A slightly upscale supermarket in Rio it has most everything you would want from a supermarket. Very good selections of meats and cheese and many products. This is one of the smaller Zina Sul's compared to others, but good nonetheless. read more

Great selection of green veggies/fruit, meats and cheeses, kitchen wares, vodka, sodas, Havaianas...talk about one stop shopping! (Though I have to admit that prices were higher than other stores.) There's also a section near the front with a sushi counter, bakery and a cafe serving sandwiches and pizza along with other ready to eat items. Now can anyone tell me how to cut up a maracuja?

Then they have a lanchonete, with a selection of meals at the cafe (take-home sushi, sandwiches, tapiocas, etc) and a few bistro tables. They also have a bakery with a lot of beautiful pastries, cakes and delicious breads. Beyond that is the deli with fresh cut and cured meats and cheeses. They carry an impressive selection of wines and beers. They also have a seafood section and BBQ section and a huge array of spices. Pretty much anything you might need, you can find here. It's a very impressive, well kept store.

The selection is limited and regardless of the time of day, there are always long lines. Everyone is polite though, from staff to customers. The other day meu marido (how's that for a year of Portuguese lessons?!) dropped a bottle of beer and cut his leg. A lady in line offered him a tissue to clean up the cut. So if you're in need of staples like beer, eggs or bread, you'll be able to find it here. If you're looking for parchment paper or tipo 00 flour for pizza dough, I suggest you try another location.

All this for a very reasonable price, better than any possibility around this area and even competitive with regards to prices in suburban areas of Rio. I highly recommend this shop. The box containing 67 peanut butter sweets (paçoca) is by far my favourite. I always need to have a one of those at home. They also sell the diet chocolate bar to make diet sweets, which costs a fortune elsewhere, even though it is not particularly cheap, it's definitely the cheapest in town.

Oftentimes you'll have more space, more privacy and you'll feel like a local. The thing is, when renting an apartment, you need groceries. It's a good thing that right across the street from my apartment was the Super Mercado Zona Sul S/A. What the S/A stands for, I don't know. Am I a fan? Yes. Why? Because when I first walked through the door, I was offered a caipirinha! I am now a firm believer that all grocery shopping should be done whilst sipping a caipirinha (handed to you by a smoking hot hottie mchotterson; what is in the water in Rio??). Drink in hand, I was ready to go shopping. Despite being on a busy street in Ipanema (only blocks away from the beach and in a fun, well-heeled neighborhood), I found the prices to be fair. I also found an abundance of fruit juices. While the average Brazilian would, likely, gloss over this detail, this American fruit-a-holic was stoked to see so many new juices to guzzle. This isn't the largest of grocery stores but I found the selection to be more than adequate for my needs. The store is bright, clean and easily navigable. There are plenty of aisles and the options spanned the gamut from essentials to wants. So, juice, water, bread, fruit, sweets, milk, condiments, cereal, beer, and eggs in tow, I was ready to check out. My limited Portuguese was met with a smile and I was on my way.
