Rental was quick and easy, taking maybe two minutes. This shop is priced just a bit higher than the older bike rental (the one adjacent to mini-golf), but the Wheel Fun folks are nicer, quicker, and easier to deal with (the other shop has an old guy who will try to talk you OUT of renting a surrey!). By the way, the double-surrey is huge fun. It's not hard to pedal or drive at all. My family has done this two years in a row now. It's a great way to see the island.

One was dirty and the other one was perfect. The dirty cart only had seat belts in the front seat. Without seat belts in the other 2 seats, we couldn't use the cart safetly. We also discovered that the cart without seat belts had non working headlights. I spoke to a local police officer and he said that legally the cart rental company can rent anything they want, even if it's not safe. The responsibility for having safety features is totally on the driver. So, Kustom Karts can rent all the junk they want :), which is clearly exactly what they do! The cart was too dangerous to use so we made the best of it and just used the safe one. I asked the owner to refund some of the money we spent to rent the dangerous cart and she refused. We frequent St. Simon's for family vacations so next time we will rent from someone else. If you rent from Kustom Karts, be aware that they will stress all of the safety rules to you when you reserve the carts, but they clearly don't follow through by renting safe carts across the board. Too many other companys to rent from so we will scratch this one from our list of preferred places to spend our money.

It would have been nice if he had started with "we are going to start by going upriver and looking for the manatee. When we get there, look for ______. Then we will go to the marsh creeks and look for birds such as ______, _____, and ______. We will then cross the channel and see if we can spot the bonnet-head sharks." We went and did all of these things, but it would have been nice to have an introduction in advance so that we could have anticipated our experience and been better able to ask good questions. The bad - Due to a failure of the owner, Jamie, to check the time of sunrise, she scheduled our tour to begin before sunrise which is not permitted. She also told us to arrive a little early to fit PFDs. The result was that my wife and I were waiting in the dark for 40 minutes before our guide arrived. Very unprofessional! What were we offered for the inconvenience of our wait in the dark? Half off? Twenty percent refund? Nope! Just two hollow sounding apologies where both David and Jamie tried to lay the blame on the other. As a frequent traveller who tries to pack in as much as possible during a vacation, I recommend to all of my fellow outdoor lovers to go with the competition who hopefully will value your time more than Turtle Tides apparently does.

On a weekend or holiday, definitely get there early or they will run out of bikes! Note that if you ride on the beach, bike must be THOROUGHLY cleaned upon return or you will incur a fee. Rental included a helmet and bike lock. We cleaned our helmets and bike handles with rubbing alcohol, and all was good. Bikes functioned well, and we did 10 miles before dark. Stopped for dinner, locked up the bikes, ate, and rode home. Made for a great day! If you didn't/couldn't bring your own bike, riding around Jekyll is worth the money. I first rode the full island perimeter with friends in the late 80s, and I never forgot it! I was 8yo and did a 20-mi ride (I was so proud of myself), and the experience captured my heart. Do it! Get some exercise and bike the island up close and personal! Make sure to hit the trails on the interior of the southern part of the island! One mile biked is equivalent to about about 400-440 steps in terms of exercise, but walking the whole island takes forever. Bike it to scope things out, and then go walk your favorite parts later.
