A definite must stop for the vinyl junkie when visiting London…read more Once upon a time record stores dotted the landscape on this side of the pond, but, as in the US, that is no longer the case. This store is a passion project and while physically it's not a huge location, browsing here you'll find loads of attractive vinyl, of both the 7" and 12" variety, all reasonably priced. You'll also find an owner (and I'm sure a staff, though I was fortunate enough on my visit to meet the owner Claudia) who is passionate about music and happy to chat with you about your favorite artists. She may even share some of hers as well. I have to say, she has great taste. Classic 60's soul (Al Green, Aretha, Motown and Stax), all are present here, as are so many other classic artists. The selection is primarily used, though there is plenty of new vinyl to be found, and while it skews on the Soul, R&B, and Reggae side, you will find Pop, Rock, as well as Dance and other genres represented. If you don't see what you're looking for, be sure to ask the staff. If it can be ordered, they'll be happy to do so. Brixton is lucky to have Pure Vinyl, and when I visit next I'd love to see more of this type of music outlet in London. Maybe even another location?

It offers a very high-standard service, as most of the products over a hundred pounds have a year, five-year, or lifetime guarantee, in addition to refunding any broken / damaged, or even unwanted purchases, out of goodwill. Overall, the store is a friendly, knowledgeable musical instrument business, that give a great service, in addition to selling high quality instruments of all kinds, from stringed to woodwind.

Left my group that I was with and took off to the other side of the city and found this place. It was perfect. Spent a bunch of time talking to the staff and some other patrons about punk in the US and the UK and got some great local recommendations from them (though wish someone had recommended Frank Turner to me then - I was practically on his doorstep and now I love him lol). It's got a wide selection of vinyl and CDs from bands you know and bands you don't and a deck in store if you are so inclined to "scratch". The staff are helpful but it can feel a little like you don't belong if you're not quite hip and trendy. That's always the case with these places though so you just have to tell yourself you are cool enough. If I need gig tickets I find this is a really good place to come, they've got all the gigs listed outside and it's easy to buy them for all the major venues in Norwich. This is what a record shop should be. The only problem is money, I don't have any and for that reason it's an utter tease. I go in for a single and I want to come out with my arms filled but I can't. Also kudos to the guy in there for being honest and saying it'd be cheaper and better to just buy a new record player from Cash Converters than to buy a new needle from him. He might have lost that sale but he gained this good review and my future business.

My friend Robert and I had to visit it while on a long layover in London. Despite its dilapidated state and small size, Rough Trade's undeniable charm was evident in every corner. It's a treasure trove for indie and obscure music! However, I must admit that the physical state of the store left me longing for more. It's not as impressive as the one in New York! They hold alot of instruments all of which are well presented instore. The staff are very knowledgable and willing to help with both beginner and professional musicians alike. The live music varies from okay to super. The wi-fi is free, and they sell cookies from a jar. Winner. The "hot rocks" are great fun, and have facilitated my posting onto Facebook such updates as "mat is now eating reindeer, poor rudolph", "mat had not heard of blesbok before, but is now apparently eating it", "mat is eating springbok, previously thought this was a type of running shoe", "mat cannot believe he is eating zebra, is this even legal?" etc. The fish and chips? Could this possibly be the very best melt-in-the-mouth battered fish in the whole of Cambridge? (Okay, probably not - but it's definitely up there with the best, and comes highly recommended!) The ambience and decor in the bar area is lovely: a toasty fire in winter, gorgeous sunlight in summer. It looks like something out of the 1920s. The music policy is gentle and centres around latin, big band, and vocal jazz. Service is consistently brilliant. The main dining area can get unpleasantly noisy in the evenings, and seems to attract the loudest groups of people ever. That's the problem with great places: they are so good they attract big groups of people. I am very lucky to have this wonderful pub in spitting distance from my partner's diggs in Cambridge and I'm always excited to go there for a quick wee dram at the end of an evening or a summer's lunch or a dinner out. Elvis, the manager, is hospitable, and one gets the impression he hasn't slept nor taken any time off work for the last 5 years. He's there constantly and it shows from the fact the service and food standards are consistently high. A true gem.
