Am I a fan of word up? You bet you bleedin' socks I am!…read more While I am undoubtedly a fan of Word Up, it is definitely the memories and the great nights out I've had here that made me one and not what the club has to offer! The club has 4 rooms in total, Text which is more the bar or pre-drinks venue before venturing to a the Word Up dancefloor. Then there is the Cheesey Room, the 'Back Room' and the 'Front Room.' Excellently named I think you will agree. The Cheesey Room plays well, the best in cheese music this side of cheesevile! The back room plays host to some crackin 90's brit-pop and indie music while the front room plays your more generic dancefloor beats. Drink is reasonably priced and you can even get a good deal on student nights which are Thursdays and Sundays (£3 with matric card). Fridays and Saturdays are, understandably, mobbed so be sure to keep a keen eye out for your mates or you may loose them for the rest of the night! While it is not a great nightclub, you will certainly be guaranteed a good night out here with a big group of pals no matter which room you choose to dance the night away in!

Word Up, my God, what did you turn me into? I was young and innocent once (although you might not…read morebelieve that now) and you took me in your sticky alcohol soaked arms and showed me there was another path. I don't blame you for what I am, but I think my therapist does. Now we have to keep in mind that the first time I went to Word Up is over 10 years ago, underage, with my little sister (even more underage), accompanied by my aunt (barely of age), and smuggled in by her boyfriend and one his mates. I can't say anything about how easy it is to get in at 16 years old these days but back then if your skirt was short enough and your make up was thick enough anything was possible. Once inside it was cheap drinks galore, and girls, I wouldn't worry too much about the money, this place is pick-up central and there are plenty of men willing to buy you a drink if you know how to work it (I'm not easy, just economical). So back to my corruption...first time I got absolutely off-my-face pissed was here, first messy fondle and snog in public moment was here in front of anyone that cared to watch. The place has changed a lot since those days, it has been totally renovated and looks great inside, I couldn't even recognize it after it was completed, but mysteriously they never did anything to the back room which has always been my favorite, playing a good mix of indie rock and Brit pop. The other areas of the club play your usual generic night clubby type, but the DJs are fairly good. For someone who doesn't enjoy nightclubs all that much, but works in one every weekend, I quite enjoy Word Up, it holds a lot of memories, New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve have been spent here many a time. I did take off one star though, because I think I'm officially getting too old to go there, I mean it was scary last year. I went for X-mas Eve, and ended up going to the Cafe in Gourock before the curfew just so as not to be the oldest people in the room. I can nearly guarantee you that I'll be back to Word Up again, it's in my blood.

The Beacon is one of the newer venues on the scene. Originally built to provide a new home for the…read moream-dram Greenock Arts Guild, it quickly made a name for itself on the small-scale touring circuit and is now run by professional staff. It has a 500-seat main auditorium and a studio space and boasts stage facilities that quite a few main-scale theatres would be envious of. In fact, it's a shame that the main house only seats 500, as the stage is large enough to accommodate some fairly large gigs that would attract a large audience. The cafe/restaurant out front serves a very high standard of pre-theatre nosh too and offers great views over the Clyde. A nice place to sit with a coffee and gaze at the scenery.

I was given these tickets as part of my Christmas gift, and I was really excited that the night was finally here. The venue itself is set on the water, and in between various older buildings, so it kinda sticks out with it's modern feel to it, but it's still quite nice. We walked in and immediately to the right is their bistro which is a great place to come to for a meal during the day or for dinner and drinks at night. If we're ever back in the area, I'd like to stop in for a meal as there were a lot of great options to choose from on their menu and it smelled heavenly. There is a pretty big entry way where people can hang out during intermissions or before the shows. The toilets were bright and clean and easy to get to. The inside of the venue is great and we had really great seats. Four rows from the stage, dead centre. The only thing that was tough (and completely my fault) was needing to use to the toilet (too many pre-show drinks, ha!) during one of the opening shows. Being in the centre of the row of seats made for interrupting a bunch of people who didn't seem too thrilled about it. I was able to sit in a different row when I got back, for a few songs until the bad was done playing so I kept from interrupting any more people. All in all, the acoustics were great and the overall feeling of the venue was wonderful. Loads of seats and nice staff members to help you get to your seats. I would definitely come back for another show if we were to get tickets again.
