I got a bit of a weird reaction- I was excited to try everything, as I had heard a couple podcasts with the owner - Paulina Garcia Hernandez- talking about making pickles, and so mentioned that to the guy I was talking to. He just said it was his company, and didn't really seem to want to talk about it. The conversation was very off putting. I came in to try everything, but he seemed very put out I was enquiring about whether there were other products ( I had heard about lots of other pickles than I was seeing on the shelves). I still bought a couple things there and the mango jam was amazing. The hibiscus jam was very hard and crunchy, I'm not sure if it's supposed to taste like that as it was my first time, but it's a rather interesting texture...

The market extends outside making it easier to shop around for the best prices. It's an ideal place to try the various bread, cheese, fruit waters/ homemade ice cream. Most place that sell fresh meat also have a grill where you can grill your own meat and eat there. Even if you don't eat there, just walking around the Mercado is an awesome experience.

Once we got off, we were right at the start of the awesomeness. This market is EXTENSIVE. We spent about three hours there eating, walking, and browsing and still felt as if we could have used more. There is an impressive array of fruit stands, chicken and barbacoa, clothing stalls, and everything in between. In addition, we were able to walk into this awesome hall of meat. It was very much like the 20 de Noviembre market in the city, but much larger. We went on a Sunday, which was recommended, as I've heard it is the busiest, but I've heard it's open every day. Also, to note, there are a ton of stray dogs walking around. They are not aggressive, but might follow you if you have a bag of meat!

You'll see local delicacies like mezcal, tejate, and grasshoppers by the buckets. Beware that there is a raw meat alley that does not smell good at all if you're sensitive to that. If you're visiting Oaxaca you will most likely visit this market and the adjacent Mercado 20 de Noviembre. It's a glimpse into the daily lives of many local people and the things they eat, drink, and buy.

You can literally spend all day here This mercado has everything and anything you can think of. Tons of restaurants, and vendors selling seasoned grasshoppers, mole, liquor, chocolate, herbs and spices, ice cream, seafood, meat ect Everyone is super friendly, we felt safe here at all times
