No luck for my valve for LP (Propane), and no valves with conversion kits available. I was able to order one, I bought it, and paid $175 to next day ship it for Saturday. It came and I had it installed, but it wouldn't light all the burners! Two or three of seven might light, until perhaps a minute later, and then if you blew on then, they would all light, but the boiler would shut down if you didn't. No matter how many times we tried, they would never all light, and instead one or two would light, and the rest would just blow gas into the boiler room! Talk about risk of explosion! So there I was with -15 degree temps coming in 24-36 hours and Monday was a holiday. My first guy told me that there didn't seem to be enough pressure of gas coming into the house and to call the propane company because he thought they had a bad regulator on the tank. I called the propane company and they informed me that all the pressure and lines needed to be checked before they would send anyone out, and they recommended I call Premier Air heating and cooling. At this point I was desperate, so I called! I spoke to someone immediately when I called who put me in touch with the Helena rep, Lex. Lex agreed to meet me at my home in 2 hours and he was there right on time. The first thing Lex did was to check EVERYTHING, clean EVERYTHING, and otherwise ensure that all components were working, one by one, before eventually he was able to conclusively determine that my brand new gas valve, was bad! It wouldn't let much gas into the burners at first, and took almost a minute to build up gas pressure to the normal 8-9lbs. He also determined that there was no problem with the pressure coming into the house from the tank outside. It was the bad valve which wasn't letting enough through for way too long for the burners to light normally. So essentially what was happening was that the brand new bad valve I had just installed would have only been good for causing a gas explosion. Thank GOD I was able to get such a talented professional out to help me on SUCH SHORT NOTICE before a holiday weekend and an arctic air blast. AND..... he just happened to have a universal valve with an LP conversion kit that, after installation, worked perfectly and got our home back online with heat and hot water again! Sure, it was a very expensive valve, and pricey service, but Lex earned every penny, and I was so grateful to have this serious problem fixed in the NICK of time before the arctic freeze! Thanks Lex and Premier Air Heating and Cooling. I WILL be calling you guys again if I need you, and recommending your services!

Harvey's did a great job with the emergency service and the technician called around all day to find the right parts that were needed. This year we had a few water connections start leaking and they were able to come repair it the next day without an emergency charge! The technicians are always very through in explaining what is wrong the cost options to repair it. The free warranty they give on labor is great customer service as well.

On October 15, 2024, I called BlueBird Plumbing to repair or replace a leaking outside spigot (hose…read morebib) and to fix a leak on a boiler at my late uncle's house in Bozeman. Andrew (last name unknown) showed up to assess the issues. He agreed to fix the spigot but refused to work on the boiler, claiming it was too old. Instead, he suggested replacing the boiler and hot water heater for a staggering $30,000-$50,000. I declined. While he was there, he pointed out that the pressure-reducing valve on the house was supposedly defective and needed to be replaced. Whether or not it was actually defective is something I'll never know because he conveniently took the old valve with him. I agreed to all the work. The total time he spent at the house was about 1.5 hours, and the final bill came to $3,822. The next day, I called another plumbing company in Bozeman to fix the boiler leak and they completed the job without issue. Out of curiosity, I asked their plumber about the work Andrew had done because the cost felt shockingly high. The second plumber, who worked twice as long and replaced multiple components, charged less than a quarter of what BlueBird had billed. After inspecting their work, he shook his head and said the price was "ridiculous and heartbreaking." Later, he texted me a quote stating his company would have done the same job for no more than $700. I sent pictures of the two valves Andrew had installed to a friend. The hose bib (Woodford Model 17) costs between $40 and $50 at Menards, Lowes, and Amazon. BlueBird billed me $1,293 including labor. The pressure-reducing valve (Watts LF 25AUB Z3) costs $150 at Lowes in Bozeman and $111 on Amazon. BlueBird billed me $2,529. Andrew had told me there was a cheaper valve for $1,900, but the one he installed would "last longer" and cost $2,200. Later, I messaged BlueBird asking for a breakdown of parts and labor costs. Kami Hussey replied with a polished dismissal: "Unfortunately, we aren't set up to break down costs that way, but we'd be more than happy to speak with the estate attorney if that would help. Our flat-rate model allows us to provide warranties that ensure we can come back out at no charge if needed, which is one of many reasons it makes it tricky to separate things." On October 20, my friend sent them an angry message through their website, calling them out for overcharging me and demanding they make it right. Kami called him the next morning and said the owner, Justin Hussey, would call him back. Justin did call that afternoon, but only after he and Kami repeatedly tried to get me to respond instead. I made it clear that my friend was fully authorized to speak on my behalf. During that call, Justin was asked how he could possibly justify charging five times what another local plumbing company would have charged ($3,822 vs. $700). He fumbled through excuses: Bozeman is expensive, the house is in a nice neighborhood, advertising costs money, shop rent, and on and on. (Some of these same excuses he reiterated in an email he sent on October 23.) When asked how much the parts cost, he refused to answer. When asked about their hourly labor rate, he refused to answer. He claimed they had "upfront pricing to ensure transparency" and that I had agreed to it. Transparency? If Andrew had been truly transparent and said, "We'll be charging you the equivalent of 500% over the full retail cost for parts and $2,000 an hour for labor," I would have thrown him out of the house. (For the record, Justin claims Andrew was there for three hours. Even if that claim were accurate--which it wasn't--it would still imply a labor cost equivalent to $1,000 per hour. The bottom line is this: they saw a single woman in her 60s who didn't know much about plumbing, and then decided to exploit me. They assumed no one would notice, and no one would care. They were wrong. This was referred to the Montana Department of Labor and Industry Professional Boards and Licensing, the Montana Office of Consumer Protection, and the Better Business Bureau. If anyone out there finds themselves in a similar situation, don't stay silent. Report it.
