Then, I discovered Frederic's establishment. The actual bike shop is just around the corner on the Binnen Brouwersstraat. It is here that you can choose a rental bike or just leave your own to be repaired by one of the skilled employees. The selection is quite vast and rates economical, not to mention that if you are a tourist, you could also arm yourself with a bike map. I have never had to leave my bike here for extended periods of time as they always fix it up quite soon. On the rental side, the selection isn't good for off-normal sizes, but that is somewhat expected throughout the city, at least without paying a lot of money. My only complaint is that the hours are somewhat unfriendly for people who live and work in the city, as it is almost impossible to get service outside of office hours.

The employees ensure that the bike frame and seat height fits and that we know how to use the locking mechanism before we get sent out. Workcycles are two things: manufacturers of some of the finest city bikes in the world and providers of probably the best service I've ever received from a bike shop. You can find more detail on their immaculately constructed, top-quality yet competitively priced bikes elsewhere on the Internet, but broadly speaking their ethos is one of all-weather bikes that remain reliable and highly practical whilst requiring very little maintenance. I've had a Workcycles Double Tube Transport for four years now, and its reliability and rugged nature has been a boon to my efforts to traverse London purely by bike. My previous bike seemed to require near constant maintenance. My Double Tube Transport is typically serviced just once a year despite having spent most of its life outside and hauling me and all my stuff approximately 10,000 miles over those four years. Their service is extraordinary too. My bike suffered a bent fork in a crash (I was fine). I took photos and posted them on Workcycles' Facebook site late that evening. Within minutes Henry, the owner, was posting his professional assessment of my forks and suggesting how they could be replaced. Just incredible. Six weeks later, my bike was back on the road. So inevitably I wanted to pay a visit when there for a weekend, partly to hire bikes to see Amsterdam but also partly to see the shop itself. I wasn't disappointed. I was able to meet Henry, who gave us a good deal on the hire bikes. I also enjoyed more of the same service first-hand: I needed a new bell for my bike, and one of the staff there, Dylan, gave me helpful and honest advice as to my options. So few bike shops in London have this knowledge or willingness to look over after customers, so this approach is really welcome. Overall, just fantastic. There are very good reasons why Workcycles won Timeout's Best Bike Shop award in Amsterdam in 2010 and were nominated again in 2011.

There were people riding bikes everywhere, there were many more bikes than cars. Almost to the point of being dangerous. We found a parking garage near the bike rentals and opted to rent bikes. The bike rental was $7.50 per hour or $11.50 for three hours, they also provide locks. The bikes are 3 speed cruiser style with front and rear brakes on the handles. We held the bikes with a credit card and were on our way. Armed with a map, we set out on a biking adventure. We rode all over the immediate downtown area, even stopped for a beer while seated outside. After a few hours, we headed back to return the bikes and continue our journey. I would highly recommend parking the car and renting bikes. It is so much easier and this place made it simple. It is also in a great central location with garage parking nearby. Great experience!!

But I WAS surprised that in bike city no one came up with this idea erlier. I saved their number on my mobile phone despite my naive hope that I'll never have to call them. Shortly after I had to and I was thankful to hear that one of them was in the hood and I didn't have to wait too long. The guy came equipped with spare wheel, bike pump and toolset. The bike was quickly fixed and I don't remember what the service cost but I do remember that it is very good value for money and no extra urgency charge. So, I recommend everyone to save the number of DAFT to get quick hassle-free help in bike emergencies.

I emailed them over a holiday weekend, so it took a little while to get a response since we had to go back and forth a bit. Very convenient, but I had to wait an extra day since they couldn't meet me until after 11am. And even though I asked for the price ahead of time, they forgot to send it to me. Though, I think the cost was reasonable. I would just make sure you know the price before you go if it's not already on the price list. You can pay in cash or they will invoice you and you can transfer the funds that day. They have an app, but it's iOS only for now. :(
