Pretty good locals market. Definitely cheaper than Zona sul, and you don't need a loyalty card for the lowest prices. Good selection of produce, juices, drinks. Lacking a fresh meat section, though they do have a lot of frozen meats. read more

All this for a very reasonable price, better than any possibility around this area and even competitive with regards to prices in suburban areas of Rio. I highly recommend this shop. They even offer a delivery service, although you need to buy more than 50 reais in Ipanema and 70 reais in Leblon to qualify for delivery. The box containing 67 peanut butter sweets (paçoca) is by far my favourite. I always need to have a one of those at home. They also sell the diet chocolate bar to make diet sweets, which costs a fortune elsewhere, even though it is not particularly cheap, it's definitely the cheapest in town.

Since hotel prices in Rio can vary from 'where you goin', baby?' to 'I saw you on the internet,' I…read moreadvise to rent an apartment. Oftentimes you'll have more space, more privacy and you'll feel like a local. The thing is, when renting an apartment, you need groceries. It's a good thing that right across the street from my apartment was the Super Mercado Zona Sul S/A. What the S/A stands for, I don't know. Am I a fan? Yes. Why? Because when I first walked through the door, I was offered a caipirinha! I am now a firm believer that all grocery shopping should be done whilst sipping a caipirinha (handed to you by a smoking hot hottie mchotterson; what is in the water in Rio??). Drink in hand, I was ready to go shopping. Despite being on a busy street in Ipanema (only blocks away from the beach and in a fun, well-heeled neighborhood), I found the prices to be fair. I also found an abundance of fruit juices. While the average Brazilian would, likely, gloss over this detail, this American fruit-a-holic was stoked to see so many new juices to guzzle. This isn't the largest of grocery stores but I found the selection to be more than adequate for my needs. The store is bright, clean and easily navigable. There are plenty of aisles and the options spanned the gamut from essentials to wants. So, juice, water, bread, fruit, sweets, milk, condiments, cereal, beer, and eggs in tow, I was ready to check out. My limited Portuguese was met with a smile and I was on my way.
