    Day drinking on holiday

Cool location on Adelaide's Henley Beach area. Cool combo of old school building and new updated interior. Great hang out and great eats.

The Ramsgate Hotel is a big, beautiful old-fashioned pub on the seafront. I'm no regular here, but I have on occasion stopped in for a brew. It is certainly a nice place to drink when Bacchus (directly in front of the beach) is full, which is always. Although management have done their best to destroy some of the feel by installing massive flat screen tv's, the old pub is still really nice. The bistro looks a bit like an NSW RSL club, but hey, no complaints here. The Ramsgate isn't particularly 'trendy' (and it isn't very trendy to use the word 'trendy') but I'd have a few drinks there on a sunny afternoon.

    1) It's right next to gorgeous Henley Beach 2) Bulmers pear cider on tap 3) $5 Smirnoffs on friday nights. In a nutshell - get your summer butt there for that shit!

Don't order the vegetable stack if you're hungry. Although tasty, it's about 4 small pieces of vegetables for $17.

I've been caught out many times! The service has never been 5 star and sometimes it takes a while to be served. Staff always seem friendly though and I try to relax into the beach vibe instead of worrying that things aren't perfect. I like the atmosphere and it varies delaying on day and time of day. Sunday evenings is always busy and there is live music, plus an enthusiastic dancing crowd. Quite an older crowd the later it gets on Sundays. I have had a few meetings here in the day and it's a great spot to chill out and pretend to work ;-) I agree with Chloe about the food being a bit overly deep fried. I have had some tasty food here, and it does always look fresh and nicely presented, but some lighter options would be welcome. The cocktails look amazing, but somehow I just about always order sparkling wine! I'd recommend keeping an eye on their Facebook page as they put up great photos and details of their specials and new offerings. They put up some enviable sunset photos too. All in all, a fun place in a brilliant location!

There are few and far between choices when it comes to grabbing a good, well priced drink outdoors in Henley Beach on a weekend in summer. And I know you're thinking - "What? There's tonnes of places down at Henley to grab a drink!" Yes but I could list them off for you and that would be enough said... Bacchus is one of the better locations because of their good wine menu and well made cocktail and drinks list. They would get 5 stars in my books for location and the fact you can drink on the foreshore alone. Unfortunately though they have an incredibly ordinary food and tapas menu and no matter how many times I give that place a try I am always disappointed by their unoriginal, over fried, pre-packaged food. It's weird, because their menu and photos of food from Facebook always look so enticing, so maybe I'm just ordering wrong? That said, I won't say no to a nice vino on the deck as the sun sets in winter or summer, enjoying the 25+ eye candy and imagining I own my own apartment on the beach in Adelaide!

Personally, it isn't really all that crash hot - just a typical pub that happens to be next to the beach. Okay, being next to the beach does give it a bit more character, especially since Grange tends to be a little less crowded that Henley Beach down the road. As for the pub there isn't all that much about that that stands out - there is a nice restaurant, a gaming room, a bottle shop, and a sports bar, and that is about it. I did stop by here when I was in Adelaide over Christmas, just to give it another shot, and in the end it really didn't stand out - there are much better offerings further down at Henley Beach.

I had grilled garfish which was perfectly seasoned and fluffy, with lime aioli and a fresh salad: I was well impressed. My boyfriend's teriyaki chicken breast and duck shank with risotto and mushrooms was pretty darn good too but his duck was little dry. The service was very good considering they were flat out and it was Sunday lunch, the prices were a little high but you get the quality you're paying for. My daughter's banana sundae tasted exactly like one of those banana lollies you buy, instead of an actual banana: while for her this was dissapointing, I think there's a lot of people out there who would be pretty darn stoked with a banana lolly sundae.

Eagles Club & Bar Bistro…read more Eagles Bistro is one of those friendly contemporary pub and restaurants catering for the elderly, or the hungry like I was. The service was instant and affable, whilst ordering at the bar, one of the staff overheard my drink order and immediately snapped open a ice cold cider and handed it to me. I cheerfully sat down and waited minutes for food to come careening out the kitchen door onto my table. I gambled on this simple pub food and ordered a half-dozen oysters. Surprisingly they were vibrant and fresh, with a healthy douse Worcestershire sauce. Next came the Chicken Burger, due to my 'Burger Fiend' status. The chips were well seasoned with chicken salt which I pondered on for a while with friends as to why they had sprinkled chicken flavoured salt on, because chicken was already the main feature of the dish. However the burger was delectable and full of the usual suspects all lathered with a spicy barbeque sauce. Not bad for $16. Unfortunately the wonderful experience was dampened by a sighting of a giant pepper shaker, that wasn't even offered to me by the waiting staff. A shameful display, I'll live on...

Well just order more than you think of everything except sides. $8.50 per piece of King George Whiting fried + 50c to have it done grilled in lemon pepper dressing isn't quite the cheap Sunday night takeaway we were expecting. However, the fish was incredibly well cooked (still tender) and seasoned with a tangy oregano and lemon pepper dressing. I also enjoyed the juiciest lemon pepper calamari rings but order double what you think you can handle as when they're not battered they are only half size. Chips were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and a small serving is plenty for 2. The service is incredibly quick and friendly, they even know the locals by the first name. The shop doesn't have that caked in 30 years of grease feel and is clean with a well laid out menu. This would have to be one of Adelaide's best and hidden F&C shops. Walk an extra block away from the beach and hop, skip and jump your way back to enjoy fish you'll think was freshly caught from the sea that day.
