So, I was on a short stopover here and needed to eat a few times. Helsinki, and Finland, love their coffee shops and sitting there with coffee or tea and a pastry is just fine with me. I did that a few times and, not only that, with this being such a staple of their culture, some coffeehouses keep late(r) hours.
I also wanted to eat lunch at places the locals might visit. Based on other sites and publications, I narrowed it down to two places I was considering: one was a comfort food and soup type lunch buffet restaurant (ravintola) in the center and this one - Restaurant (Ravintola) Fond. Fond was to the west of the city, but not far from a Metro station. It was actually fun to get here since their excellent Metro system weaves around and across islands and land masses crisscrossed by water. Incidentally, a "ravintola" is an eatery of some kind and can even include places where the business is largely comprised of the lunch crowd. I saw a large "ravintola" upon leaving the main station and got all excited because I thought they might be ravioli places, but that's probably not the case, albeit not impossible.
Restaurant Fond is popular. It makes for good value and the choices of what to eat are more than respectable. There are the main dishes, side dishes, a salad bar, soup, a tasty variety of breads, and a dessert station, which featured something that resembled a sundae. You put these platters together on your own. It is cafeteria style. The menu rotates. I was happy with everything I ate, but especially liked the two small pieces of salmon I put on my plate.
The personnel at Fond who work in the cashier's area and work in the kitchen are very pleasant and happy to answer any questions. Also, I assumed it would be in a strip mall of sorts. However, as I was walking toward it through the leafy suburb of Lauttasaari dusted in snow, I didn't see anything ahead of me that looked anything like a strip mall. Instead, it is in a newer commercial building next to the water. You go into the lobby and go up to the 5th floor, if I recall. The interior is minimalistic in that Nordic sort of way and it's very clean. It also has windows all around, so it's bright.
Because of Fond's popularity for lunch, you may be near to or even sharing a large table with local people. I would have never imagined that, being born on a palm lined street in the Los Angeles area, I would be breaking bread with Finns at a suburban lunch joint frequented by locals. The reciprocal might have also applied to them. It made for an interesting and unique experience.
Fond will make for a casual but hearty lunch experience. You won't be breaking bread with Jane Fonda, who I thought of upon seeing its name in the various guides, or anyone of that societal strata. However, I will suggest a 4 word directive that would imply 4 stars:
"Become fond of Fond"
Or, I can simply assign a star for each letter of word F-O-N-D. I recommend making the interesting trek to Lauttasaari, which is not ridiculously far from the center of this capital city, and eating here. read more
