I can't say a lot of good about Chase: they were going to start charging a lot for a checking account each month, I also found a lot of restrictions. Anyways, we bid farewell to Chase and decided to go for Regions as they had branches in Bristol, Kingsport Johnson City and Knoxville; our son is a student at UTK and the branch is just off campus. Overall impressions: feels small with a bigger footprint, very friendly, budget conscious, and an overall different feel than your "big banks." Instead, they nickel and dime everything and questioned every expense. The COA was 37k per year and we wanted funding for 2 years. They only wanted to lend 47k, far short of the 74k needed. My daughter told them a parking permit cost $800 and gave her a hard time about that. They did not want to cover food, either. They asked for receipts, bills, etc., which other lenders did not require. This was totally ridiculous. This credit union needs to take some serious customer service lessons. They made it so hard to apply for the college funding we needed. So we found another credit union that was so much more user-friendly, they approved us with a quick application process that was hassle-free, they used the official COA from the university, and without any additional questions or requirements. ECU is the worst - do not do business with them! Use any other credit union and you will be better off. Thank you, ECU, for the worst credit union experience ever.

I recently underwent a major personal milestone, investing in a completely new wardrobe across platforms like eBay and Mercari. Out of over 90 successful transactions, I encountered a handful of standard e-commerce issues--items lost in transit by the carrier, or rogue merchants refusing to issue a refund after tracking explicitly proved the merchandise was successfully returned to them. I also had several items that weren't as described and had gotten damaged in shipping. Instead of honoring my lawful consumer rights under federal law to dispute these unfulfilled transactions, ECU automatically flagged my account. I received a highly insulting letter claiming I was "negligent" and failing to secure my PIN number. This is a complete lie. My physical card and PIN have never been compromised. When a manager called to discuss the letter, she completely gaslighted the situation, ignored my documentation, and actually attempted to dictate my personal shopping habits, telling me I shouldn't buy items online. Every major national bank handles merchant non-delivery and returns seamlessly. ECU, however, chooses to blame the customer to avoid doing the manual back-end work required to hold shady merchants accountable. They are currently withholding hundreds of dollars in legitimate reimbursements for items I do not possess, while stripping away my debit card access under the false pretense of "negligence." They do not operate from a place of integrity or sovereignty. If you want an institution that protects your assets instead of lecturing you for merchant failures, go elsewhere. I am taking my business and assets to a national institution that actually understands consumer law.

Absolutely the most incompetent bank I've ever had the misfortune of doing business with. Every…read moresingle transaction I've made online with my bank card has been halted, as "fraud protection", and I've had to contact the bank to tell someone to let the transaction go through; even just to purchase a damn video game from steam or GOG. I have called customer service to request "fraud protection" be removed from my account because of this, and was told it cannot be removed, the transactions will still be denied, and I just won't receive any alerts about it. Their latest stunt, which cost them my business altogether, was to place a five day hold on my paycheck, because "it looks like a starter check", whatever the hell that means. These people are absolutely not competent to do monetary transactions. If you are considering opening an account with ACFCU, I recommend going literally anywhere else instead. Banks do not get any worse than ACFCU.
