We were desperately hungry when we spotted this place. It was nearly 2 pm, but the owner invited us in. The restaurant was completely packed, but he gave us a table after 10 minutes. And the wine sure did help (fairly inexpensive, less than 10 euros per glass.) We ordered from the set menu. My SO's theme was raw -- he had salmon carpaccio for his appetizer. It was huge chunks of salmon that had been perfectly marinated in olive oil and other seasonings. Though this was his appetizer, it was very sizeable, and this one dish could probably satisfy one appetite. He also had the beef tartare, which he said was the best he had in France. I was craving duck, so got some Asian duck spring rolls, probably not the wisest thing to get in France, but it was yummy. I forgot what I got for my main, but remember sopping up the juice with the bread. With our two sizeable courses each, we were pretty full and didn't have room for dessert. This was a real find -- big groups of locals went here for lunch, great prices, and good food. The owner/waiters thought we were Japanese tourists but were still very kind to us. It was weird seeing another Asian in the kitchen working -- almost wanted to nod to him and acknowledge him.

Some highlights: The amuse bouche course was incredible end-to-end, but what really stood out for me was a blue masa shell holding mussel, sauce, and microgreens/herbs/flowers. The mix of the different herbs, the savory salinity of the mussel, and the sauces was wonderfully complex, yet also harmonious. The poached sea trout with pumpkin and horseradish ice cream was very satisfying. The mix of poached trout and horseradish cream was very familiar, yet the twist of making the horseradish a wholly different temperature and texture was really surprising and innovative. The monkfish in adobo was another extraordinary dish. I have only had monkfish liver before, but the way they were able to perfectly cook the monkfish gave it a texture and flavor reminiscent of lobster. With the spice of the adobo, it was a really well balanced dish. Additionally, all of the wines that we tried were also notable and delicious. Frenchie has definitely earned its Michelin star, and I wouldn't be surprised if it has another by the next time I come back.

I've tried to reserve a table on multiple occasions, but they never seem to pick up the phone. Whenever I show up (at twelve on the dot, since it gets packed 'til there's no breathing room), the waitresses give me a quick scowl when I say "no reservation." By the time they seat me, their grudge is gone, and I've decided to order everything I saw at the counter on the way in. It all looks that good. I usually make a choice along the lines of two salads (you can get more), and maybe a tarte (quiche, pizza slice, Spanish-style tortilla composed of various vegetables). There are lots of assortments; you can even get a third salad. There are dishes of the day, options like chicken scaloppini (best to get with only one salad, as those breaded hunks are thick), mouthwatering cakes and other desserts that will tempt you on the way in, and a variety of sweet artisanal beverages. Don't bother with the funky flavored scones--they're small, overpriced, and not very tasty. Pro tip: sit on the ground floor if you can. The windowless basement seating area gets crowded and loud. Or, better yet, get your salads to go and eat them in the neighboring park!

I came over for lunch and was deeply impressed with the food coming out of the kitchen at this restaurant with a rather small yet minimalist and cozy dining room. There are several tasting menu options but I went with the 90-euro one with four courses, although there were additional small dishes here and there. If there is a description that could fit this restaurant's culinary philosophy, it would be playfulness with technical sophistication. Each dish had unexpected surprises but that didn't compromise the execution. I already sensed this restaurant was not playing around when I tasted absolutely juicy clams submerged in white wine foam that was absolutely delicious. Pollock that came with artichoke, onion and peanut sauce was also excellent. Sometimes unexpected surprises came for more decorative purposes than adding another dimension to the dish. I wouldn't have thought popcorn belongs to a dish of pigeon and corn, but there was nothing to complain about the texture of perfectly cooked pigeon meat. The desserts also showed flashes of brilliance. I was surprised to see avocado in a dessert plate, but it worked very well with white chocolate and banana pieces. I haven't seen ice cream made of pepper flavor and it somehow created unique flavor with mango and herb cream. My favorite of the three dessert plates, however, was the milk ice cream that was just absolutely refreshing. The restaurant has some nice wine list, so definitely try a glass or two. Akrame is another casual-looking restaurant with very put together staffs with attentive and professional services. The restaurant is another place worth visiting during your time in Paris. If you want to see technical brilliance behind some unexpected combination of ingredients, Akrame will definitely make you happy.

When we entered, a server directed us to the host station by the bar. My husband had printed out his email with the address & the reservation, and he had made some notes on it about things to consider on the menu. We were seated at a nice window table A woman did come right away to ask about sparkling or still water. Wines are by the glass--no bottles were listed that we saw. The server just stood over us for several minutes while we were looking at the menu, which was a little uncomfortable. So my husband explained we would need a few minutes. She seemed offended. Then the male host came over and insisted on seeing the paper my husband had with the email. He took it out of my husband's hand and started trying to read my husband's notes. I asked if there was a problem with the reservation--had they found it? The man said something about wanting to know if it was prepaid (do they do gift certificates in Paris? We had no idea what he meant). I said no, it was not, so he left again. The menu is prix fixe. A different server came to take our order. She was more upbeat and jovial. The amuse bouche was a pickled herring. I ordered the pumpkin veloute soup, which was yummy. Then I had the vegetarian plate, which was fine but not memorable: squash, mushrooms, and an egg on top. My husband ordered the sausage plate. At the end, I requested the check (l'addition"). The server asked twice if we wanted to add a tip to put on the card. I have not had that happen before in Paris, where the tipping conventions are different, and a 15% service charge is included in the prices by law. I asked if it was not included ("compris") and she said no, it was not. I did leave a cash tip. But all in all, some of those awkward moments with the staff detracted from the experience.

Where we sat looked like a library before with books all over the room. It could be that we came at a bad time, nonetheless, there's other restaurants in Paris to try before I come back to Le Fumoir.

It is not where most of the restaurants are and that made it a nice quiet evening. My wife found this on Google on a Monday night. We had no reservations at 6:45 and got in without issues. If you are without reservations, it is worth asking if they have space. The space can be limited if you have larger group. For two people, it's relatively easier. First of all, our server was absolutely incredible. A perfect representation of the restaurant. He spoke English very well and answered all questions about the dishes. This made it very easy to decide what to get and avoid food allergies. I wish I could remember his name. He's a younger guy. Most of the dishes are uniquely flavored and delicious. They are smaller portions but really are worth the price. You are going to enjoy the experience with the smaller crowd. (I can honestly justify the cost simply with the square footage you get here compared to other restaurants in town. You get plenty of elbow room.) Plus, The chefs are really good at their jobs. Everything was perfectly cooked and well presented. The only caveat, I cannot suggest the rabbit stuffed Ravioli unless you like smoked fish. The smoke fish overwhelmed the rabbit dish and invaded my burps the rest of the night.
