Overrated: another pub, another pint. Underrated: sitting inside and enjoying a cup of tea while the nice girl here makes half their menu on Gluten Free Bread to go, because YOU'RE GF AND STARVING IN IRELAND. This cozy little cafe has a whole menu of vegan, vegetarian, and GF options. I picked up some sandwiches on GF bread and it was similar to the drier, seed filled bread for sale in the states. The other ingredients were gread and the tomato relish was a tasty addition. Thanks for curbing my accellerating weight loss on this trip!

On our recent trip to Dublin, my partner and I were super excited to find that HappyFood was…read morelocated almost across the street from our hotel. Their food was fresh and delicious, and very reasonably priced. Tucked away down an alley (not completely unusual for Dublin), and sort of inside a yoga studio, HappyFood provides lunch during the day before the studio starts their classes. You order at the front counter and then they bring the food right to your table. The selection ranges from things like falafel wraps and burgers, to several fresh rice bowls. They mark everything on the menu very clearly with allergen symbols. What was a bit confusing to us, though, was actually how much non-veg options they normally have. We saw some notes about shellfish, but the days we were there, nothing on the menu appeared to be less the vegetarian. Nonetheless, the first time we went, I got the falafel wrap as a meal, meaning it came with a side of chips and a drink. The falafel itself was quite good, as well as all the trimmings inside. The second day, I opted for a bowl that had a delicious corn slaw and sweet potatoes (very delicious and hearty). Would recommend to anyone looking for a healthy-ish lunch, even if they're not exclusively vegetarian or vegan.

Wow. Really really loved this place…read more It's definitely a funny feeling sleuthing down a dodgy back alley looking for 'HappyFood'. Really like if you were to ask directions back there, on a rainy day, you'd probably look like you were tripping! It's such a great name though because the Yoga Hub is like a little happy place oasis back there. They've got a lovely little seating area out front, and the inside is all bright white and colours. With the food being located inside a yoga studio, it maybe isn't somewhere you'd totally hang around, although they have a lot of seating inside too if you wanted to, but I just got takeaway. It only took five mins to put together, and was wrapped up all nice for me in no time. 7 euro got me a vegan burger inside a wholemeal wrap with guacamole and a beetroot and red cabbage side salad. It was so filling, extremely tasty, and just felt full of goodness. I was delighted with myself afterwards so I was!

Fortunately, it turned out there was ample to choose from, including Sova Vegan Butcher (a quick walk from our hotel, near the Iveagh Gardens). Sova Vegan Butcher is a slightly higher dining experience than most of what you'll find in Dublin. This doesn't mean that you need to get too dressy, but rather that the presentation is a higher game (and dishes are a little higher in cost). We made reservations when we first arrived on recommendation from a couple sources we looked into. Our last day in Dublin, we headed to the restaurant and were seated on the second floor. Their space is about average size for Dublin, and they were busy but with pretty regular turn over in tables. Seeing a caesar salad was available, I of course had to try that as one of our shared dishes. We also got the soya schnitzels, and the split pea soup for a starter. The soup was good, but about your standard flavor profile. However, the caesar salad was excellent. It had a really large portion of avocado, tempeh rounds, and a good rendition on the dressing. The soya schnitzels were quite good as well. They were served with a duchess potato and delicious tartare sauce. While we were quite full from all of this, we decided to treat ourselves to dessert (it being our last night out in Dublin). That night, the dessert was a cheesecake with strawberries and blueberries, served in a cute mason jar. It wasn't the best cheesecake I've had, but I appreciated the presentation that went into it. Would definitely recommend Sova for someone traveling through Dublin, especially if you're getting tired of some of the standard (burger-type) vegan fare you'll often find elsewhere.

Fave place for coffee or lunch in Drogheda (4/5 green stars)…read moreThere are a few good places to eat or have coffee in Drogheda these days (such as Salthouse, down on the Quay) but Relish has been my favorite for a few years. They make nice flat whites, their scones are great, and every lunch dish we've had here has been good too. I also like the feeling of the place - it's situated in the old Franciscan friary, next to the Highlanes gallery (free entry) that occupies the church. Apparently the Franciscan monks had been in Drogheda for 760 years before they left in 2000 and donated the church and friary to the town. Relish café has lots of light and staff members are always friendly. I'm also giving them 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * They have a reasonable number of vegetarian/vegan items on the menu but could do with a few more. * For meat-eaters, all of the meat is Irish. * They use free-range eggs. * They say that they use "fresh and seasonal ingredients from local suppliers" but could be a bit more forthcoming with details. I wrote to them for more info but didn't hear back. * For a few items they do name their sources. For example, Hegarty's cheddar, which is made in Cork using milk from their own small farm and vegetarian rennet. That's about all I have - I'll try and pay more attention next time and pick up more info : ) Interested in writing green star reviews? If so, contact me!
