Fave place for coffee or lunch in Drogheda (4/5 green stars)
There are a few good places to eat or have coffee in Drogheda these days (such as Salthouse, down on the Quay) but Relish has been my favorite for a few years. They make nice flat whites, their scones are great, and every lunch dish we've had here has been good too. I also like the feeling of the place - it's situated in the old Franciscan friary, next to the Highlanes gallery (free entry) that occupies the church. Apparently the Franciscan monks had been in Drogheda for 760 years before they left in 2000 and donated the church and friary to the town. Relish café has lots of light and staff members are always friendly.
I'm also giving them 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons:
* They have a reasonable number of vegetarian/vegan items on the menu but could do with a few more.
* For meat-eaters, all of the meat is Irish.
* They use free-range eggs.
* They say that they use "fresh and seasonal ingredients from local suppliers" but could be a bit more forthcoming with details. I wrote to them for more info but didn't hear back.
* For a few items they do name their sources. For example, Hegarty's cheddar, which is made in Cork using milk from their own small farm and vegetarian rennet.
That's about all I have - I'll try and pay more attention next time and pick up more info : ) Interested in writing green star reviews? If so, contact me! read more
