Every expat in Berlin knows how hard it can be to find your footing in the city. It's the weather. The language. The bureaucracy. But every Wahlberliner ("Berliner by choice" auf Deutsch) who 1. bundles up in all black on gloomy winter days, 2. completes everyday errands without resorting to English, and 3. survives the Ausländerbehörde with a residence permit in hand knows that it's always an unexpected moment that truly makes you feel at home in Berlin. For me, it was the first time I instinctively muttered "Scheiße!" under my breath when all of the coins from my wallet fell to the floor when I was purchasing Laugenbrötchen from Alpenstück's in-house bakery one afternoon. Almost immediately, a German woman stood up from her table--momentarily abandoning a delicious-looking cake--to help me pick up all of those pesky one- and two-cent coins as a random act of kindness. (Who said Berliners were rude?) My time in Berlin has made me a bread snob. Maybe it's for the better, because every time I spot lye bread, I think of how my hankering for fresh Bavarian bread put an extra spring in my step after I left Alpenstück that afternoon. It might look like your typical place in Mitte (it's a modern, well-lit space with a subtle rustic touch). But maybe you'll leave Alpenstück with a better impression of Berlin... and some tasty bread. read more

This place was amazing. Charming interior, delicious pastries. We had this pastry that was filled with custard and covered with powdered sugar. I was hoping this was what the other yelper had recommended (wind cloud), but it doesn't matter because it was ridiculously delicious and what I would imagine a wind cloud would taste like, if such a thing existed. We also had the kasespatzle which is like a german version of macaroni and cheese, and it was delicious. Everything looked so good, and I am really sad that this place does not exist in Pasadena so that I can try it all! Maybe I just need to move to Berlin to accomplish my goal. BTW, there are bees everywhere which initially scared the crap out of me, but eventually I got used to it. If I was a bee, I would be in this store too. read more

After subsisting on nothing but sausage, schnitzel and beer during our visit to Berlin, the "Fitness Breakfast" at Bäckerei Alpenstueck was a welcome departure. A muesli with delicious strawberries and toast with some sort of light, whipped scallion cream-cheese esque thing, it had us feeling a little less disgusting by the time we left. This cute, friendly little spot is also where we discovered that fruit is just so much better in Europe. The strawberries may be smaller, but they tasted like actual fruit rather than water. I don't understand the appeal of this place. The smoked duck appetizer is good. The wiener schnitzel was okay. The wild boar leg was horrible and I couldn't even finish. Couldn't get the gaming taste out of my mouth. The apple strudel was meh. Service was mediocre. The decor is definitely pleasant, but the area it's in is so quiet, it's almost scary. Would I go back? The price didn't bother me but I actually had better schnitzel and fish at places nearby for 50-75% of the price here. Mind you, those places were less fancy but the food was every bit as good or better. I found the monkfish to be oversalted here. The schnitzel was a bit cooked too well for my taste. Spare, modern space a bit off the beaten path. The waitstaff were very nice and professional. Everything is made on site. The home made bread was excellent. Wines by the glass were good and reasonably priced. I had the Swabian veal ravioli as an appetizer. They were excellent. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the filling was flavorful and it was served with a sort of warm onion compote and a salad. Main courses were very good, overall. My wife loved her kasespaetzle. I had the wiener scnitzel, which was very good (and superior to the iteration of it that I had in Vienna). My daughter ordered monkfish and didn't love it- the flavor profile was off for her. Excellent and fairly stylish German restaurant in Mitte, just around the corner from Nordbanhof. The menu is not extensive, 4 starters and 5 mains to choose from, consisting of various German classics - some of which you will have heard of, and others you may not. I opted for the cheek of pork with bulgar wheat to start, and followed it up with an excellent rabbit dish, all washed down with a decent dry riesling. Starters are priced at EUR6-8, and mains at EUR14-17, and for the quality of the food, it's reasonable. Service could be a little better, so I'll save that 5th star for a repeat visit. read more

My boyfriend wanted to take me to a Michelin Star restaurant for my birthday, and we also wanted to try some "fancy" German food. So, Alpenstueck it was. It was asparagus season, so that was a common thread throughout our meal. We had the veal ravioli (freaking delicious) and the asparagus soup (pretty good) as appetizers. He had the wiener schnitzel with white asparagus (very, very good) and I had the fish special with asparagus risotto (very good, not amazing) as entrees. We had the apple strudel with vanilla ice cream (tasty, not spectacular) for dessert. Although it was quite expensive, the portions were fairly large. We drank local wine and beer as well, which was very good and well-priced. In the end, between very solid food, a lovely atmosphere, and adequate service (which makes it a standout as far as Berlin service goes), I give it an overall rating of 4. read more

After reading the reviews about Alpenstueck and walking past lots of other German restaurants, we decided to give it a try and I have to say the reviews were correct. This place has a refined charm to it however once inside, the ambiance is laid back and the service is excellent. It was easily the best schnitzel I've had in Berlin. The dish came with a crisp and tender schnitzel with potatoes and was just the perfect size. Me and my Son both had the same thing. The interior is modern yet warm with two main areas separated by the entrance. They were very accommodating to our seating request and speak English very well. The tables are comfortable and the lighting is perfect. I look forward to going back and experiencing their other dishes in the future. read more

Ever had a free continental breakfast at a discount hotel? Same thing here but it's 30 Euro. A complete disappointment. While the décor is trendy, the staff is scattered, the food is below mediocre, and the prices are ridiculously high. My girlfriend and I ordered breakfast (Alpenfrühstück 1 & 3) and coffee at about 10:00 AM on a Saturday. Not busy. The server brought bread and nothing else (no butter, no jam, no coffee) and disappeared for 10 minutes. The sliced bread and rolls were at least a day old - felt store-bought. When she showed up with breakfast it was a few slices of thin ham, 8 slices of salami, 4 cheese slices, about a tablespoon of quark, half an apple, 1/3 of a kiwi and 1 section of orange. The fruit was dried out like it had been cut the night before and left sitting. That was 8.90 Euro. For the above with an extra tablespoon of goat cheese and 4 more slices of hard cheese, that's 11.90 Euro Look: If the quality of the cheese or meat was spectacular, no problem. However, the quality of all the food was discount supermarket or worse. The cheese: bland. The meats: flavorless. It sucked. The server disappeared and never came back. We had to go to the bakery counter to get our bill (30 Euro - for above plus 2 coffees and one orange juice) and pay. Tipped accordingly. Owners need to wake up, this place is dying. read more

A really good restaurant that offers some great Austrian food in Berlin. So far the best Austrian food I have tested in Berlin... We went there for dinner. The staff was really nice. The place itself is very minimalistic, I find it nice, some might argue that it lacks special charme. At the start of the meal you get the usual bread with butter, which in this case comes from the own bakery. I mention this because the bread was excellent. Our food was also very good. We had a Wiener Schnitzel which was moist and had a nice butter taste and the Käsespätzle which were really great. The Spätzle were especially good as they use a mix of 4 cheeses which gave them a nice creamy texture. I certainly will go back there. read more

Love this place! Clean but quirky decor and a fab menu of modern takes on German food. I couldn't resist the wiener schnitzel, and mm...it was delicious. For me, high-quality schnitzel is all about the accoutrements (kartoffelsalat, etc) and here they (and the schnitzel itself) were light, fresh, and well done. It's cool how the kitchen is open. When I was there, they gave me a flyer for cooking classes, too...really wish I'd been able to take advantage of it. I was with some relatives who don't speak German and the staff were very courteous and spoke English with them, though the service was a tad slow. Dinner on a Sunday night in Berlin can be tricky. Lots of places are closed, so make sure to check before you head out. We went to Alpenstueck with a couple of friends and had a good time, with a few glitches in service. We arrived and ordered a bottle of wine while we were deciding on food, plus a bottle of tap water. To be completely honest, I'd had way too much to drink the night before, so really felt dehydrated. I hate paying for water to be bottled and shipped around the world when I'm somewhere with perfectly good tap water, so had no qualms about asking for this. (yes, this is a bugbear of mine, but I don't think it's particularly crazy). The host accepted the wine order but said we had to order a bottle of water because "they didn't have any vessels to put the tap water into." (not kidding). We were with a native German speaker, and an English person who lives in Berlin and speaks fluent German, so it wasn't a lost in translation moment. We ordered starters and mains each, and again asked for a round of tap water for the table to go along with our wine. The waiter gave the same line, but we indicated the 750ml mineral water bottle which we'd just finished in under 5 minutes and offered it as a vessel which seemed capable of putting tap water into. He finally understood that we weren't kidding, and brought out a wine carafe of water. .2L carafe. Americans, this is less than a large glass of wine. For four people. And was sniffy about it. The native German speaker asked him about it, and was told that it was "the norm" in Berlin, even though it wasn't something we'd experienced anywhere else. Our starters came, and were very good. I had a jerusalem artichoke (sunchoke) soup, one person had a goat-cheese salad, and two people had rustic meat ravioli. There was a full vegetarian menu option available, and plenty of veg options to order as well. But we were still thirsty. We asked for more tap water. The English/German person explained that we weren't just being cheap, but genuinely wanted tap water, at which time the waiter slightly perked up. He'd been incredibly stiff before, borderline rude, but warmed up to being neutral. And brought a couple of carafes of tap water, and we all just figured we'd drink plenty of water when we got home. Mains were good. Two of us had the cheese spaetzle, which was a generous portion and very tasty. One person had steak, and another had breaded veal. Everyone was happy. When the bill came, I was amused to see that one 750ml bottle of water was more than the cost of my starter. Which completely explains why the guy was a PITA about bringing "free" water. Our food was good, a solid 4 out of 5 stars, but the service was bad to start and only warmed to decent. I would consider going back, but the whole water thing left a bad, money-grubbing, impression, so we'll see. read more

Second time here. Don't remember what I had last time. This time had the salad with salmon. The English translation, I think, was "stained". Not sure what that means and I forget das deutsches Wort, so can't look it up. The stained salmon was good, fresh greens, standard vinegarette. My appetizer was Kalbstafelspitz(spelling?) - light thinly sliced meat. My better half had grilled Ziegenkaese with Thymian und Honig dressing. I would get this next time instead. And for her main, she ordered the Wienerschnitzel, as did 80% of the restaurant. The cucumber salad side was very good, almost as good as Grandma's. The potato salad was disappointing. Sarah Wiener's is much better, but then again they use bacon, the magic ingredient. Dessert was Champagne mousse. Wow!! Tried an Obstbrand, somethin' von Spätburgunder. Enjoyable but definitely not an Islay single malt. Must do more research into Obstbraenden. Decor is minimal and white. Friendly helpful Bedienung. The menus were a bit rattier than I would expect for such a nice place. And it does get quite loud in there. (hey Qype, is this a better review? This place is quite untypical for Berlin. The staff is professional. The food is from the northern alps. The interior does not look like my living room (but I'd like my living room to look like this). The people that go there do not seem to be unemployed. Excelent food. Steep prices. The place is about good food - period. I came here to impress my Board of Directors. It worked well. The Menu the cook suggested was excellent, and the wine fit very well - exactly as it should be when you go to a Restaurant. As the minimalist interior does not distract from the main reason you are here THE FOOD - it is not really neccessary to talk much about it either. It is cool (as in cold and as in do I fit in?), and when the restaurant gets full, the place tends to echo a bit like a train station. But we did not come to talk - we came to eat. read more

Apparently the hostess here used to work at Soho House so EVERYONE there recommends it for commission I assume. I decided to try it despite bad yelp rating. Let me tell you / it was BAD beyond belief. Room & ambience are very nondescript. In fact I viewed the kitchen which was not pretty & the bathroom doors from our table . Food arrives on a plate that looks like school cafeteria ware. I think the schnitzel was made yesterday. I mean really - 25 euro for old schnitzel & a few boiled potatoes & some over cooked asparagus?? Maybe there is some German tradition there that is lost in translation . But I could not eat my dinner because it was tasteless & I felt very ripped off. We went to Lokal for a a wonderful cheese plate, salad, much better wine & atmosphere laughably for a better price. We recently ate dinner at Alpenstick. I am wondering what all the excitement is about. Our waitor, while a cute fresh-faced kid who looked about 15, seemed overwhelmed when a large dinner party arrived adjacent to our table. After that, we were forgotten and had to repeatedly flag down service staff to order food and drink. For my appetizer, I ordered the pumpkin soup. It had way too much nutmeg in it and was too sweet. For dinner, I ordered the stroganoff. The meat was dry and bland. I could cook a juicier, more flavorfull stroganoff in my crockpot at home. My plate also served some type of cubed mystery vegetable that I didn't care for; it reminded me of Tyson's TV dinners with cubed carrots and mystery vegetables from long ago. My boyfriend ordered the Shnitzel. It was flavorful and much more tasty than Borchardt's Shnitzel. That was the one highlight of this meal. All in all, I wouldn't bother returning to this restaurant. We had a great time when we went with an exceptionally large party. They even accommodated the vegetarians! I love their spin on German Cuisine - though still a bit heavy handed, it is far more tasty than many of the more traditional joints we visit. Service is kind, if a bit tentative at times. I had dinner at Alpenstueck on a Sunday night. The staff was welcoming and friendly. As a starter I had goat's cheese salad, a very fresh and tasty dish. As a main course I had the potato quiche with lamb's lettuce: the potato quiche tasted everything but freshly made, just dry. It rather reminded me of badly cooked Spanish omelette. I finished off with an espresso and decided not to eat there anymore. When my dessert was served it was so excellent I instantly forgot about my very mediocre main course: rhubarb compote with poached egg whites and ginger. I will definitely eat there again; hopefully next time the chef is in a better mood for main courses. read more

Just wandered in here late one evening on way back to our airbnb in the Mitte section of Berlin. The food was creative and delicious and wonderful service. There were only a few other tables occupied and so the space was quiet and relaxing. We started with the herring tartare which was beautiful to look at and tested even better, then on to the roast veal and fish of the day with lentils and and asparagus. I didn't try the veal but my husband's plate was empty ! My fish was superb. We ended with a creme brulee and a beerenauslese and the night was a success! I highly recommend it. read more

Mate and I had a delightful meal here. Staff was so pleasant, the room is lovely - bright but somehow still cozy despite there being a lot of white. The wall of logs really warms it up and gives it that special Scandinavian feel. However it's definitely a German restaurant. I had sliced duck breast that arrived beautifully plated as well as perfectly cooked with a good deal of pink and truth be told, the perfect amount of tasty fat underneath the skin. Mate had weinerschnitzel which was the best we had in Berlin. The breading arrived puffed up which was surprising, but the taste was traditional and fab. My stomach is growling as I think about it! The traditional potato salad and cucumbers that came with his schnitzel were spot-on as well. We tried two German red wines which were intriguing; we don't know much about German reds but both were excellent and well recommended by our helpful and informative server.
