I have found myself doing a lot of waiting at an empty bar to have someone eventually saunter over to eventually grab me a beer or waiting 45 minutes for a garlic bread with cheese at lunch. It provided all the basic kitchen amenities needed (stovetop/microwave/kettle/mini-fridge) to allow you to sit back relax & never leave the grounds if you chose to. In addition the cabin had a TV (with built-in DVD, and a DVD library available to borrow from at the office), air-con (which would be certainly welcome during Summer) and ensuite. The location (our primary reason for booking) is great and only a 5-10minute walk from the Macedon V/Line train station (giving you easy access to other areas further down the line, such as next-stop Woodend, home to the Holgate Brewery. Well worth not driving so you can enjoy a few drinks!), and also the local small town with Cafe/Milk Bar/local pub. If ever out Macedon way I think it's a great budget option to stay at!

Mind you, it is a bit of a hike to get to since it is about 50 km from the centre of Melbourne, but fortunately there is a railway station across the road (though getting off the train simply to have a drink at this pub is probably not the best of ideas). I remember seeing this pub as a kid since my Grandparents used to live out here, but it was years before I managed to get around to actually having a beer here. It has a really nice country feel about it, and the sports bar is pretty much separated from the bistro and dining area. There is a huge garden, but you can also sit out on the veranda and watch the cars all go past. Certainly a place to check out if you are able to get up here.

In the 15 years Ive been going to St Andrews pub, NOT ONCE have I ever seen a fight there! Thats a seriously impressive statistic for a pub anywhere! The pub is very child friendly and is run by relaxed people. Although Ive been to the pub more times than I can remember on Saturdays, Ive only been to it on other days perhaps 2 or 3 times - but it still seems nice - although it is a hell of a lot quieter then - to the point where it is almost empty in the afternoons! I can imagine it is pretty good on Sundays though. However, since at the time it was the only thing that seemed to be here (other than the railway station) I wasn't going to get off the train simply to visit this pub. However, when I had my hands on a car I made an effort to visit it, and it is certainly well worth the trip. Sure, Donnybrook is suddenly becoming a new housing estate, however this pub still seems to have a lot of old country charm. It has a lovely beer garden, as well as a really nice front bar. Mind you, the country atmosphere also tends to apply to the locals, so don't expect a trendy inner-city crowd.

Unfortunately they've failed to maintain the quality i saw when i first ate here. I ate here last night and my medium rare steak was as well done as it could have been. I sent it back as it was as tough as work boots too. When the replacement came out medium well, i just conceded to eating the chips and giving up. Their schnitzel is also a pre made freezer type situation, the kind of thing you'd expect from a dingy service station. Everything was dry and clearly not fresh. I hope ill be able to edit this in the future to say they've turned it around but right now i couldn't recommend the place to anyone. A real shame.
