This cafe, awkwardly positioned in a pocket of Pickering Road, might seem familiar. Their interior has been done before - mismatched plates and cups, famous people as table numbers, kitsch china figurines and oddly, many lifesize jars of Nutella. But give it a chance. What gives this spot a point of difference, in my opinion, is their choose-your-own-adventure style breakfast menu. They give you the base (eggs and toast - $8.90) and the rest is up to you. Pulled pork (china town style, hoisin meets char siu and dances with soy), vegetable fritter, Haloumi, mushroom, hollandaise? The list is seemingly endless. I arrived to try it all out at 11:30ish on a Friday. It's not overly busy but noisy. You've been warned. The concrete shell of this store means sound proofing isn't an option. Their specialty drink appears to be a cappucino (Genovese beans) with weird and wonderful flavours like nutella or such mixed through. I stick with a flat white that's easy to drink but lacking any oomph. I had read a review previous to going that said ask for a double-shot if you prefer a real coffee kick and I'm inclined to agree. As tempted as I was by the sides menu, I opted for a 6-in Steak & Philly Sub ($10). I've never had a philly steak before but when my plate is served I'm a little lost as what to do with the second slice of baguette. Served as an open sandwich, I'd happily pay a little less for not having the lonesome slice of bread or pay a little extra to have more topping to use on the other slice. I'd actually also love to know if I could have swapped the baguette out for it all served on a bed of spinach. I quite like what's going on at Hansell & Gretel. It's not new but it is a new take on breakfast for this particular area which (and they're directly across the road from iconic Grub Street) I think makes it an interesting game of play for locals! Hansell & Gretel is a fairly new spot in Gaythorne, open for breakfasts and lunches every day of the week. It's small, unpretentious but a bit quirky, and does good food and coffee with friendly service and reasonable prices. The menu selection has some interesting things on there (each has a fairytale-themed name - cute), with a mix of savoury and sweet options, but what is excellent is the long list of extras that means you can tailor your meal to suit. I like being able to add avocado and haloumi to everything! There is also a small, slightly more lunch-focused section of the menu which has things like a burger, philly cheese steak sub, and banh mi. I'm told the philly cheese steak sub is good, it definitely is big! I haven't tried any of the sweet menu options yet, but so far the savoury things I've tried have been yum. They have a decent looking selection of cakes/muffins/etc, many of which are gluten-free or dairy-free (or both). Hansell & Gretel is right next to train (Gaythorne station) and bus (390), but free street parking is also available down nearby side-streets. Seating is both inside and outside, I just wish the outside seats got sunshine in winter! It should be a cooler outdoor spot in summer though to make up for it. Latest update: something has changed, and it's more than the refreshed menu with higher prices (that now exceed the value for money tipping point in my opinion - I know the Woodchopper's Breakfast is huge but it's also $28 and for breakfast I just can't bring myself to pay that). I can't quite put my finger on it but H&G is definitely not as great as it used to be, unfortunately. The coffee is still good, they still play good music, and the sweet treats cabinet still rates highly, but my brunch devotion has waned in favour of other places in the area. read more

This is a GREAT little suburban coffee shop and MORE. Lovely food, friendly staff and a cool interior make this a favourite. I will be honest and state that I'm not a fan of their coffee (but that's personal taste) their food is great and I do love that you can pretty much build your own burger. The staff are always friendly and they are quick and KNOW their menus very well (love staff that know their jobs, menus and are happy to be at work!) The interior is always immaculately clean, neat and tidy and what could end up being a noisy cafe (especially when there are lots of people) hums along nicely without being too loud. There are some great seating options, inside and outside you can sit at longer tables, small cute tables for 2 or 3 bring a group of friends or sit at the bar tables and watch the traffic go buy on Samford Road. The menu does change up from time to time and they don't have traditional soft drinks (Pepsi or Coca Cola) so give some of the other drink options a try. Great for breakfast, brunch or lunch this is a really great little spot with consistant service and food. I'm a FAN! read more

Hansell & Gretel is relatively new as of August 2013, however is becoming a quick favourite. Coffee is 5/5 Food is 5/5 They do the 16 ounce mega cup for us coffee lovers, which is excellent. They have a variety of fairy tale named items, and unlike the gingerbread house in which the witch dwelled in the Grimms tale, you won't be imprisoned and eaten. However you will be fattened up on quality delectables! I'd suggest having the Woodcutters Breakfast the first time you go. This has a bit of everything: beef brisket, pulled pork, spiced beans, bacon, shrooms, haloumi and more! They have an entire page of delicious ingredients so you can make your own breakfast too which is exceptional. The space isn't super huge and it's always busy, however we havent had to wait very long whenever we've been. Also check out the treats at the counter for take away goodness. read more

A bit pricey for breaky but the Wood Chopper Breakfast was very tasty and enough for two to share. Staff is super friendly and location is good if it on your way out for the day but I wouldn't go out of my way to brunch here... I was expecting a bit of a German theme being Hansel & Gretel but it was pretty standard Aussie. read more

We seem to be on the endless search for a decent coffee near our place that we can nip in and out with a takeaway. Some places have started out awesome and others just never quite impressed on first visit. For me Hansel and Gretel is a standout cafe located just near Gaythorne station. Think funky retro with an earthy vibe. It's 70's crockery reminds me of my childhood and the fabulous storybook mural of goldenbook tales reinforces that. The staff are friendly and helpful and as Lani P said don't be thinking they're spending their day playing on their phones, it's just the smart ordering system they have in place taking advantage of existing technology. The coffee is genovese and I've found both my eat in and takeaways tone well flavored, although I wouldn't say amazing. Our first visit we also ate breakfast, and found our meals to be good but not great. Mainly due to the baked eggs being very oily and loaded with semi-cooked chorizo which could have been executed better. I'm prepared to forgive a little though for the stinking hot day it was and will give it a second go soon. I love that they have a broad range of gluten free cakes, treats and loaves on offer and the menu really is a broad range of great choices. Think homey, satisfying foods and more than one option which will have you taking a trip down memory lane or licking your lips at the variety with options like waffles, ice cream (for breakfast yes!), vegetable fritters, pulled pork, or hickory smoked ham. The option to build your own breakfast shows this is a kitchen that is not afraid to work with what you want. There is limited parking at the front but more on offer out the back. Not to be confusing but Hansel and Gretel shares the Gypsy Wagon space and vice versa so there is plenty of dining space for the busy weekends, oh and there is air-con in one half of the restaurant too. read more

It's been about 12 months since my first visit here and it's nice to see that not much has changed! The cafe is still serving excellent coffee and the books are still making delicious eats. Friday brunch with friend who lives nearby was the perfect excuse to try the bubble and squeak (add bacon) again. It tasted as good as the first time I had it, a tasty hash of vege, with haloumi piled on top and deliciously seasoned smashed peas on the side. My friends Eggs Benedict with a side of slow cooked pork was devoured happily and washed down with some tasty coffees. I couldn't resist the caramel slice as I was leaving and boy oh boy, it satisfied a long held craving with its buttery, salty biscuit base and smooth caramel filling. Good to see this business still going strong. I'd love to check our the Gypsy Wagon bar side of the business sometime too! read more

Love this place! Went on a Wed mid morning the first time so it was a bit quieter but a good time to go if you have a little one (toddler) with you. There's also parking or st parking Lovely and attentitive staff, really delicious food and fair prices. Tasty coffee too! Forget the names of the dishes but tried the savoury mince and the spanish hot pot - YUM! I also hear they change up the menu throughout the year which is also something which keeps people coming back. There's 2 rooms but if you had a larger group you may need to book but they do have longer tables so you could all sit together. read more

On arrival the really nice young girl gave us a seat. She brought over two Lenovo tablets and proceeded to to explain how to place an order, make an edit, ad extra's and So on, so forth, and etc. In the time it took to figure out the the tablets I could have said 'two small latte's and bacon and eggs on dough dough' at least 29 Times. We arrived on a Saturday at 11.30 and were told no bacon and eggs on toast... only brunch menu. I had a bacon and egg roll for $10 and my wife had a wrap for $14 the food had obviously been cooked the day before and was reheated before serving. The microwave bacon was hard chewy, the roll was soggy and seemed to possibly have been frozen at some point. The shop was understaffed, they had a full commercial kitchen but obviously not the staff to cook fresh food. The two young people there were doing the best they could. Decided to try out Hansell & Gretel as was in the neighbourhood and wanting a good coffee and a bite to eat. Disappointed with the coffee- tried the Queenslander which was one of their signature coffees with candied macadamia on top. Coffee was weak and macadamia flavour overpowering. Also had their daily muffin which was doughy and pretty tasteless. Perhaps should have stuck to traditional coffee and breakfast given positive reviews that I read on this place. read more
