Red Collar Rescue is a fantastic organization and one that I am proud to contribute to and volunteer with. Red Collar takes in the critically injured and abused animals and spares no expense in getting them the best of care. Once healthy and well, Red Collar Rescue carefully screens potential adopters to make sure the animal and human are a good match, and the animals are never in harm's way again. I have been involved with other rescues before, and the amount of information required in order to foster or adopt is in line with what all other upstanding rescues require. When you are placing an animal in a home, you intend for it to be a FOREVER home. Therefore, it is 100% understandable that the organization would have a lengthy application process and multiple requirements. With the overcrowding situation in animal shelters in Houston, the last thing we need is for more animals to go back into shelters or rescues. That's why rescue groups like Red Collar need to do everything they can to ensure that each dog goes to a wonderful, loving home. Many times, the dogs come from traumatic situations - either from the streets or they were neglected or abused in a home. Therefore, they may need extra love, care, attention and TRAINING to transition positively to and in their new life. Red Collar Rescue is an all-volunteer organization, and the members put in a huge amount of their time and and often their own money to ensure that all of the dogs in their care receive the medical help they need. It is a labor of love for these very dedicated people! Red collar rescue does miracles with the dogs. I was recommended to them by my previous vet. I fell in love with one of their dogs, who was recovering from a broken leg. The adoption process was super smooth, and would totally recommend again. We filled out an online form, which covered the basic (dog experience, life changes, style of life), and then did a meet and greet. At that point, we knew we were destined to each other. We volunteered to foster a dog with neurological issues, which they took from paralyzed to running again. Our foster and own dog became best friends, and we fostered failed. It was the best decision ever. Like every rescue dog, ours needed a lot of TLC. They had some fears that we worked through. Both of our dogs needed to be adopted to experienced owners that could spot any possible issues in the future of their illness coming back. One of them had to get a surgery to get her previous plate removed. Fast forward to a couple of years, you can barely tell that they had any issues. They have also adapted to life with a baby brother, and they're thriving. Charlotte cares A LOT about each dog she rescues, and she will look for their best home. She is extremely busy, so many dogs get dumped and have medical issues. If she doesn't get back to you right away, be patient! She will get back to you. Red Collar Rescue has been a champion for Houston's most desperate, injured and badly abused dogs for nearly 20 years. Their commitment and care for the very worst cases of abuse is second to none. That makes the recent spate of 1 star reviews posted here so surprising, untrue and unkind. Where do they come from, and why? To summarize, a sweet little Red Collar rescue named Asha was recently mauled by a pit bull. That attack took place while Asha was in the care of a local for-profit training business. The pit broke through a mesh wall separating their enclosures. Asha had gone there for socialization to help overcome the fears caused by her lifetime of mistreatment. But she got the opposite and is back in the hospital fighting for her life at Red Collar's expense. That other business? Not answering the phone now. Showing a restraint that hasn't been earned, I won't name them. That wouldn't help Asha. Saying a prayer for her might though, so please go for it. read more

I stumbled upon the Red Collar Rescue by accident in a pet store. They were having an adoption day and I fell in love with a sweet pup. We moved forward with an application. The application itself was wildly detailed going so far as to asking what life changes we expected to transpire in the next 5 years. After submitting the application on November 11th, I heard from no one outside of the automated email sent to confirm the application had been submitted. After a few follow ups and comments on their social media posts I got a response on November 18th that the next step would be a vet reference check and a meet up with my current pup and the potential adoptee. Per their suggestion I did call my current vet and give them a heads up to expect a call to help the process along. I did not hear back again from the Rescue about setting up a meet and greet until November 24th stating that the foster parents were already out of town. I already knew this because I had found the foster mom on Facebook and we had been in contact. Props to Kirsty who is an extremely kind human, From there we touched base again on December 3rd (post a personal vacation) and gave my availability for a meet up. I also sent this availability to the foster mom to see which would get a quicker response. Kirsty responded quickly and we had a meet and greet the next day. The pups seemed to be a good fit. We were excited and looking forward to hopefully welcoming our new pup home in time for Christmas. I followed up with the rescue consistently from there and was met with responses days sometimes a week later siting that they were busy, had been at the ER every night with new rescues or by the time they got home had just forgotten to call me. I had my first and only call with Charlotte on December 20th. 39 days after initially submitting an application. The call lasted 16 minutes of which she spoke for about 14 minutes of. During which time she spoke to me as if I had never seen or taken care of a dog in my life. She harshly passed judgment on the low income vet I currently utilize, saying they are not full service and also commented on how I currently take care of my dog that I have had for almost 7 years. Siting that he probably wasn't receiving adequate tests and care at my current vet because in her eyes it was not full service or up to snuff. I think got a 5 minute long lecture about the dangers of Sago Palms. We have one in our front yard. When I stated I knew that they were harmful to dogs she cut me off and said "No honey, not harmful LETHAL" and went on to tell the tale of 3 or 4 poor animals she new that had fallen victim to a sago palm. Making sure to site that I probably didn't remember what it was like to take care of a puppy since my dog is now about 7 so I needed to be reminded that poppy chew on everything and may go for the Sago Palm. Charlotte went on in detail about how much personal time and money she puts into these animals to the point where I thought I was going to be asked to write a check to continue with the application process. The day after the phone call, I sent an email requesting our application be pulled and clearly made my thoughts known about the phone call we had the day before. I also spoke with the foster mom that day and stated if Charlotte reached out and had a conversation (not asking for an apology) with me that was more level headed, I'd be willing to reopen the application. I have not received a response to my email, even to confirm the application had been pulled. I gave time for the holidays to pass to receive a response to the email prior to writing this. People should be vetted prior to taking home a dog, they shouldn't be made to feel that they are unworthy of it. These dogs need loving homes, but they will never leave their foster homes if the current administrative process stays in place. read more

I am providing this rating because the company is unorganized. The coordinator did not typically respond in a timely manner. When the coordinator did, she went over my application but I felt that I was being judged by my age -- not my job, stability with finances, home visit. After communicating with the company -- my application was randomly denied because of the possibility that I would have children in the future (I don't have children and never said that I was planning on children -- I don't want any). I had inquired about the dog's capability with children and believed that I was penalized for doing so. No one discussed with me the matter further. Very abrupt decision. Two stars for keeping the animal's welfare at heart with home checks and scheduled meetings (phone and in-person) prior to adoption. I'd look elsewhere though. Poor communication. read more

This place seems shady. Adopt at your own risk. I realize they try and match dogs with the perfect home, but they ask you for a lot of personal information. More than any shelter I know. There's no phone number nor physical location. With so much identity theft, I felt uncomfortable. The only way to communicate is by email and even then, are not responsive. Also, there's too many fees: application, adoption and additional fees for "medical issues that can occur". There's no money back if your dog isn't suitable for your home nor can you view another dog and/or return your dog. You don't even see Red Collar Rescue if searching for shelters online. To me it seems rather shady the whole thing. My recommendation is to go to another shelter that's less invasive and less expensive. Harris county pets lets you view all dogs, interact with them and vet fees are much cheaper. read more

I have volunteered and fostered for RCR for several years. Charlotte, who founded and tirelessly runs the rescue, is amazing! Her dedication to the homeless, sick and injured pet population is unbelievable. She will go to the ends of the earth to help a dog in need. Charlotte works tirelessly for the animals. She has amazing dogs, and she does an amazing job finding them the right homes. She is an angel for the animals. We adopted our dog from her, and she made it a seamless experience. She takes her time finding the right home for each animal. She doesn't take the easiest animals, they take the difficult cases, that others will not take. The abandoned, abused and cruelty cases that she rescues to give them another chance at a good life. She relies on donations , but uses a lot of her own resources to help save the animals. She runs an amazing organization. read more

We first adopted from Red Collar in 2015. Charlotte advised us against the dog we were looking at, and suggested another she thought would be a better match. Dixie turned out to be a wonderful dog. We since adopted another dog from RCR and he is great. They do excellent work in Houston saving dogs from the kill shelters and distributing them to good homes. Highly recommended. read more

I am the lucky girl who got to adopt the dog that Jennifer B. returned. I couldn't have enjoyed my experience with Red Collar Rescue more. Charlotte's top priority is making sure that each dog and family find their perfect match. I filled out the application on their website and received communication back within 24 hours. After meeting my sweet baby at a park, Charlotte said that other dogs would be arriving shortly if I would like to meet them, but I knew Winston (formerly Phoenix) was the one for me. A home visit was conducted, I received help securing a vet that was involved with his history (rescued with a 5 lb tumor on his foot and endured several surgeries to repair the damage), and Charlotte helped me create a list of all the things I needed before Winston could officially be mine. Surprised to even see a few negative reviews so I read them and can answer every one of them by saying this. Red Collar Rescue is very thorough about matching up dogs with prospective adopters. Matching dog to adopter is an art form that not all rescue groups have the abilities to do. A tremendous amt of work goes in to it + alot of experience with getting the best outcomes. When I say goodbye to my foster for the last time, I know that they've gone to the best place possible and are now on their way to their best lives. I never have a regret or worry about their welfare or their future. I wouldn't foster for any other organization except Red Collar. I am writing this review with a broken heart. I adopted my fur child (a dog named Nicolas) seven years ago. Red Collar and Charlotte were wonderful to work with. I appreciate that they want to know who is adopting their dogs and what kind of home they will be raised in. Today Nicolas had a heart attack and died. It was terrible thing to see. I did get him to the vet but it was too much and Nicolas has crossed the rainbow bridge. Good organization. Good people. read more

I am a senior officer with a national firm. I spend quite a bit of time in researching groups I contribute to. Over the past several years I have been especially impressed with Red Collar Rescue. They are really making a difference for rescued dogs. 100% of the money goes to the rescue, welfare and placement of dogs into permanent homes. What I particularily like is thier stringent adoption policies. They make sure a rescued dog goes to a well balanced adoptive family with personal interviews and qualification requirements. Sometime applicants, paticularily those that are not going to be good parents, already have issues or are simply imature do not qualify. That is tough. But it takes an organization focused on what is best for the animals to qualify adoptive families to make a "long term" difference. I love RCR! They saved a sick cocker spaniel from deathrow at BARC, who blossomed into our beloved Duchess Kate, a special needs dog who is blind. She wouldn't have had her second lease on life without their medical assistance, and now she is a beloved member of our family. We were the 4th potential owners that Kate interviewed, following a phone interview with the foster mom and a long questionaire, but that's good. Kate chose us because we focused on what she can do, and RCR's careful screening process brought us together. They are an amazing group that really, really, puts the animals first. read more

I appreciate all that Rescues do, but had reservations about the amount of personal information required by this 5013C non-profit entity in their application, prior to my husband and I even meeting an animal. With Identity theft so prevalent, submitting information to ANY unknown non-profit requesting all contact info including cells, your TX DL, employer(s), work schedule, vacation plans, etc--ie. which means time that your home is vacated--was not in my comfort zone. I understand they are trying to match animals to a client, but there are limits on what one should provide, IMHO. I could not find Organizational info on their site, re: Officers of the Non Profit, etc and/ or do their volunteers go through background checks? Therefore sent back a letter of declination, when I'd received their email with app. They may be nice people, but I'd rather err on the side of caution. read more

REDCOLLAR RESCUE is an all volunteer 501(3)(C) animal rescue that provides rescue services, medical care, foster care, and adoption to stray and abandoned dogs and cats in Houston and surrounding areas. I've fostered for Red Collar since 2013 and have adopted two of my fosters through them. For as much work as RCR puts into saving the dogs, and the costs they incur, you cannot put a price on adopting your new best friend. Yes, they vet you and yes the process is a bit tedious but at the end of the day this is about finding the best home for the pups and kitties that Red Collar has saved. My experience with Red Collar Rescue was great! I was looking for a black lab and when I found one I was interested in, I learned that she was available with Red Collar. However, she was a package deal with her brother. Red Collar recognized the 2 were very bonded and didn't want to split them up. They had these two in their program for over a year just to keep them together. I instantly fell in love with both and knew I was not going to let them go. I had adopted through the SPCA and Humane society before. This was my first through a rescue group. All went very smoothly. I did an initial intro and then they came to check out my house. Fine by me. I want it to be safe! I got to spend some quality time with their foster mom and the dogs and then we were on our own. Best experience adopting a dog that I've ever had. I highly recommend them. Now I foster for them. They care about each and every dog in their care. They really do everything in their power to get the dog ready to be adopted- anything from training, medical care or simply learning how to live in a home. Very unfair adoption process. The lie about the nature of their dogs. I went through a 2 day adoption process to adopt a dog that supposedly was great with children. That was literally the main reason I wanted to adopt this dog, only for them to at the last minute tell me this dog is too timid and doesn't need to go to a home with children. We were going to adopt a dog from here, we had talked to them, seen the dog and had plans to return to see the dog again when the lady we were speaking with left town without informing us and then over a week later told us that during that time her friends had shown interest in the dog and she gave it to them. Not over the phone like we had been dealing with her, but through e-mail! This behavior is completely unprofessional. There are people out here who actually want to adopt homeless dogs, however they seem to be extremely judgmental about which home, i.e. their own friends, the dogs get to go to. I would definitely think twice about going to them. They are rude and unprofessional. read more

We adopted our first dog from Red Collar Rescue/Charlotte Liberda in October 2009. We found our minature boxer mix in an online photo, fell in love with the picture and immediately emailed Charlotte who responded within a few hours. We arranged to meet Molly that weekend and Charlotte brought her over for a home visit. We were immediately smitten with Molly. Molly was rescued from the dog pound in Brazoria county. Red Collar rescue spayed her, got her up to date on her shots and paid for her heart worm treatment. Molly also worked with a dog trainer before we adopted her. The price of the adoption was only $200!!! And we saved a very sweet, loving dog from the pound. We got our second dog, Wilbur in 2010. We were fostering him for Red Collar, but fell in love with Wilbur and kept him. His spaying and medical treatments were all paid for. And once again we saved a sweet dog from the pound. Red Collar rescues many loving dogs that deserve forever homes and takes pride in caring for these dogs so they are healthy and ready to be adopted! We have adopted 3 dogs through Red Collar Rescue. What an awesome organization!! RCR has saved hundreds of animals from death row at the shelters or starvation on the street. They take every rescued animal immediately to the vet for a complete physical including vaccinations, spay/neuter, micro-chip and any other medical attention they may need such as surgery, heartworm treatment, etc. RCR conducts home visits and interviews members of the household to make sure the dog will have a safe, pleasant environment in which to live. Many factors are considered when matching a human and canine such as size of dog, age, personality , temperament, activity level, compatibility with other dogs/cats/kids, etc. The welfare of the animal is first and foremost with RCR. Their goal is finding the best fit for both canine and human! The founder and volunteers of RCR hold fulltime professional careers, in addition to devoting many hours each week to caring for these rescued animals. There are never enough donations, so they also pay for many of the vet bills out of their own pockets. We were so impressed with the level of care RCR gives to its rescued animals and with the professionalism of the adoption process, that we adopted not only once through RCR, but 3 times.
