When we got the food home, we found we didn't get the spinach & cheese naan we had paid extra for. The dishes had only about 8 chunks of meat in each- hardly any. The tikka masala was mild, not medium. The lamb korma was hard, chewy, and in a weird green sauce. Not at all like what we are used to. Flavors bland. Entrees burnt. Never again. At least it was cheap.

When I got to Willow Garden there was a substantial body of people dining in, mainly families. I got to the counter and proceeded in the steps to get out takeaway. After a few attempts of communication with the lady behind the counter, we finally managed to bridge our language barriers. Ten minutes later, with food in hand I was back at my friends place. The servings were more than generous. Willow Garden didn't hold back on filling our containers with delicious food. The flavours, however, were pretty crazy. I sometimes felt that one dish was too sweet and another too salty. The fired rice was ok, but I had the feeling that some of the ingredients were from packet mixes of veges or something. Even though I didn't spend any money, I felt it was worth it. Perhaps my review is also bias because I didn't feel like Chinese that evening. Anyway, my friends stands by Willow Garden.

I arrived to try it all out at 11:30ish on a Friday. It's not overly busy but noisy. You've been warned. The concrete shell of this store means sound proofing isn't an option. Their specialty drink appears to be a cappucino (Genovese beans) with weird and wonderful flavours like nutella or such mixed through. I stick with a flat white that's easy to drink but lacking any oomph. I had read a review previous to going that said ask for a double-shot if you prefer a real coffee kick and I'm inclined to agree. As tempted as I was by the sides menu, I opted for a 6-in Steak & Philly Sub ($10). I've never had a philly steak before but when my plate is served I'm a little lost as what to do with the second slice of baguette. Served as an open sandwich, I'd happily pay a little less for not having the lonesome slice of bread or pay a little extra to have more topping to use on the other slice. I'd actually also love to know if I could have swapped the baguette out for it all served on a bed of spinach. I quite like what's going on at Hansell & Gretel. It's not new but it is a new take on breakfast for this particular area which (and they're directly across the road from iconic Grub Street) I think makes it an interesting game of play for locals! I liked that it wasn't stuffy or pretentious, just familiar food done reasonably well.

It's small, unpretentious but a bit quirky, and does good food and coffee with friendly service and reasonable prices. The menu selection has some interesting things on there (each has a fairytale-themed name - cute), with a mix of savoury and sweet options, but what is excellent is the long list of extras that means you can tailor your meal to suit. I like being able to add avocado and haloumi to everything! There is also a small, slightly more lunch-focused section of the menu which has things like a burger, philly cheese steak sub, and banh mi. I'm told the philly cheese steak sub is good, it definitely is big! I haven't tried any of the sweet menu options yet, but so far the savoury things I've tried have been yum. They have a decent looking selection of cakes/muffins/etc, many of which are gluten-free or dairy-free (or both). Hansell & Gretel is right next to train (Gaythorne station) and bus (390), but free street parking is also available down nearby side-streets. Seating is both inside and outside, I just wish the outside seats got sunshine in winter! It should be a cooler outdoor spot in summer though to make up for it. Latest update: something has changed, and it's more than the refreshed menu with higher prices (that now exceed the value for money tipping point in my opinion - I know the Woodchopper's Breakfast is huge but it's also $28 and for breakfast I just can't bring myself to pay that). I can't quite put my finger on it but H&G is definitely not as great as it used to be, unfortunately. The coffee is still good, they still play good music, and the sweet treats cabinet still rates highly, but my brunch devotion has waned in favour of other places in the area.

They've been there, same location, different names over the years, since at least 2001 when I first tried a kebab as an inquisitive 13 year old. Frozen in time, their display and menu has not changed. Most importantly, the kebab has remained a tasty one, varying only slightly in quality depending on the staff (predominately middle eastern) rolling your kebab. The range on the menu is typical kebab joint fare. Lamb & chicken kebabs are available with their beloved lettuce, tomato and onion (if you're a veteran of kebab joints, that's the order you'll hear the salads shilled in, too!) plus extras such as cheese, tabouli, olives, pineapple and mushrooms. Hot chips are also available, although not once have I ever seen the fryer cooking up a batch. It's all about the kebabs, here. Dolmades (Mediterranean rice wrapped in vine leaves) and even the option for a "kebab burger" is on offer, but as adventurous as I am with my food, I can't seem to go past my old faithful Jumbo chicken with cheese and BBQ sauce, hold the rabbit food. Occasionally, I've done a Lamb kebab with hot chilli sauce, garlic yogurt, cheese and olives which is a bonafide winner, but really, I don't come here for adventure, I stop by because I know exactly what I'm getting. Sadly, neither were inspiring when they reached the table. I have never seen eggs benedict served on a bread roll and the hollandaise sauce tasted like it was from a jar despite a large serving of it. Spanish Eggs are traditionally served in a clay pot or bowl, with the tomato & bean mixture on the base with the eggs cracked into it and baked in the oven. Not this version - poached eggs on the side, with the tomato, caper & olive mixture in a separate serving bowl. However, the toasted turkish bread was tasty and plentiful. Coffee was ok and I can see this place being popular during the week with local workers. Maybe I am just over cafes all serving the same dishes with the same outcomes. When was the last time we went to a cafe who served freshly made hollandaise sauce or had items on the menu that truly reflected their style & background?? One last thing, if you are going to have pop/rock photos on the walls - can you please play some music to reflect your design? I would probably go again, but not for a while.

Having driven past this little centre many times I finally stopped in to nosy about what was going on and conveniently needed to acquire lunch. Mint offer easy and fuss-free Vietnamese meals. I ordered the rice noodles with pulled pork and found myself with a lunch that was clean-tasting, fresh and on all accounts reasonably healthy. A good one to keep up your sleeve, Northsiders!

And we were both super hungry after a pretty long day, so we decided to check out this place especially because the opening hours were at the same time we got on to the road looking for feeds. The salads are delicious! And the service was amazing. The young guy that was serving was mostly likely a newbie but he did a great job! We totally didn't die from all the crazy yucky stuff - but we both did a coma with leftovers for work the next day so a definite plus! Definitely will be back :D
