My mother came here after her abdominal surgery so she could gain strength back before coming home. She was there for a little over a week and the care was excellent. The place itself is very lovely and presents itself well with beautiful grounds and buildings. Getting in as a visitor can be a challenge on a Saturday with the front gatehouse requiring each car to verify who they are visiting - the line can get a bit long. My sweet, funny, and loving mom experienced a devastating decline in her health while staying at this facility, and my efforts to get her the care she needed were ignored. During her stay, my mom had a sudden and significant change in mental status. I raised the alarm multiple times, explaining that she had a history of developing metabolic encephalopathy just before pneumonia set in. My concerns were dismissed -- at first, the staff simply told me, *"She's probably just depressed."* I was desperate for someone to listen. Finally, a compassionate nurse -- who wasn't even assigned to my mom -- said she would reach out to the doctors. But still, no one contacted me. I logged into the patient portal and sent a message pleading for help. The response I received from someone named Dan left me stunned: he wrote that it was their *policy* that doctors do not contact patients or family members on weekends. Its also worth mentioning that this was Memorial Day weekend so an additional day of waiting was added. This is not just a policy issue. It's a failure of compassion and common sense. My mom should have been sent to the hospital immediately. Instead, she was left to decline. By the time she was finally admitted to the hospital on Tuesday, it was too late. She passed away just one week and one day later from multifocal pneumonia. I can't stop staring at the screenshot where Dan coldly reiterates this policy -- as if it somehow justifies what happened. My mom, who was previously up, walking 200 feet, chatting and laughing -- her therapists knew her whole life story -- suddenly could not even stand. I have videos that show her sharp decline. Still, I was ignored. I want to make clear that the physical therapy staff was incredible, and the one nurse who went out of her way to advocate for my mom truly cared. But their compassion was not enough to overcome the indifference baked into this facility's policies. Dan, if you ever read this, I hope you learn to correspond to families with empathy -- not condescension. My mother was a beautiful human being who deserved to be treated with dignity and urgency. This facility needs to take a hard look at its policies and make real, immediate changes. Families should not have to beg to be heard. IF YOU'RE A DIABETIC YOUR LIFE MAY BE IN DANGER IF YOU GO THERE!! They have what they call a " carb controlled" diet. One night they gave my sister fettuccine Alfredo with a small piece of carrot cake for dessert! She was heavily medicated for pain, so couldn't look out for herself. They thought it was ok because the carrot cake was a smaller piece than the regular size. THEY THINK A GLUCOSE LEVEL OF 300 IS NO BIG DEAL. Sometimes no shots at all before or after meals. They'll use their "sliding scale" to judge insulin dose. Check their "sliding scale" values! If some tells you they will be right back, assume that means at least a 1/2 if at all! There were a COUPLE of very nice nurses/aides. Personally I think the place should be closed, but my guess is that other places are worse! ( but probably not for diabetics). Most people spoke English. Ps. Bridget, social services, was a life saver at discharge. We didn't know what to do next without her. read more

father was there for 9 months 1 month rehab , 8 months assisted living. from day one always short staffed, can't keep aides or recruit nurses, meds and dressing of wound care missed/not attended to. PCP of facility is not accessible, only use the NP as a PCP. horrible internet when addressed said nothing they could do. dining services out of basic food items quite frequently like coffee etc. this is private care which cost between $65k- $12000 a month. Absolutely disgraceful!!! I had stated no dairy and no gluten. I had an incident where he was given ensure with dairy in it for 3 days. My husband got very sick from it. Now today, Saturday September 2,I was visiting my husband when his lunch arrived and there was melted cheese on his corned beef. On the paper menu on the tray it is printed very distinctively no dairy and it even explains what products are considered dairy -- cheese being one of them!! Disgraceful! Disabled joint replacement surgical patient. Was supposed to be there 30 days. I packed up and left on day 8. LOST my insulin, failed to give proper treatment to a possible blood clot, bed not made, room or bathroom not cleaned until day 5, had to literally fight to be bathed, left to sit on toilet 20-30 minutes, screamed at by staff, PT scheduled during meal times, Ot barely scheduled at all, no communication for patients or between staff, staff over worked...doing 16 hour shifts, and so much more. Stay as far away from this place as possible! read more

My father was sent to Shannondell for rehab after a week in the hospital to regain his strength. What was promised, was not delivered. You will need to be there every day to make sure they are taking care of your family member. Showers were not given. Clothes not changed, meds given late, Patient calls unanswered, patients left unattended. Dan from admission is extremely rude when concerns are brought to his attention. The staff does not want you asking questions about progress and type of care being provided. Don't let the appearance cloud your perception of the care being provided. My mother went for rehab and came back with 3 bed sores. Although, pictures were sent to substantiate the claim. Of course the nurse director said she checked with the staff and they denied it. Wound care nurses and her primary physician all agreed that level of bed sore does not develop over night. The staff should have turned her and changed her every few hours. read more

My mother was here for three months. It's a very beautiful campus, and the facilities seem very modern. In general I would say that it was very nice, but at times there would be a story. For example, one day she summoned me there because she had not been given her medicine. They go room to room starting from one end of the hallway and make their way down. I understood that they were not supposed to do this and were supposed to start by giving the most critical people on the floor their medicine -- then they could work their way down the hallway. My mother was one of those critical people. On this night, my mom finally asked when she would be getting her medicine and was told that the person who distributed it had gone home and she would have to wait until the next day. I shouldn't have to get involved in something like that. It should be a part of basic care at a health care facility. She also described several times being wheeled somewhere and then left in a hallway or someplace. She kept saying that she was at the mercy of the staff. read more

The Rehab at Shannonndell is out and out dangerous. For a facility that has many older patients and patients with dementia, the rehab is entirely unequiped to handle the issues that arise with an aging patient recuperating from a health issue or surgery. They have no fall precautions available. They are incredibly under staffed. PT is supposed to be twice a day but it is often far less. Patients are left in their beds or sitting in a wheelchair all day everyday. Staff is overwhelmed and poorly equipped to handle situations. My loved one had 2 falls over the course of a few weeks both requiring hospitalization. Every issue raised is met with an excuse. Your love one will often be cited as the cause of the problem. read more

My father in law was sent to this facility for rehab after a brain bleed ( sub dural) left him with some deficits. I went to see him almost every day.One afternoon I walked in to his room and he was completely different- slumped over and could not communicate well. I went to the nurses station to ask what happened- no one noticed any change because "the same nurse is not on every day". (no report is given I assume). He was rushed to a nearby hospital and found to have had a stroke. since then he has recovered quite nicely at Moss Re-hab. I was a patient for almost four weeks. The staff was not attentive and caring. Normal everyday things such as a shower (needed help), change the sheets, fresh pitcher of water more than once a day are some of the issues I encountered. Food was not great. I have food allergies and had the nutritionist come twice and they never got it right. I picked this rehab because it was close to our home instead of Elkins Park. read more

I realize places are still short staffed but I can't give 5 stars. My Mother recently had a stay in Rehab. The building is very clean and presents well, with various plants outside, as well as nice maintained furniture inside. The food was good on most days but if you don't like an item it can be replaced by a list of pantry items always available. The day shift Nursing staff was very helpful and friendly. The reason why there are only 5 stars is the night shift staff was very short staffed. The one Nurse a Jamaican Lady, turned off the call bell and said she would alert the Aide that my mother needed help; but nobody came for over an hour. So Mom pushed the call bell once again and finally someone came. There were long waits for help during change of shift and nighttime. So even tho it is a nice place and the therapist was also helpful; I can only give 4 stars. I would hope after reading this review that they might hire more staff for night shift. Overall I would recommend this Rehab for anyone older in need of therapy. read more

Staff puts in too many hours or they are lazy and don't want to be bothered to help the patient. They are rude and nasty to my husband who has Parkinson's and tremors in both hands. They tell him this is not a hospital this is a rehab do things yourself. The floor of his room is dirty and he never has towels or wash cloths. And then when they roll their eyes They also yell at him I heard it on my cell phone at home when he called me. My husband put his tail between his legs and apologized to her in fear. read more

My husband was at this rehab for less than 24 hrs. He had suffered a major stroke and was unable to eat or communicate and was disconnected from all monitoring devices. He never ate a meal and could not press the nurse call button. I paid $585 for his stay and now received a pharmacy invoice ordered by Shannondell from a local pharmacy for an over the counter ointment for $13.07 which I could have purchased at the dollar store for $1.25. Beware of what nursing care provides. Make sure all medications are approved by you before allowing Shannondell to order anything! My husband passed away the day this OTC medication was ordered! This was a learning experience and I hope I can warn others of pitfalls in making decisions for loved ones when pressured by unforeseen circumstances. Be sure to ask questions! My grandmother was here about a year ago for rehab. I am very picky about somewhere she would be. The actual facility was clean and beautifully decorated. The staff couldn't have been nicer to my grandmother. She is sharp, and if something were off while we weren't around, ohhhhh would we know about it! My mother was at this rehab for 3 weeks. I shouldn't call it a rehab because the director, Dan Freed, turned out to be a covid nazi. I didn't mind wearing a mask but he would only allow two people a day to visit. You could not visit twice in one day because that would count for another visit. The patients were not allowed to eat with the other patients. If they were lucky enough to get their physical therapy 5 days a week, that was the only time they would be allowed to get out of their room. It was so sad, the depression on the floor broke my heart. The patients were so bored and lonely. Besides therapy, they didn't have anyone coming the rest of the 23 1/2 hours to get them up walking or even standing. How do you rehab if you don't get out of bed or chairs? I could not believe how much my mother atrophied during her "rehab" time. Our family thought we were going to the Hilton because the appearance of this rehab is over the top. Within the first week, I realized this place was a Travel Lodge with the employees overworked and unappreciated. I realized that very few employees smiled or seemed to like their jobs. I wrote Dan Freed when my mother said she wasn't even getting 15 minutes of PT and never daily, no OT at the time. Of course, his records showed 40 minutes which was absolutely false. I also wrote him because I finally realized my mother was there for a week and never had a shower. One night she was left on a bedpan for at least 15 minutes which cause pain to her broken hip and bad knee. The worst thing that happened to her is when she asked to go to the bathroom and the aide came and put her a bedpan under her. Not complaining that the bedpan didn't hit the right spot but my mother apologized to the aide and told her she was soaked. The aide replied that she wasn't and mom said yes I am. The aide threw the covers up on her and left. 3 or 4 hours late at 5 am, the aide came in and said, "you were right, you are all wet, let's get you dressed. So my mom was put in her street clothes so she wouldn't have to get changed again. The aide told her she was the only one on the floor and had 18 patients. How degrading is it to be disabled and so horribly mistreated! Dan Freed's reply to this was he was sorry but to call his next in charge. I was dismissed. I must say after I was done with the next in charge and the social worker that they jumped into action and went to see my mother. I never heard the consequences. I was up looking for assisted living homes in Hershey when I talked to my mom and she told me she couldn't take it any more. She had not left her roo for over 72 hours. No rehab scheduled for the weekend and it was cancelled one day due to sickness of an employee. So lonely, so sad and what made me even sadder is that most of the patients were feeling the same way. I must say that the majority of nurses and aides were wonderful but so overworked. They didn't have time to visit or take them out in their wheelchairs to breathe somewhere else. A few confided in me that they hated the way the rehab was run. Pre covid, the patients all had meals together and so many activities. They had two activities a week during mom's stay. On Monday evening it was called a manicure. I asked my mother what color she wanted and the sweet girl said, "I can only file." The other activity was Bingo on Wednesday for an hour. Not the fun bingo with a pen for the balls but a cheap kids game that showed the patients their worth. I think Dan Freed was hearing my complaints and sent a two sided paper of channel 98 that had all these programs and activities to do on the tv. Wow, that gives you so much socialization. After the I would rather be dead than in this place, I called the social worker. She said my mom couldn't get out until Tuesday, this was a week away. I reminded her that she was probably tired of hearing from me and amazingly enough, her release date was moved up to Thursday. We found the loveliest and nicest staff in Hershey. On my way out of the rehab, I decided I wanted to introduce myself and my mother to Dan Freed. I no longer called it Shannondell but named it "Shannonhell." I don't think he remember my name through the emails but I said I would just like to put a face to the woman that sat in her pee for over three hours and was stuck in her room for over three days with no therapy. So arrogant, he told us he was so happy my mom had recuperated so well. I asked him how he could say that and reminded him that it was not only my mother but the other patients were lonely and depressed. His comment was that he knew they were all so happy to be there and pretty much dismissed us and once again told my mother how happy he was that she had such a great stay. I left but not before telling him, I was not done. This is the first part, warning others of the management and the loneliness and boredom that occurs due to his rules. read more

The Rehab at Shannondell is beautiful and relatively new, and it's set on gorgeous grounds. However, looks can be deceiving! My loved one recently had a short-term stay here for rehab and she will never go back and I will never recommend this facility. The staff seems to enjoy telling the patients that they are "short staffed". I realize times are tough and it's hard to find employees right now, but management should try asking staff to not walk around telling everyone how short staffed they are. My aunt is thankfully able to advocate for herself (and had help from family) but I feel awful for anyone who cannot or doesn't feel comfortable doing so. She had to ask 3 times for them to take a stool sample to find out why she had diarrhea, and they lost the 1st sample so had to take another. After returning from a doctor appointment at which the doctor ordered blood work (and sent back a script which we handed the nurse at Shannondell), they either lost the script or didn't care enough to look for it. Thankfully I had a copy that I texted a photo of and the blood work was done, but ONLY because we pushed for it twice. These are just a couple of examples but we could not wait for her to get out of there. Please stay away - choose a rehab that may not be as physically pretty but that has good care. read more

My godmother was here for multiple weeks recovering from a fall. She received rehab care and was treated poorly by a specific aid every evening. The aid made her cry for days by rudely telling her she had to wipe herself when she was physically unable to do so. The nurses were decent and attentive to her. Flowers that friends and family sent were not brought up to her and left downstairs, even after repeated calls. Visiting hours were extremely short and only one visitor a day was allowed. Shannondell repeatedly called accusing my godmother to return a wheelchair she never took home. Never again will my godmother go back here. read more

I am presently staying at Shannondell rehab for recent joint replacement surgery.One star is too high.Day shift care is decent,but evening and weekends are terrible. They leave your for hours and hours with out your prescribed pain meds. Food is practically un-edible. How places like this are allowed to stay open is beyond me. I was a patient at Shannondell Rehab in August of 2021 following a hip replacement. I cannot give enough accolades about the care and attention I was given there. Everyone - from the nurses, aides, housekeeping, PT staff, office staff, EVERYONE - made me feel as though I was so very special and gave me the best of care that money could buy. Everyone went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and to assure that my recovery would be an easy one. It was. I was sent to Shannondell From Paoli Hospital after being treated for a fall. On arrival the phone for outside calls didn't work. There was no control for calling nurse or TV. Mother was moved here following 4 weeks of rehab at Bryn Mawr Rehab after having a stroke six weeks ago. What a contrast between the two facilities! Walking in to this place, there was evident lack of protocol. When my mother was checked in, no one came to speak to us for quite some time. When the nurse appeared, she acted over-stressed and defensive when we asked questions. My sister is a nurse and said the ratio of twenty patients to one nurse is not comforting. Also, a nurse left a dosage of pills for my mother to take but did not stay to see if she took them, which is something nurses are trained not to do. My mother also had swollen ankles and no one on the floor noticed this. My mother was in the rehab section of The Meadows for three and a half days without being visited by a doctor yet for an examination. This is definitely a big step down from Bryn Mawr Rehab. My father was transferred here on a Thursday night from the hospital after a fall. He declined quickly through the weekend to the point that my family and I took shifts being present throughout visiting hours b/c he was always left alone in his room by the staff. Staff seemed annoyed that their conversations were interrupted when asked for anything. By the following Monday, he was incoherent, running a fever and having violent tremors. After calling his doctor who confirmed "this is not normal", he had a 20 minute tremor at that evening. We called 911 and got him transferred back to the hospital. He was back to himself by the next day. I see some other reviewers saying that patients are being sedated on the weekends and I can't confirm that BUT something was definitely fishy. After another short hospital stay, he was transferred to a different rehab facility where he actually got PT and never had another tremor. Bottom line, do not send your loved one here! read more

I just recently had the pleasure of staying at the Rehab at Shannondell. I had a complete hip replacement and needed at stint at a rehab facility. My first and only thought was that it be at Shannondell. My stay there was a complete success. From Customer Service, to the nursing staff to the therapists to food services, Admissions to the welcoming Administration folks to the facility itself, it was such a pleasure to have the comforts of home. The meals were restaurant quality and provided a broad selection. I went through some tough bouts of pain, etc. and can't describe how warmth I felt from the caring staff at Shannondell. No request was too much. I was always made to feel that I was their priority. During the night when you're not feeling good it's reassuring to know that you can rely on the skilled nursing staff to monitor your vitals, meds, pain level, assistance getting into and out of bed and anything else you can think of. I also have to say that this was not my first encounter with Shannondell. About 7 1/2 years ago, my husband was involved in an horrific auto accident and was unable to use either leg because of multiple injuries. He spent about 2 months at Shannondell. The tremendous quality of care resulted in his being able to walk again. This was because he had such thoughtful, caring and innovative therapists and nursing staff. We cannot begin to express our gratitude and appreciation to all the Shannondell family for making us feel a part of them. Shannondell is truly the gold standard for rehabilitation. Giving this place two stars is a stretch. That's based on the way things look, but nothing else. This place is all smoke and mirrors. They talk a good game and put on a good show. They don't deliver. I'm a resident at Shannondell on the same campus. I visit several friends there and they are constantly complaining. They are understaffed with a constant turnover. Common complaints I'm hearing include extended wait time for help, poor quality food, cold food and apathy on part of some staffers. I've seen much of this first hand. Should I need assisted living, this option is OFF my list. The Meadows is a far cry from Shannondell. I feel for my two friends living there. The word is getting back to us here at Shannondell's independent living facility. Fortunately, things are still very good here, but should I need help, it would be nice to have a good assisted living option close to friends. Looks like that option is out. read more

My mom was in Shannondell's rehab facility for 2+ weeks and actually declined. They initially had the medications wrong (until I caught it) despite hospital documentation. Goals were totally inappropriate for her which they would have realized had they checked the hospital records and my conversations with staff upon her admittance. PT was not provided as frequently as I had been informed it would. I found the director Dan Freed to be cold and pompous beyond belief and lacking in any level of compassion and understanding. While he allowed me extended visiting hours to care for her, he refused her caregiver (who we privately employed) when I had to work. Like other facilities, they were understaffed and could not take the necessary time to feed my mom. Using our caregiver was the best case scenerio. Dan allowed her to arrive early on one day and then took away that option without any valid reasoning. Allowing our caregiver to arrive 4 hours earlier would have given my mom the opportunity to start two meals from 9 to 1 which I explained. She ended up losing a lot of weight and Dan did not respond to my last emails. I can not image how he retains his position. The facility is beautiful both inside and out but that's it. I could never in good faith recommend this facility unless its current management was replaced with those who actually care about their residents. read more

My father was in Shannondell twice--April of 2018 and January of 2019. His April stay was great! However, it seemed like they must have had some management changes after that first visit. On his second visit, my brother and I noticed when we visited that his room was not clean, his clothes were not clean. We got calls at least twice that he had scrapes on his arms because a transport person had steered his wheelchair too close to the chair rail in the hallways, and he got scraped up and bruised pretty badly. The big thing, though, is they lost his eyeglasses and WOULD NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THAT!!!!! Although my brother and I tore apart his room, and I went through every returned dinner tray on the wing that night, and the nurse made phone calls, no one in housekeeping, dining, or the administrative offices gave an actual "you know what" about his eyeglasses. We tried to talk to them, the failed to return calls, had the nerve to tell us we were wrong, and just didn't care. Oh, but they cared enough to keep sending me a bill for his tv and phone! And no, he didn't leave them anywhere because he was not ambulatory. His assisted living managers even tried calling--they didn't recognize him when he went back there because he didn't have his glasses--and Shannondell would not speak to them. Of course, they never informed the assisted living place my father was coming back, nor did they call my my brother or I to tell us he was being discharged. I believe they totally take advantage when they k ow the person is older, terminal, and doesn't have family/friend's who can be there every day. This summer, I did send Shannondell a copy of the bill for the replacement eyeglasses, and suggested they take their bill amount out of the eyeglasses total and send me a check for the balance, but that letter went unanswered and unacknowledged. My father died in March of this year, I know he is at peace, but I'm sorry he had to spend one of his last months here. read more

This is really a no star rating for Rehab at Shannondell but a star is required. My mother was a tenant in the independent community and went to rehab after hip surgery. It was a horrible experience from day one. She was over medicated causing hallucinations which stopped when I mentioned to the director that on Fridays she was coherent but on the weekends she could not hold a conversation and was seeing things. She was left in the same clothes for 5 days. She contracted Covid 19 while there as well. I was first told her test was negative only to be called again 3 hours later by a different person to tell me she was positive. They then denied that anyone made the first call. Finally when I moved her to an assisted living facility not associated with Shannondell she was found to have a partially healed bedsore upon her intake. When questioned about this the response was that it happed while her heel was bandaged and no on could see it. Complaints to administration received an "I'm sorry you didn't like your experience, we'll try harder next time ." Sorry there is no next time for you. If I left her there any longer they'd probably have killed her! read more

My husband has been at the rehab for almost 4 months. He had a major stroke. The room and board plus nursing care has been wonderful. He is in the skilled nursing. He is quite content with the care and positive staff attitude. I recently spent 3 weeks at The Meadows while recovering from a fractured hip and hip replacement surgery. I recommend this place very highly. There was one aide who worked the night shift who consistently made me feel uncomfortable. However, he was the single exception. Everyone else - doctors, nurses (especially Emily and Morgan), physical therapists (especially Lisa and Peggy), occupational therapists (especially Sandy and Julia), social workers, and administrative staff - were very helpful, caring, and professional. The food - other than breakfast - wasn't great, and so I lost 5 pounds while there. But if I ever again need a rehab facility, I hope The Meadows will have a bed available. read more
