My former attorney received payment for services that were not performed well. The last 4 times the case was heard, I never received an update. My case somehow fell off the docket and my attorney did absolutely nothing to get it back on after several conversations. This went on so long that my court appointed GAL tried to refund me because the case had received no follow up. Meanwhile, when I spoke to my attorney again, she blatantly asked me "Do you want to argue about what hasn't been done, or get to work?" I still had hope and was trying to make this happen a second time around. I guess I should've known better when she almost settled my first case for child support WITHOUT my consultation or permission. We had several continuances prior to that. I had no idea this was occurring, because communication was vague and I was told she would handle it when they did finally speak to me. I got notice directly from court this time stating if I didn't appear for the next hearing, they would automatically rule in favor of mom. After she commeneced going back and forth with mom and the state of IL., she told me what she was asking them to settle for (I never asked her to do that, neither was I advised of this plan prior to it happening). The only reason I was able to ascertain what was transpiring is because mom would not agree to the terms. I then was able to advocate through her but for myself meaning, even though she agreed the amount I was being sued for, I had to ask WHY did I need to pay ANYTHING seeing that I had proof of payment (this was submitted to the judge AND the state prior to hiring her, and then my attorney as well upon retaining her.) going all the way back to the childs D.O.B. The one thing she did do right was successfully advocate for mom to pay half of the fees since she lied and I'm in this jam because she wouldn't hold to her agreement. Since then, I've filed for a cease and desist of legal representation of any kind from Urban & Burt Ltd. I've requested documents via email, and no one has returned my calls or request. As if that's not enough, I was charge again for filing an appearance motion that she offered to do in front of the judge out of "kindness" after the judge discharged her from this case and also charged me to withdraw from the case. I started not to write this review, because in a different setting, I think I could have respected her as a person. I think she does have wisdom at times, however, she didn't perform her due diligence. Since, I've consulted several other attorneys, and they all said the same thing. After looking at the case notes, they feel I was misrepresented. The problem is I went all in to make sure my daughter has a father in her life, so I didn't mind paying, but I'm broke now. I've literally had to choose between paying my assessments for my home or paying Urban & Burt some times (guess who won). I tried to space out payments when I saw no work being done in hopes of motivating them to do something. Nothing happened with that either. This is really stressful and disheartening. I was a victim of his manipulation and he ended up swindling a large amount of money from me and he did absolutely nothing but prolong my case due his negligence. I hired Daniel after he assured me that he could guarantee a quick resolution to my pending case. Almost 3 months after I hired him, he still had not retrieved my file from my previous attorney. I found myself constantly calling, emailing and texting him for days before he would respond. I was constantly worrying and stressed because it became obvious that I had made a terrible decision in hiring him. A few days before my court date I was finally able to reach him and I asked him had he retrieved my file and he said "No". At that point I decided to just pickup my file and he had the audacity to ask me to drop it off to him. I informed him that I live about 45 minutes from his office and I didn't feel it was my responsibility to drop my file off since I paid him and he had almost 3 months to obtain it. I offered to overnight my file to him and he never responded. At this point I was extremely skeptical how he was handling my case, so I informed that I would be attending the scheduled court date with him. When I texted him the day before my court date to ask what time I should meet him and he informed me that he had to be at another courthouse about an hour away from the Daley Center and he would be about an hour late which let me know further that my case wasn't a priority. Right after he called to informed me that he was going to be late he called me back stating that he needed to reschedule my court date. I was extremely stressed out at the fact that he was not treating me with respect but instead he had manipulated me. After he was late to my first court date and missed my 2nd court date and still never obtained my file I decided to retain another lawyer. Soon after I requested a refund of my money since he knew that he took my money I was hoping he would do what was morally and ethically right. Instead he sent me a bogus statement filled with lies and bogus charges and a small refund which he called a "courtesy refund". He spent more time preparing this fake document than he spent on my case in the 3 months that I he was supposed to be representing me. Based on his character from this experience I knew that he would not admit to any wrongdoing nor admit to misleading me from the start. I hoping that my story helps someone and I am praying that the Illinois Bar Association find him unfit to practice law. If you're a person who likes control or is long-winded and isn't used to constructive feedback, consider this an opportunity to work on that because I actually quickly grew out of the experience. Cost-wise, pay the flat fee upfront and you will save $10K minimum easily and my situation was pretty straightforward and easy in comparison to most people.
