle as well because of the lack of regard for the safety of her child, and how she was treated by Betsey when she raised concerns about this person as well. All this being said, I believe that since Betsey has been made aware of these allegations, and whether substantiated or not, she is stripping parents of their right to make the best decisions to protect and care for their children.
