Rating: Terrible We had an awful experience with Reading & Son Plumbing. I highly do not recommend their services, especially in a time of emergency or need. We were going into a weekend of hosting 60 people for our Mom's 90th Birthday when our sewage drain backed up on Thursday. We didn't have use of water and toilets. Our Insurance sent the job to Reading & Son Plumbing who sent a plumber that arrived at 3:30 PM on Friday afternoon. We were very happy to see this plumber and thought we were saved - very wrong we were. The plumber spent about 20 minutes on the drain and then reported it was getting wrapped and was too difficult to clear. We had had the drain snaked about 6 weeks prior when it took the guys two hours but they got through the roots and we had draining water again, so we knew that this job could be done if someone just spent the time on it. This plumber didn't want to hear it, packed up his tools, told us to rent a porta-potty and drove away, keen to start his weekend. Obviously, you can't host a weekend of 60 guests without being able to run water so this was an urgent and very stressful situation. Insurance approved a weekend overtime plumber and Jayda, who works for Reading, told us on the phone Friday after the plumber left that she would arrange for an overtime plumber to arrive on Saturday. We were really stressed at this point. She promised she would call us back with details of who and when. After waiting Friday night and Saturday morning with no return phone call from her and a no show on a plumber we were desperate. We couldn't get a hold of anyone at Reading, no one answered the after hours phone, and the emergency call line voicemail was full so we couldn't even leave a message. We were totally cut off - it's astonishing the utter lack of concern or care from the employees at Reading & Sons. Desperate, we had arranged for a porta-potty to arrive on Saturday morning and consulted the man who dropped off the porta-potty for his recommendation of a plumber. He recommended A & B Hunter Sewer Service who 1) answered their phone 2) came within 45 minutes of being called on a Saturday morning and 3) spent the more than two hours required to snake through the tree root and unclog our drain. We are forever grateful to Sam at A & B Hunter who was kind and empathetic and did what it took to get through the root and save our Mom's 90th Birthday Party. Thank you, Sam! I hired Reading & Son to install a new toilet, vanity cabinet, and plumbing fixtures in our main floor bathroom. All was going well until we ran into a snag due to the walls not being square, so Reading was able to finish just half the job. Toilet installation went fine. Reading recommended someone who could rework the cultured marble top, and that work was completed just yesterday. I've now hired Reading to come back out to finish that work as well as some work in another bathroom. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Reading again, obviously. My only complaint is that they're pretty busy and won't be able to be here for another week. read more

The handle for our main shut off for the house broke off. Travis came out and replaced it. While he was doing that he discovered the inlet was missing a stiffiner. This could have caused a big leak in the crawl space. Really glad he found that! He also fixed that. He was very professional and personable. We'll use this plumber again. read more

We had purchased a hot water heater a few years ago from Reading. Last weekend, it stopped working. We called Reading and they replaced it since it was still under warranty. They took such good care of us and their workmanship is outstanding!! The service person who came to install was so friendly and knew what he was doing. I had an appoint with them September 29th & October 6th. Both appointments were scheduled for a two hour window for them to show up. Both days I had to call after they hadn't shown up or called two hours after the allotted appointment time. On September 29th they informed me they had emergencies and eventually showed up. On October 6th they said they were sorry they couldn't get a plumber out to my house today (after I had waited 4 hours!) but would check their schedule. We have done business with them before and this is ALWAYS how they conducted their business. They NEVER call the customer to keep them informed of their failure to come at the appointed time or ever. I called to have a washing machine supply valve replaced. The plumber ended up repairing it, which worked alright. Unbeknownst to me, the plumber did not replace the washing machine discharge line back into the drain, so the first time I ran it, water dumped all over the floor which caused damage to some of my things. The plumber also asked me if the house was mine or my parents house - I was there with my children WTF? How rude. read more

We had a plumbing emergency last night that also required the water company shutting off the water at the curb. Amy in the office was super responsive to our request and the plumber, Adam, arrived at our house as the water company was finishing up and went right to work. We had two problems. He fixed the emergency problem and turned the water back on to the house. He was back at 8am to fix the secondary problem, so we didn't get charged the after hours rate for the secondary problem. We appreciated Reading's prompt response to our problem and efficiency in fixing the reason for the emergency call. We also appreciated the plumber's ability to turn the water back on at the curb so we didn't have to pay the water company double to come back and do that. With COVID-19 still rampant we thank Adam for taking precautions in our home by wearing a mask. read more

Terrible customer service. I had service last week to clean the drain pipe due to sewage backup. The plumbers that came out were very rude. They mocked me when they thought that I was out of earshot. They refused to answer my questions about the bill and instead continued to rudely state "this is the price, do you want me to send you the bill?" I stated that I didn't want it sent (I wanted to pay in person while they were there) and wanted to clarify it. When I pointed out that they were charging for more time than they were there and left a mess that they should clean up, he walked away and stated that they would mail the bill. After they left I saw that they had cracked a mirror that they moved. They also used and soiled my hose without permission. The hose was sitting in a large can because I had recently cleaned and disinfected it, and they grabbed it out of the can and dragged it through sewage, wasting all of my time and effort cleaning it. I called the company immediately after they left and left a message. I got a condescending voice mail in return while I was returning to work. When I called back and spoke with the manager who left the message she continued to be condescending and didn't care at all about any of the issues that I raised. She stated that the service men were with her and said they didn't break anything, though she never conferred with them while on the phone and it seems strange that they would have brought it up before if nothing happened. I was told that it was my word against theirs and that they didn't break it. I didn't get so much as an apology for anything, the manager just kept telling me what I owe. I didn't want to pay over the phone with a card for security reasons and told them to send the bill(which I haven't received yet). She stated that they would send it to their collections lawyer. I don't feel like anyone at this company cares about the customer at all, or about anything other than getting paid. Absolutely abysmal customer service, I am extremely upset with them. There were additional scheduling and contact issues that aren't even worth mentioning next to the rudeness and ruined property. read more

Repeatedly ignored my requests for an update and on multiple occasions told me they would call me back that day and did not. The third time I called after I wasn't called back I cancelled and they weren't apologetic at all. Maybe they do good work, I'll never find out because they have the worst customer service I've received from anyone in years. Just trying to save others the trouble. We used Jim Reading & Son plumbing for installation of a garbage disposal and repair of the dishwasher line. The owner Jim, who came to the house wildly misquoted the actual estimate of cost (the invoice was ultimately almost 50% more than we were advised to expect), which was quite a shock. We paid the estimate amount we were quoted by Jim and in writing requested they honor the estimate since it was so vastly off-base from what we had been quoted. We received a response that was essentially: "Sorry for your misunderstanding and that's just too bad, but this is how it is." We feel completely ripped off by THEIR misrepresentation. Warning to anyone thinking of engaging their services: GET ESTIMATE IN WRITING... or better yet, call somebody else. read more

Had an excellent experience with them about a month ago on the installation of a water softener. The only negative was that they didn't not show up on time and there was no communication. The plumber and helper were professional and did a great job. So, I scheduled with them to have a hot water heater installed. Again they didn't show up during the 10-12 window and again no communication. The plumber arrived 2 hours late (not his fault). I live on a steep hill in the country and he had trouble dealing with that. He complained about the drive, how he didn't know how he would get back down, how the helper would get up, etc. I told him that the last guys from his company parked in the drive and had no issues. Showed him the water heater and told him about an issue that needed fixed. He questioned whether I wanted the issue corrected, which was very strange since he is a master plumber and the inflow/outflow was reversed causing the water heater to work incorrectly. What kind of master plumber would install a new water heater that way? I was upstairs talking on the phone to my daughter about these things when he came storming into my living room (no knock, nothing) and said "Is there a problem"? I told him 'no' as I had had no plans to say anything to him until he started attacking me because he eavesdropped on my conversation and was angry. He was still complaining about the road and I said it's always a problem for people who aren't used to driving in the country. He YELLED,"Do you know how long I've lived in the country? DO YOU?" I said, 'No, I don't even know you." He yelled some more about me making assumptions. I said his behavior was unacceptable and I was calling the office. He said he was, too. Ultimately, the people in the office didn't care about anything I had to say, just gave a pro forma apology and cancelled the job. I asked them to talk to the plumber who did a great job for me previously and ask him how I was to work with if they wanted to know the truth of who was the problem in this instance. Very unfortunate because I was very satisfied with the first plumber. read more

Do not use Reading and sons plumbing from Peoria, IL. There company is so small they cannot meet their commitments when a single person calls in sick. They improperly installed a water softener for me a couple of years ago requiring them to make repairs on a brand new system. But sadly, I gave them another chance only to have them screw up a simple appointment. And let me tell you how horribly I was treated by the owner when I finally got through to him. He was a complete jerk. Refusing to come and fix things during hours I would be available. Rude and insulting. He even went so far as to insinuate my political affiliation because I refused to be bullied by him. Like that would be any of his business. This is how they treat an elderly, old woman. There are far too many truly reputable companies out there to put up with these incompetent individuals. read more

I have had 3 encounters with this company and have always received friendly/prompt service. I must admit 2 of those times were contracted through another company. I had draining issues. But the guys representing this company went above and beyond. My last encounter was with Brad. He didn't seem to mind that I was in his space asking questions along the way. The 3rd encounter was over the phone. The employee was honest about whether a job could be don't based on description of picture I sent. I appreciated the honest and it saved me from paying an unnecessary service fee. read more

I had a horrible experience today with Reading & Sons Plumbing. They were called to fix a valve for the installation of a new water softener. I was watching the house for my daughter while she was at work. Someone at that business told her they would call me & should arrive around 9 for what they told my daughter would be a 1hr job. She followed up with them by phone around 10 & said to cancel her appt because we no longer had time for them to complete the job before I had to leave for another appt. So then a plumber shows up minutes later. He clearly did not want to be here but assessed the situation & told me what needs to be done but he planned to reschedule the appt. He also said his company didn't shut off the water Illinois American had to do that. I had the same valve replaced at my house a while back & they did shut off the water & turned it back on. It seemed the water was partially shut off by Illinois American & the plumber said we would have to call them to come out, dig up, and replace their shut off at the street. He went out & turned it back on. I asked if he tried to turn it off because if that worked Illinois American wouldn't need to dig it up etc. he just kept telling me louder & louder that he had turned it on. His attitude, tone, and demeanor was extremely rude and I told him to leave. His answer was to shout at me to have a good day & slam the door behind him. This guy was the rudest worker I've ever dealt with. He obviously did not want this job. I called the owner who just kept telling me it was a miscommunication problem.
