In my mind, the perfect cafe perfectly captures the "third place" concept - cozy enough to feel like home. I think the Dutch call that vibe - 'gezellig'. The perfect cafe also has a well-rounded selection of teas, coffees, sandwiches, cakes, and a solid soup of the day. Finally, because I am also slightly basic, the perfect cafe must be insta-worthy from the design of its store to the plating of its food and coffees. Sand's, Cakes and Bubbles is a perfect cafe. From the cozy decor, to the menus hung cutely on clothing hangers, to the beautifully garnished food and drinks, everything about Sand's Cakes and Bubbles is insta-worthy and gezellig to the power of lekker. And yes .. lekker. I have had my share of sandwiches in my lifetime, and the way they balance flavours in their sandwiches at Sand's, Cakes & Bubbles is really jaw-dropping. All of those places are great, but this one is still worth considering because: A) It's next to the Pieterskerk, aka in an area with relatively few other cafes (ok you could walk 3 minutes down the road to the busy area but one gets lazy when living in such a small town) B) It's still relatively unknown and has an unpronounceable name, so you're very likely to get a table C) They make great coffee, and I've heard they have insanely good sandwiches. D) It's adorable and very cozy. E) I'm pretty sure it faces the part of the square where they used to hang people. So; I managed to time my train to the airport wrong again. I have an awkward twenty minutes to kill…read morewhen I look up and notice a few people in a funky looking area above. The beer and wine place is closed (I guess I can't start my vacation here at 10am!) but the coffee shop is open. I've accidentally found what I had been searching for in my area for a bit -- a relatively quiet, but still bustling coffee shop intended for you to sit and relax -- or work without feeling like you are hindering the place's business. I will surely bring my laptop back and work here in the future. But I'm still on a time crunch and coffee shops can be quite slow, so I'm nervous. I sit by the train board they have in the coffee shop and order quickly. My toasti and cappuccino came with in 5 minutes (I was timing ha!). The tosti hit the spot -- but by no means over the top or gourmet - exactly what I was hoping for before heading to the airport. I'm really happy to have found this place!

Oh well, better late than never :P With the recent renovation of the Central Station the 'stationsHuiskamer' was opened for people to meet up after traveling, do some work or just enjoy a good coffee, tea or lunch. A similar location was also opened at Rotterdam Central. I visited the 'stationsHuiskamer' for the first time, last week, and was really surprised by it's nice vibe, relaxed entourage and comfortable seats and tables to work at. Besides good coffee they also offer free WiFi and power plugs all over. It's spacious and the view inside the station is pretty cool. So I'm very happy with this place and will be using it as my favorite (co)working location when I will be visiting The Hague again.

Also, though they offer iced tea, which is a rarity in Europe, and I was able to get one to go, they did not tell me it was sweetened, and I hate sugar in my tea. Oh well. The food wasn't served in the traditional tier display. The staff served us the high tea treats in two rounds. The 1st round were the savory treats: spinach quiche slices, scones, mini cucumbers sandwiches, and other pastries. The 2nd round were the sweet treats: various cakes and brownies slices. We were very full in the end and took the leftovers home. Overall, we enjoyed the high tea experience here.
