My first Chinese restaurant that I hit up in Copenhagen. I was roaming around Vesterbro area and saw a flock of Chinese tourist walking into the restaurant, which is always a good sign for me.
As I came in, I had asked if they make any dishes off the menu and was told they do. So I ordered shui zhu niu rou or water cooked beef. I was pleasently surprised that the dish (which is not really cooked in water, but in a chili sauce) was quite good. The beef was very tender and broth was flavorful and had good heat. Veggies used were bean sprout, which was a first for me, but was none-the-less good. With a bowl rice, I was in heaven.
I decided to come back the next day to see if my experience was a fluke or not. The second time around I decided to order my two favorite dishes, jiaozi (dumplings) and hui guo rou (twice cooked spicy pork belly). The jiaozi was not bad, but it did not blow my mind either. I felt the dumpling skin could have been thinner. The bottom of the dumpling was crisp and provided contrasting texture to the rest of the dumplings.
The hui guo rou was a let down. Normally the pork belly would have been slightly crisp if the wok was hot enough. The dish lacked the flavor of the wok which also explained why the pork belly was not crisped. I did not like that there were so many veggies acting as fillers. Normally the only veggies used is garlic chives. To top it all off, the dish was not at all spicy.
I assume they have their specialty Sichuan dishes, but generally it does not seem to be their forte. I would have given 4 stars if based from the shui zhu niu rou alone, but the let down from the hui guo rou could not be over looked. read more
