    My rental bike in Amsterdam
    Jana P.

I like simplicity and this place is filled with it. $8 euros to rent a bike for 3 hours which isn't bad. The location is convenient because it's right in the heart of the city by Central Station. Keep note that 24 hours here is just from open-close of the rental store not 24 hours from time of rental. The staff of course is pleasant. I appreciate the fact that the bike doesn't make you look like a tourist with a huge logo so you really feel like you fit in. They offer free refreshing water all day. You may think this is irrelevant, but when you're pedaling 96 miles an hour to return the bike before closing, water is very, very important!

Fun quirky way to rent a bike in Amsterdam, which seemingly is the primary mode of transportation here. Off the beaten path a little, but that's part of the fun. The shop is a little place with a barebones cafe in the front, selling coffee (Starbikes, get it?) and little sandwiches. Seems like true local hangout. This is a strange combination when you consider that at the same counter you order your coffee you can also order a bike. Beyond the front of the shop in the back is a large room full of the classic, slightly beat up black bikes that are all over Amsterdam. No gears here, but since the city is almost all flat, it's really a non issue. Those not used to the sit-up-straight large seat "granny" bikes might have some trouble handling these bikes. Braking is done by pedaling backwards, and I suggest you spend some time practicing in front of the shop. Also, they will give you a primer on the lock system (which is unique, seemingly to Dutch bikes) and is extremely important, bike theft is rampant here. If you want to try to blend in with the Dutch while checking out some of the sights via the local mode of transport, Starbikes will set you up with a solid bike that blends in and doesn't scream "tourist" with the bright red color of Mac Bikes. Oh, and the prices are some of the best too.

Everything about this tiny cafe is whimsical and a bit dreamy. If Dutch faeries sipped afternoon…read moreorganic tea, I'd expect to find them here. Which makes me wonder... do faeries claim nationalities? I hope not. There's a minuscule indoor seating area, but come spring and summer - as long as it's not raining - you'll want to move on back to the very leafy and verdant outdoor terrace. If you're lucky, the one table that gives you rain protection but is still technically outdoors will be available. I was lucky. And it did sprinkle while I was there. I can't speak to the food. I only had fresh mint tea, served with honey and a teensy cookie. Let me tell ya... it was the day after Amsterdam's hottest day in recorded history and the entire city was just tuckered out. Feeble even. That's why I asked for ice and made my hot tea into an iced mint tea. Re-freshing! The menu offerings are limited but apparently satisfying judging from my dining companions' happy faces. The two women caring for us were terrific about setting the friendly tone. Recommend exploring around this charming spot on Utrechtsestraat for clothing and specialty shops and other highly rated eateries, including some Michelin-rated.
