Mini-Wakan also borders the area commonly referred to as "the grade", which provides great shoreline fishing access. Mini-Wakan has an open picnic shelter available on a first come/first serve basis. Fundraising for a major upgrade of this park is underway. Mini-Wakan in many ways is a forgotten State Park as it's small, isolated, and limited to occasional picnics and boat launches. Plus the true fisherman are at the Grade down the road. When I drove in a few weeks ago, there was just a lone DNR truck and a lot of No Parking signs (?). However, it's very pretty up here and if you're so inclined the Iowa Great Lakes trail runs right outside the Park entrance and into Minnesota and beyond.

If you're looking for something outside the norm, check out the Scottish Links, the newest course at Brooks. The terrain is gorgeous and pretty different looking, with rolling hills and bent grass fairways. Personally, I like to hit a bucket of balls at the driving range rather than commit to 18 holes. :) I'm also fond of the red Brooks golf carts and a G&T at Bud's Pub after. FYI, Brooks is the only 4 1/2 Star Golf Digest rated course in the Lakes area. Brooks was also named one of the top 5 courses to play in Iowa by Golf Week Magazine. There is plenty of parking available outside. The restrooms are very nice and clean. We visited the bar that is open to the public (until 11) and were impressed with our time there. The staff was very friendly. There are high top tables, shorter tables, comfy chairs and t.v.s to watch any sports games that are on. We enjoyed the atmosphere here and will stop here the next time that we are in town too.
