Sadly, I was quite disappointed with my experience. Upon walking in, you'll notice that the walls from top to bottom are covered in various vintage t-shirts that vary in quality -- from Gildan to American Apparel -- and design. Unfortunately, they aren't organized very well, price tags don't exist, and if you're lucky, you might get to meet someone from the store. In my case, I happened to catch the owner, who briefly acknowledged me, on his way to the back room to each lunch with his employees. So customer service doesn't exist. And the lighting is really dim. Did I mention that there aren't any price tags? I did, however, find a couple t-shirts that I liked. There's the Prince shirt that I mentioned, as well as a Minneapolis Lakers throwback. (I have MPLS Lakers fitted, so I was pumped.) Not knowing the price of the shirts, I hollered to the backroom to ask about them. The owner disgruntledly replied, "$15 for the American Apparel made ones, $12 for everything else." I asked to buy both. While paying, I said, "cool place, man." He replied, "ok." When I arrived home, I realized that the Minneapolis Lakers tee had three huge stains all over the front. They were only noticeable in the bright light. Perhaps that's why Zimmerman is dim inside.... I hate to do this to a local business, but I absolutely cannot recommend an establishment with poor products and service.

It was also over a holiday weekend when I sent the initial email asking when and if they could fulfill the order in time. In the end I was able to send them my designs made in Adobe Illustrator and there was never a problem. The order was finished on time and turned out great. Everyone that I dealt with through email or over the phone was professional and took care of everything that I needed.

Lu even called me with an update too! Now the issue will be resolved. When discussing a project, both Michelle and Jim will bring up things you might not have thought of, such as things that might cause issues or options that might save you money. For example, what were designed as black and white pages in my dual bw/color project were stilled viewed in their printer as color because the computer-operated printer could detect shades of color within the black. Michelle worked a little magic to force those bw pages to print as such. There was a small charge for her time to do this, but it ended up saving me thousands by printing those pages as bw rather than color. Jim and Michelle are very easy to work with and certainly know what they are doing. It is nice to be able to talk directly with the bosses! I have several more projects in mind and I know who I'll be going to when the time comes to print them. The end result is that my projects come out looking very professional. I couldn't be more pleased.

I had the privilege of attending a studio tour of the facilites where he produces his art. Stationery, business cards, invitations, certificates...you name it and he can print it. Have him print an invoice; that too will end up looking like an artifact :) He took the time to walk us through the entire process and patiently answered all our (mostly my) questions. He even allowed us to print little booklets and sent up back with souvenirs. His website is a great intro to his work, but if you can setup some time with him to visit the studio, you will fall in love with this method of print. Oh, I should also mention that he even tooled his own equipment to make his own paper at some point. Interesting process, interesting work and an interesting guy behind it all who is willing answer any questions you have (regardless of your print experience). Don't just check out the studio, give him your business and support a true craftsman.

His choice to go into this business is tied to who he is as a person rather than what kind of career would make a lot of money. The quality and value of his work has provided for his family and a good life. Quality and value. That, really, is all that this review needs to say. There are now many more people experimenting with letter press in Minnesota, and some are pretty good. But I doubt that there are any who are in the same category as Nomadic Press in terms of quality and value. His dedication to traditional and time-honored methods of production and service alone puts Nomadic in a separate category, but he is also an artist with considerable taste and heart who can guide the customer to the best available result in the market. My business cards are not only read, but literally fondled by people I hand them to. They have weight, texture and they mean business. The Pantone colors specified by the designer were perfectly matched in the inks mixed by Kent.
