This time we had coffee and a great apple pie (piece) sitting on the unique bleacher seats which are extremely comfortable. I decided to try Starbikes because of their location, operating hours and good online reviews, hoping they would offer the more convenient and typical three-speed bikes. I like simplicity and this place is filled with it. $8 euros to rent a bike for 3 hours which isn't bad. The location is convenient because it's right in the heart of the city by Central Station. Keep note that 24 hours here is just from open-close of the rental store not 24 hours from time of rental. The staff of course is pleasant. I appreciate the fact that the bike doesn't make you look like a tourist with a huge logo so you really feel like you fit in. They offer free refreshing water all day. You may think this is irrelevant, but when you're pedaling 96 miles an hour to return the bike before closing, water is very, very important! read more

Fun quirky way to rent a bike in Amsterdam, which seemingly is the primary mode of transportation here. Off the beaten path a little, but that's part of the fun. The shop is a little place with a barebones cafe in the front, selling coffee (Starbikes, get it?) and little sandwiches. Seems like true local hangout. This is a strange combination when you consider that at the same counter you order your coffee you can also order a bike. Beyond the front of the shop in the back is a large room full of the classic, slightly beat up black bikes that are all over Amsterdam. No gears here, but since the city is almost all flat, it's really a non issue. Those not used to the sit-up-straight large seat "granny" bikes might have some trouble handling these bikes. Braking is done by pedaling backwards, and I suggest you spend some time practicing in front of the shop. Also, they will give you a primer on the lock system (which is unique, seemingly to Dutch bikes) and is extremely important, bike theft is rampant here. If you want to try to blend in with the Dutch while checking out some of the sights via the local mode of transport, Starbikes will set you up with a solid bike that blends in and doesn't scream "tourist" with the bright red color of Mac Bikes. Normally, I never write any reviews, but this time it was something truly special. I started to smell something fishy when we first arrived to the shop. They took my girlfriend's government issued ID (later I found this is ILLEGAL). Then they ALSO demanded €200 deposit. Logically thinking, you either take an ID OR a deposit, but both? That makes very little sense. So we gave them the ID, and were ready to pay a €200 deposit. There were 3 employees in the shop: a young mechanic (SPOILER: he's the only polite person there), a lady and an older guy. They told us they are unable to charge €200 deposit from a normal Dutch Maestro card (which is fine and understandable). So they said that they require some credit card. Okay. I presented the older guy with my Dutch Bunq Travel Credit Mastercard card. It's indeed a credit card, which could be used worldwide. It has a nice and very visible "CREDIT" word on it. Good to go? Well, not so fast. When I presented my credit card and told the older guy, that this card is definitely could be used for operations like that, he went into the passive aggressive mode immediately. Instead of just doing his job, he told me something like "Don't tell me what we can and can't do". He was not yelling, he was quite quite, but, boy... the attitude was horrible. I didn't expect an attitude like that towards a valuable customer. And I was pissed off immediately as well. So we started arguing, and instead of being smarter than me, let me to cool down a bit and handle things nicely, he just went on and on. My anxiety was increasing every single second. DISCLAIMER: I'm probably not just a regular customer, who doesn't care about things being told to me. Things like that can get me off easily. I'm easy to piss off and hard to cool down. At this point, I already suspected, that this place will most likely not work for us. But we needed the tricycle, and we were already slightly behind the schedule, so we decided to give it a try. What could possibly go wrong? Well, a lot of things. We were presented our (4) bikes, and the looks of every single one of them was... awful. Check the photos attached. This is truly something. They were all covered in scratches. One bike had slightly buckled rear wheel, so I requested another one immediately. Some other bike had a bicycle bell for kids (this bell was quite cute though). The tricycle's rear right wheel was louse, but we couldn't request to replace it, since they only had one in stock. During the trip, we found no big problems, other than some bell not working and the tricycle's saddle post cannot be adjusted (it just lowers itself slowly until the rider is in the lowest position), since the bolt used to hold it in place is louse and simply unusable. Generally, all three "oma"-bikes, although looking horrible (nice thing to prevent them from being stolen though) performed well. The saddles stayed in place, and there were no problems with sturdiness. There is no doubt, that technical staff are performing routine maintenance on these. They were quite safe and easy to ride, if you don't mind to look ridiculous. We didn't. So, all in all, sturdiness was on a good level. The pricing is awful though. We paid €13 for 2 days rent for each "oma"-bike and hefty €18 for the tricycle. This is roughly twice the price compared to OV-fiets for example. Judging by the condition of bikes this place rents, in all honesty, I couldn't say the pricing is fair and justified. It's certainly not. The shop is located in close proximity to the Amsterdam Central Station, so I suspect the business model of this place is quite straightforward: rip-off the tourists, since they usually don't demand quality stuff. We rented bikes at 9:00 on Saturday. For 2 days. We got them back at 8:45 on Monday. 2 days, right? Well, seems like they have their own definition of a "day". They expected bikes before 19:00 on Sunday. I was arguing that a day is 24 hours, but they still charged us €22.5 more. With this "I don't care" attitude, again. At this time I was already exhausted, so I just gave up and surrendered my money. By the way, they still didn't release my €200 deposit. I mentioned to them that I'll most likely leave a negative review of this experience on every review platform I could find, but they were not at all impressed by this prospect, just telling me "Go ahead, we already have GREAT reviews!". Well, maybe not for long. read more

I rented from Starbikes for a number of reasons. For one, they offered one of the cheapest rates for a 24 hour rental in Amsterdam (though the insurance rate is a bit more expensive). They also rent out bikes that don't scream, "I'm a tourist! Look at my bright red (or green or yellow) bike with a huge logo printed on it!" Finally, they are open an hour later than all the other bike shops -- until 7pm -- which allows for a little extra time of bike riding, certainly a nice thing for those long summer days. The location is not ideal -- A good 5-10 minute walk from Central Station and not terribly close to anything, but it's a modest hassle since once you're on your bike, it's only 3 minutes until you are biking along the canals. The pick-up and drop-off experience were seamless, though the staff didn't seem to be too thrilled to be working there (they weren't mean but weren't exactly enthusiastic either). The bike I got worked just fine and the lock system was easy-to-use. The screw holding the handle bars in place did come loose, which got annoying (and sometimes seemingly dangerous) at some points of my ride. All in all, Starbikes was just fine. The reason I'm not giving more than 3 stars isn't because something went wrong, but rather because the place didn't exceed expectations in any way, shape, or form. read more

We rented bikes from Starbikes for an afternoon. The location is close to central station and the bikes are OK - one of the ones we rented had an issue with the brake while we were out. The bikes are maintained but seem older and show some wear from their years. While their bikes were OK, the service left something to be desired. They were unfriendly and made us feel like a bother to try a different size than the giant Dutch bikes they originally offered. My sense was that they really didn't care for foreign tourists - as we were leaving, we overheard the staff saying that tourist were really a danger to the local bicyclists. Was telling. We've rented from other places in Amsterdam. If you want somewhere close to central station, try Wheely Dutch Bikes instead. read more

This is the best place to get a bike in Amsterdam! It's a really cool business with a hip cafe and people hanging in the retro movie theater seats. The rental process was a breeze for us - to get a bike you just need to give your credit card number (many places ask for a cash deposit - no thanks). Rates are insanely cheap (6 euro/day - including night) for an incredibly decent bike with very secure lock. The bikes are cute and black so you can't even tell they are rentals (macbikes are red and say Macbike very clearly on them). They also have a useful and sturdy back rack (I even sat on one for a ride). Since Amsterdam doesn't have a cheap/quick public transit system - this is your transit! Whether wheelchair-bound or unable to walk they have the transportation that suits you and their rates are unbeatable. Pedal to electric they have it. It is very friendly, and the owner Linda, welcomes regulars with warmth and sets aside the best bikes. The hire bikes are in very good condition and mostly brand new. Great prices, conveniently located near Central Station. This has a lovely family-owned vibe, and the shop is also a café, so you can grab an espresso while you're there! Star bikes was the cheapest bike rental we found for 24 hours. One of our bikes was rather old, the other appeared newer and they were both back petal brakes. One was silver, the other black so we didn't have the bright "I'm renting a bike" sign stuck to our backs. We did get a flat, but its hard to tell if that was our fault or older equipment. He showed us some cool spots to go. There is option to get insurance for the bikes because police takes the bikes if parked illegally.
