I wanted to take a moment to leave a review for Reparations Club. I first heard about Turtle Island: Foods and Traditions of the Indigenous Peoples of North America on NPR and wanted to grab it as a birthday gift for a friend. I'm big on shopping local, so when I saw it was available here, I immediately placed a pickup order. They offered beautiful gift wrapping, with sustainable, eco-friendly packaging, which made the whole experience feel extra thoughtful and special. When I went in to pick it up, I ended up finding Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin, with an introduction by Roxane Gay, who I absolutely love, so of course I had to grab that too. The ambiance of the store is something else. It feels peaceful, energetic, and inspiring all at once. The music selection really sets the tone, and the staff are genuinely warm and welcoming. I'm a huge believer in shopping local. Every purchase is a small act of resistance against mass consumerism and extractive capitalism. If you have the option, choose local. Support Black-owned businesses. Always read more

This is a book store you must check out in LA!! There is a teeny tiny parking lot but most people park on the street in the neighborhood. There was a line when I got there and we had to wait to be let in. I was both confused and surprised by that but learned why once I got inside. I was there on a day there happened to be a book signing and meet and greet with author Nedra Glover Tawwab for her newest book, The Balancing Act! That was really cool to witness. I was here on a Saturday afternoon and it was busy! The space is beautiful! I love the art and the colors and the way it's all organized. Staff were incredibly kind and helpful. There were so many books to choose from but I ultimately landed on a title I've been eyeing for a few years: My Sister, The Serial Killer. There's a puzzle area where you can contribute and put a few pieces in place. There's staff is always welcoming and helpful. You can definitely get great value for your money here. I need everyone to stand up and pay attention real quick, because The Reparations Club is that place!! This is not just a bookstore. It's a community space, a cultural gem, and honestly one of the best vibes I've experienced in LA in a long time. Black-owned, woman-owned, LGBTQ+ affirminggg, and genuinely welcoming in a way that feels natural, not performative. The book selection is unreal. Books by Black authors across every genre, plus Latin, Caribbean, and LA voices that feel deeply intentional and thoughtfully curated. This is the kind of place where you come in "just to browse" and somehow walk out with a stack you're already emotionally attached to. What really sets this spot apart is the way they build community. Twice a month they host these silent but together reading sessions, where a whole group of people come in, grab a seat, and just read quietly alongside each other. No pressure, no awkwardness, just calm collective energy. Sometimes there are guest authors. Sometimes there's live music during a break. It feels grounding in a way that's hard to explain until you're there. And starting January 2026, they're launching a monthly book club, which feels like the most obvious next step because this space already feels like home for readers. Parking is street parking only, but depending on the time of day, it's really not bad. Seriously worth it for the visit! The staff deserves their own paragraph. Warm, kind, actually engaged, and happy to talk books without being weird about it. No gatekeeping. No attitude. Just good people who clearly care about what they're building. As Toni Morrison said, "If there's a book you want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." This place feels like it exists to protect those stories and the people who carry them. Bottom line: go. Linger. Read. Come back again. Bring a friend. I'm an avid reader, and while in LA for a short trip, visiting this bookstore was non-negotiable. I found out about it through TikTok and instantly knew I had to experience it in person. As a Black woman, stepping into a Black woman-owned store that is beautifully curated and rooted in community was incredibly special. I fell in love immediately. The space is stunning and intentional, with books I've not seen elsewhere, signed and exclusive titles, art, and vinyl. The staff were warm and welcoming. They offered help but didn't hover, which made it easy to take my time and soak it in. I left with three books I'm truly excited about, including one I couldn't find anywhereee back in Vegas. This is easily the best bookstore I've been to. I added so many titles to my TBR just from browsing and have already told all my bookish friends about it. If I lived in LA, I'd be a regular, especially after seeing that they host reading nights and other cool events. They also offer online ordering, which I will be using. Overdue review. I love this book store! I came once for "read the room" which is a monthly book club they do. But you read whatever you want alone, together. It was super chill and cozy, and they had snacks. Tickets are sliding scale so affordable for everyone. I also did a large order with them as well, of about 10 books. I had PD budget from work and thought it would be better spent with them than the big online retailer. Even books they don't carry, they can get them for you. They responded to my order request quickly. They offered to ship to me or do an in store pick up. They're also a good source for new releases from black authors writing in any subject, and the classics. They have a tiny lot next to their building but I always find free street parking on the block. read more

Finally made it to Reparations Club! The neon door leads you to absolute magic! Beautifully curated books and items celebrating black brilliance. The colorful decor includes comfy couches to lose yourself in a book. I got to experience a reading by Tourmaline and sit in the corner couches making it an intimate experience. What a beautiful space! This is truly a lovely bookstore that invites you in to stay a while. There's comfortable seating and walls of books primarily by BIPOC authors and vinyl records. They have a wide variety of genres including fiction, non-fiction, children's, YA, self-help and cookbooks. I love that there was a section that had stacks of recommendations from employees. And also throughout the store there were copies that also had employee recommendation notes as well. I felt welcomed and loved the selection that they had to offer. I saw multiple books I had already enjoyed as well as many that are on my to-read list. I had no issue finding parking on the street and look forward to returning. read more

I absolutely loved this bookstore. So diverse and so interesting. It's hidden in an area where I wouldn't expect such a treasure. This place is inclusive - they have books by latino, asian, indigenous, lgbtq and spiritual (of color) authors in addition to black authors. I also like the ambiance of the store. The people working there were very nice. It made me realize that the black owned bookstore near me is quite conservative. They do have books from people of other ethnicities (not early as many) and haven't been as inclusive of lgbtq books. I'm glad that I came here and honestly, can see myself ordering books from them. I went in expecting to peruse a store and walked away with three books. I didn't expect that, but I'm glad that it happened. read more

I've been eyeing this bookstore for quite some time and I'm so so happy that I finally made the drive over. Rep Club is a black and woman owned independent bookstore that has so much thought and intention behind their space. It's evident in their wide selection of inclusive and diverse books, art, music, and unique gift items. I picked up Act Your Age by Talia Hibbert because I really enjoyed her other book from the series. I'm also a huge fan of Bell Hooks ('About Love'!) so I picked up Communion. Lastly, after practicing some self control, I picked up my third and final purchase of the day, a vegan cookbook! So excited to dive into my reads. Can't wait for my next visit! read more

I really wanted to love this store, but I refuse to support performative and disingenuous pro-blackness. I came in with another BW friend of mine and we were virtually ignored, but the lighter toned and interracial couples that came in around the same time received exceptional care. As if that's not bad enough when I returned home I received a message from a friend of the owners ON A DATING APP reportedly checking me for the review that I left? Of course this woman was biracial. This city is crawling with weirdos who seem to genuinely believe that lighter skin and/or ambiguity makes them better than other black people. It is absolutely disgraceful that they acted this way while running a store with the contents, message and name that this one has. How can you pretend to be pro-black while feeding into colorism, xenophobia and further division in the black community? What an absolute ancestral embarrassment. Come visit the best bookstore in the world! I grew up in the area and it's so refreshing to have a black female-owned bookstore for the community that is a safe space for LGBTQ+ folks. Unlike other bookstores that just carry LGBTQ+ books, they use their money to help support the LGBTQ+ community. Even if you live out of state, I highly recommend ordering from Rep Club to make sure we can keep it around as long as possible. Lord knows the community there needs it. If I'm ever at a bookstore that happens to be white-owned, I always capture the title of the book I'm interested in buying and order it from Rep Club instead. Reparations Club is a great Black Owned space and book store in Los Angeles. They have the most amazing collection of books by Black authors for kids and adults. They also have readings and evening meeting where you can learn how to assist the community and the world in general. They have a large space for people to read together and for discussion. You would want to give them a call if you are interested in the events more than the books. I believe the shop had to close down because of Covid, but give them a call, to find out when they will reopen. They also have a great website. read more

I'm so glad we had a chance to check out this amazing spot before leaving LA. Nestled on a quaint residential block, the doors open to a large room that is carefully designed to meet a number of needs. There's the large comfy area by the window where you can easily get lost in the pages of any of the many books they carry. The children's and young adult nook to the personal wellness area. When we arrived there was a full house including a pop up event to celebrate a local beer maker. The owners did not skip a beat with the ambiance or personal customer service. We were warmly greeted and my son throughly enjoyed his time and the selection. I grabbed 3 books this time and look forward to supporting more. If in LA or lucky to live there, Reparations Club should be on your MUST DO LIST. Parking: There is a small lot behind the store but ample street parking.
