It's not unusual to find Ken in the studio working something. He was working on a drum when I was in today. I've got several of his prints framed and hanging at home and or in my office. I've got just about every tshirt he's produced - awesome with jeans and a sport coat. His family and staff at the shop are fantastic... while Ketchikan is a tourist town, this place is a local artist studio. It's a great place for Alaska Native art for yourself or as an authentic gift. They have a website and I purchased at the studio and online with nothing but great service.

Upon entering the store, I was pleasantly surprised by the selection. The other souvenir shops all seem to be the same with goods likely made in China and not a whole lot that is local. Whereas this store distinguishes itself from the others as it proudly sells Alaskan-made products. I was looking for some Alaskan-made soap and was able to find it here, as well as a beautiful coaster with native art of a crab on top. These pieces of art are absolutely exquisite and are made from materials only available to native artisans. The work is original, certified and not knock offs like you find in the vast majority of the stores throughout Alaska. The owner Mike, who is extremely friendly and informative will explain how this work is certified and what to look for when you are at other stores. The Level of detail on the sculptures and quality of the work has to be seen to be appreciated. Mike, who has been in Alaska for 50 years and in business for 30 years will give you the history of his business and how he travels to various remote parts of Alaska to obtain these works of art and foster the long term relationships with the native artisans to stock his shop. If you settle on a piece of art he will ship it for you back to the lower 48 providing a convenient way of getting it home, especially the larger pieces of work.

If there is a size that you are looking for that doesn't exist then you are basically out of luck. Service was ok. They don't bother you unless you have a question for them. Yes this store is tailored to tourists. We came here on a cruise ship and they are located about 3 mins walk from the cruise ship or basically on the port.

We headed down Main Street and stumbled upon Rail Creek and had a great experience. The store is probably about 750 sq ft and is split with half devoted to totems and half to stone carved sculptures, mostly of animals. The wall of totems had a cool selection with lots of different stories told. They aren't on consignment like some places and they work directly with the artists to create the pieces and provide a retail space to sell them while negotiating a good price they can pass on to us consumers. Win-win. They were willing to make a deal on a mix of pieces but we settled on just one that we are so happy with. I'm so glad we stumbled upon their shop and stayed away from the castings or the over priced consigned pieces that look identical in every shop. Highest recommendation for a great locally made Ketchikan product!
