Long story short - I walked in for an impromptu mini-lesson in bellydance while strolling the Brentwood Corn Fest last year and walked out knowing I'd be back every week thereafter. And I actually have, which is amazing. Whether you're looking for an effective and FUN workout or serious bellydance training, you will find it here. For those of you who are looking to work out and not be bored with it, come out for the Sassy Pants Belly Dance Workout. You will work EVERYTHING and feel amazing after. Talia keeps the class fun and energetic, while making you totally comfortable and offering modified moves if you need it based on physical fitness level and things like injuries. If you aren't familiar with bellydance, that's ok, too. The moves in this class are simple, and she doesn't JUST use bellydance. She also likes to mix in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, zumba... When I first started the bellydance classes (my main focus) I couldn't hold my arms up in the base position for even half the class' duration. I decided to take the Sassy Pants Workout classes to help build my stamina and strength and now I can complete multiple classes in a row. I'm also losing weight and seeing MAJOR changes in my body. My first attempt to take dance lessons with my husband was less than desirable. I was asked to meet the dance instructor in a local shopping center to deliver my payment to hold a space. Later, I found out that the class is kept 'open' for students who decide to join in at the last minute. Further, the class could be canceled up to the last minute for lack of interest. I was surprising my husband with the lessons for our anniversary. We live in the next town, so with this policy, we would only find out about the cancelation upon our arrival. Not convenient, but we were given a full refund with the instructors regret. Thought I'd give the studio another chance so I called with questions about the belly dance class last Thursday. It is Tuesday night and nobody has bothered to return my call. I'm beginning to wonder if they are still in business. read more

Not a problem, everyone can work at their own pace while still being able to enjoy the class and Thalia's teachings. Let me start out by admitting that I have never been a dancer. I was told as a child that I should "find another hobby" and it left a lasting fear of embarrassing myself dancing. That said, a coworker of mine asked me to go with her to a Belly Dance class and, now in my 30s and willing to break out of my preconceived notions of what I "can" and "can't" do well, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and try it...why not?! Fast forward two years later.... I have been going to the Red Door Dance Studio on and off for the past two years and seriously, I LOVE it. Talia is one of the most amazing women I have ever met. She is a brilliant teacher.... Not only did I feel comfortable from day one... I felt included, encouraged and inspired. Lots of people can show you how to do something, but not many can actually create a true desire to learn and improve your skills while having FUN! I won't limit my praise to just Talia though... there is a core group of women who have been dancing there regularly for years and they are all equally supportive and encouraging. Fun aside, it is also a really, really great workout. I had to stop taking classes for several months and it was made very clear to me just how much these classes had improved my waistline! It works your core, your legs, your glutes, your arms... you use muscles you didn't even know you had. I'm not a big fan of "exercise"... if I go to the gym I end up making an excuse for myself and get off the treadmill around 20 mins in. With Talia's classes you are guaranteed an hour of exercise AND, best part, it goes fast and I enjoy it! Bottom line... I may not be the best dancer around...but I feel stronger and leaner and leave with a boost of energy every single time I take these classes. If you are reading this and thinking about trying out a class... just do it. You may end up a Belly Dance convert like me! read more

Last night a friend and I dropped in on the "Sassy Pants Belly dance Workout" with Thalia, and... I think I'm hooked. This was a great workout, including abs, arms, thighs, glutes, balancing. We started with a warm up and floor exercises and proceeded on to do a routine that was challenging enough to keep me literally on my toes, and fun enough to keep me interested. The best part for me was probably the music. I have no idea who the artist was for most of the class, but it all sounded good and made u feel like dancing. That is so important to me. If I don't like the music, I don't care how good the workout is, I won't go back. Oh, I do remember the final song of the evening - Brick House - yes, the Commodores - if that doesn't get your butt moving, nothing will. The studio is really cute and ladylike, with butterflies all over the place (I've got a thing for butterflies, so I knew this was meant to be). I was looking into belly dance classes in Pleasanton and Berkely, but Red Door says look no more. A really nice touch - they provide a hip scarf and yoga mat if you need one. And since we were "dropping in" we needed both. They also offer Zumba, yoga, ballroom dance, and a variety of belly dance instruction classes, and I've heard from a little birdie that they will soon be offering pole - but u didn't hear it from me. ;) This is exactly what we need way out here in the boondocks - a cute, friendly, neighborhood place where we can get our sexy on and get in shape at the same time - women, forever the multitaskers. Classes are actually affordable - $65 gets you a month of all you can take - and in a recession all I can say to that is WOOHOOOO!!! One more very important plus, Thalia was wonderful. She's a cute n' sassy diminutive 40 something (I would never tell her true age) in the best of shape who keeps you motivated from beginning to end. The only negative - she had the nerve to offer us chocolate treats at the end of class! LOL - what an oxymoron! As a dietitian specializing in weight management, I had to decline - can't imagine working up a sweat like that and then eating chocolate - at least not 2 minutes later AND with witnesses (hehehe). Anyway, I have nothing but love for Thalia and Red Door Dance. I have no doubt they'll be seeing me again. read more

I had heard a lot about Zumba but didn't want to get a gym membership just to be able to take a class, then I saw a class being held at Red Door Dance Studio and decided to give it a try. I was so glad I finally got off my butt and took a Zumba class from Claudia last week. It was honestly the most fun I've ever had working out. I am pretty uncoordinated, but she broke down the choreography for me until I could do arms and legs at the same time. I have never seen anyone with more energy. read more
