Pleasantly surprised to find some quality NF books here, but could be better organized. Some of the books tightly wrapped in protective plastic, makes it difficult for casual browsing. I got there on a day when they were having a half price sale and it brought some gems into my price comfort zone. Would definitely visit again, they do seem to get ongoing accessions. read more

Paul "Sweet Pie" might at first be intimidating with his boney self on display, with his little sack of self hanging out - but he's chill. The 9yr old was freaked for a minute, but dived right into the books w/ the wife. There are deals to be had, but this place is much more about the experience than $$. I have not spent a ton of time inside exploring! But on 1st glance this place is going to be a second home to browse and explore! The wonders of this store go from the "clothed" owner and his piano and the bouncy bubbly staff. To the endless supply of anything you can think of along the line of books. Here's one review that deserved a revisit. We trek to Arizona several times a year, and without fail, we stop in Quartzsite for gas both coming and going. Reader's Oasis is always deserving of a visit should we make it through town during the daylight hours (we rarely do, since we're usually hauling ass in the middle of the night.) Yes, the owner is a nudist so BEWARE if you are one with Victorian sensibilities or are bringing in kids you don't want exposed to the clothing optional world. Often, as we're pulling up, Paul Winer is out front, bare butt to the street, arranging the discount and free books on the tables in the sun. Last weekend he was sporting a vibrant, rainbow-colored codpiece that just draws the eye in. He's a really cool guy, down-to-earth. Of course, you've probably got to be. To speak of the shop itself, the place is completely legit. Paul and his wife stock a very wide variety of rare and used books and collectors' items that are well worth the treasure hunt. Reader's Oasis' strength is in its sci-fi/fantasy and non-fiction sections. If you've got an interest in the local indigenous people, paleontological finds, Old West, and such, you're definitely in luck. Be sure to buy a commemorative bookmark of Sweet Pie in all his tanned glory for 50 cents. While signs out front say he's photo-friendly, it feels weird asking him outright to pose for one. read more

Stopped here on a cross country trip to California. If you're driving through the desert on the 10- this is a must-stop! This place is STACKED with books- you can't see them all in one visit, but they're fun to dig through. I found it pretty well organized & labeled section by section so I'm not sure what the other reviewer is talking about. The owner, Paul, is a hippie nudist. He covers his junk and that's about it. He's a definite character. He'll play you a tune on the piano if you ask, and he's actually quite good. I picked up a ton of vintage pulp paperbacks from the 1940s, which I'll maybe read but definitely use for decor. I also found a 1939 copy of Wuthering Heights in excellent condition for something like $8. A steal. I found the prices to be pretty good. He has more than vintage books, though- there are current titles, magazines, vinyl, CDs. Yes, you have to dig through them and some are better than others, but that's the fun of going to a place like this. It's about the adventure. You never know what you're going to find, and it's the perfect roadside attraction to break the monotony of a long drive through the harsh desert. If you are ever in Quartzsite, you MUST stop and visit Paul at Reader's Oasis. Paul is a naturalist, wearing nothing more than a strategically placed piece of cloth held up by wire. Once you get over the initial shock of seeing the owner pretty much naked, you get to enjoy all of the wonderful books, periodicals, music, and audiobooks. Paul has an eclectic mix of pretty much everything that you can think of. Paul, the owner, is also a gracious host. On our visit he provided free drinks, and a tour of his cacti garden. There is always a table of free books up front and stacks of books of every genera. Reader's Oasis Books, and the owner Paul, is a must-visit on ANY Arizona adventure and well worth the drive from the Metro Phoenix area for us locals. read more

One of my favorite places EVER! Fabulously well-stocked used book store with really reasonable prices on all KINDS of crazy crap -- and the owner/host is a super cool old nudist dude who runs around in nothing but a crocheted codpiece. He's super kind and will gladly pose for a photo with you. Shtick aside, it really is a GREAT bookstore. They have EVERYTHING -- and the owner knows exactly where everything is shelved. Always on the list of stops when were are in Quartzsite, the selection is fantastic, the prices range from the very reasonable to the incredible cheap, the staff is super friendly and while there appears to be little order to the chaos a simple inquiry and the staff will get you to the right section. Paul the owner (the naked guy mentioned in so may other reviews) is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. And if you want a photo with him just ask. Let me say, I actually came here to meet Paul the nudist owner. A true eccentric. Unfortunately he had passed away. Met his wife Joanne though and let me tell yo, she was amazing. We chatted about Paul and I got a great sense of how much she loved him and how much he meant to and had done for the community. She also shared about her deceased daughter Celia and I'm telling you the strength she showed in her story and the great devotion she gave to Celia's memory by efforts and creation of a Community garden and Hero's Memorial..truly inspiring. This place is pretty neat. It has an awesome collection of books and other old forms of media. I didn't purchase anything as I was saving for mineral specimens at the shows, but I loved looking through the shelves. Old books of all sorts are for sale, everything from kids, to fiction, non-fiction, adult, science, and anything you can think of. Old VHS's, some comic books, magazines, some cassettes and records. As mentioned elsewhere, the owner is rather... natural... and only wears a thong that barely covers up the meaty bits. So heads up if that'd offend you or your kids. Basically if you're in to old books, this place is absolutely worth a stop to snoop around in. read more

My boyfriend & I stopped by Reader's Oasis after one of his clients told him about Paul, the owner of the bookstore who is a nudist and we wanted to see what the hype was about. Yes, Paul is naked except for a knit cap that covers his man parts - so if you cannot respect that this is his lifestyle, then this isn't the experience for you. However, I found Paul to be such a sweet man who is extremely talented and passionate about his music & is knowledgeable to boot. We had a great conversation with him and he even performed for us on the piano. His bookstore is basically a large treasure chest filled with any kind of book one can dream of - The prices are more than reasonable and I think I left the store with well over 10 books (paperback as well as hardcover) under $40! read more

I like books. I like to read books and I would like to write a books to. This place is real great if you love too read. They have alot of books on rodeos and cowboys. And those books that your mom used to read with a hulking man on the cover That doesn't have on a tshirt. Those guys are cool. They always have woman Grabbing them and hanging on them. Those guys are super cool. It has books on movie stars and rock stars and dragons. They have super old books that look like your great great uncle would of read. Their the type of book that you read in school and probably donot like. Like Jon Signbecks the Pearl. That book sucks. This place didnt have a old copy of that one. But it did have the book Sweet Thursday. It was super old. And Paul said it was the first one made. It is real valuble. I allready have one of these though. So I didnt by it. O. Paul is the owner. He is great guy. Super cool. He is like those guys on your moms Books that doesnt have a shirt on. He walks around without that and pants. Pretty fun guy to talk with to. He nows alot about books. For sure a must stop. Sweet Pie is a funny guy, tell's some fascinating stories, he even played us a song on his piano. This was our favorite stop here. We also bought his 1971 "lost tape" and enjoyed it. We was lucky enough to spend 90 mins or so with Sweet Pie and look forward to the next visit. read more

I kept hearing about the Reader's Oasis from both local's and Snowbirds and finally made it my 3rd day in town. The bookstore is a wonderful treasure hunt. Owner, and town icon Paul Winer, knows exactly where every book is even if you can't make sense of it. I loved wandering around the store and seeing first editions right next to well worn paperbacks of Robert Ludlum etc. I asked Paul for some books on mineralogy and instantly Paul led me to the exact spot where I could find what I needed. I bought some hand published works and a book as a gift. This place is not your discount bookstore but you get great service and the prices are very fair. Highly recommend it for books on local interests in mining and history as well as that book you just can't find anywhere else. read more

This place is pretty funny. I didn't know what to expect when I first came here, as I found the place by just driving by. I was there with my grandmother, mom and younger sister and we went in and there was this naked dude there, covered only by a knitted pouch for his privates. My mom and grandma instantly left the store, my sister was in the corner laughing and then left, but I love books, so I kept searching around. They have great historical books, on the area, the desert, the state, out other places. They have pretty much anything you'd like to find. If you can't find anything, you just ask him and he knows right where to find it. I really liked this place and can't wait to go back. read more

I almost didn't stop here and that would have been regrettable. Paul does a wonderful job of collecting and arranging his many, many books! I stopped by after dark when it was "cold" so I didn't get to see the loincloth, but I bought a bookmark which Paul autographed for me. Worth a stop, buy a book! Having spent money there over the past several years, it is extremely unlikely we'll ever return. The man, Paul "Whiner" treated us like we had kicked his dog, Pepper. He was rude, obnoxious and told us to "Get out of here", complete with his tradmark finger ruffle. All this in responce to a question about a book! He may have been called Sweet Pie in the past, but he sure has become Sour Pie now. read more

After hearing about this this place, had to stop by and check it out - and we are so very glad we did! Meeting Paul was one of the highlights of our trip to Quartzite! He is the most wonderful, genuine person you could hope to meet - who just happens to not wear much clothing! I was looking for a book for the drive back home, and ended up leaving with 5-6 from his incredibly well stocked store. Although Paul didn't play the piano for us (he had several other customers that came in after us), we did hear several of his amazing stories and spent a few minutes with Felicia, his cute & pudgy 10 yr old cat. Also were very impressed that Paul took the time to write messages as well as autograph each bookmark we bought and take pictures with each of us. In 1973 I was in a record/head shop in Virginia looking for old blues albums with harmonica players. Thumbing through them I came across a tan colored album with a skinny neanderthal looking man on the cover. The title of the album spelled out "Pleasure Pudding" in phallic symbol letters. Having just inhaled a couple of tokes I broke into white eyed roll back laughter. I bought it and put in on my turn table as soon as I walked through the door. We had about a half dozen friends over and when "Kay" was playing everyone busted up with WTF? Instant fans. Last year I put the album on for my son's friend, Kyle, who is 18 and a blues fan. He said we gotta find out where Sweet Pie is now. Long story short we called the books store and Paul answered the phone. I handed the phone to Kyle and he acted as if he was talking to the Pope. Paul sent him a CD and a note of thanks for thinking of him. Paul thanked Kyle and me for remembering Him! WTF! How could anyone ever forget Him? Just one of the nicest, warmest, friendliest, down to earth and greatest entertaining musicians anyone will ever meet. read more
