Collegiate Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy - Custom Knee Bracing

I had a pretty significant ski accident in January 2011. A co-worker had recommended I go to a…read morephysio place in town, and I did. However, after a couple visits, I was told I was good to go. Clearly I wasn't, because my knee was nowhere near stable, and I was not really getting better. By the way, this review is absolutely about my experience, and NOT because I know Mel, who runs Collegiate. I am a self-labeled consumer advocate who just wants to help people make the right choices. Anyway, I went there in the early summer of 2011, clearly frustrated about the knee. The tests that were performed were over and above what was done at the previous physio place. And the prescribed exercises helped a lot, when combined with urban hikes (ask me what an urban hike is, if you're curious) and regular hiking. I re-injured it again this year, and again, after a few months of it not really getting better fast enough, I returned to see what the problem was this time. It wasn't exactly the same injury this time. And sure enough, the stretches prescribed have made a difference right away, provided I keep them up in the prescribed intervals. They have moved to a new location which I think will be HUGE for them, and for accessibility to all.

Treatment in not cheap so I choose to go to a place that is good value for my money. I am glad Red Deer has such an outstanding place. I only wish they were not as busy so I could get in quicker when pain arises.

In fact it's not easy to get an appointment with him for a reason. Clearly there are a lot of satisfied patients. I can only give 3/5 here though, as I'd rather give 3.5/5 but can't. The reason for the A-OK rating is that I had a pretty significant ski accident, and hurt my knee. I was recommended by a co-worker to go there, so I did. After two treatments, I was told that I should be good to go, and that it wouldn't be out of the question to see me back on the slopes for some spring skiing. What I found funny about this is my knee was nowhere NEAR ready for any such activity. The stability was hardly there, and as of today, I have yet to return to the hills and that was closing in on 3 years ago. I ended up going to a sports therapist to get it to where it is now (close to healthy). What probably should have happened after that was a third checkup to see how it was doing, along with some proper stretches that could have helped speed up the recovery. The injury I sustained was similar to what some NHLers experience when they have a knee injury. I should really be better by now, according to how things looked. I'm not deterring anyone from going to this place. But ask more questions, as I should have, and you will probably give these guys 4 stars.

I saw Stephanie, who was nice enough, but didn't pinpoint my problem. She quickly worked through textbook questions, used the ultrasound machine, threw on the NMES machine with ice, and then a short piece of some strange double layered tape - not quality kinesiology tape. She did not have me try any exercises throughout the appointment, did not massage/stretch/mobilize the affected area, nor did she give me a set of exercises to do at home. There was no diagram, model, or explanation of the source of my pain. I left the appointment questioning her diagnosis and without a recovery plan. With what little was accomplished and the quality of the appointment, I then had to pay $120. I am a very athletic individual and have been to physiotherapists before - an experienced physiotherapist cost $80-100 for the first appointment. Overall, extremely overpriced and below average physiotherapy.
