It was initially St. John the Baptist Hospital. Later it was a hostel and an inn. Since 1898 it has been in the same family as a hotel and later a restaurant. Ate here with our tour from Viking. Our tour guide, Thiago, was a wealth of information. We had the Spaetzle since we don't eat pork. It was quite good. So cheesy! For dessert, the creme caramel was delicious. Try the apfelschorle. A very popular drink in Germany, it is half apple juice and half sparkling water. So refreshing on a hot, hot summer day in Rothenberg. It was a little over cooked and dry but having the onions and gravy covering it helped make it a little more enjoyable and I did eat it all. Dinner portion was huge so I'm glad my husband helped me eat the salad and fries. I wouldn't order the pork steak again tho, mainly because the menu had so many other choices. Hubs also ordered Dunkel beer and I had still water and our total bill was €25. Service was friendly and relaxed. Our waiter spoke great English and was helpful with questions we had about the menu. The historic decor throughout the hotel is a nice touch. Staff and owners are welcoming. My wife fell off the train when we first got there, hurting her foot, and they were very helpful. The atmosphere is the perfect for any tourist which is probably the majority of people dining here. If you're reading this you're probably a tourist too, and this fits the bill of the perfect dinner spot on your trip. The food was excellent the soup tasted almost the same as my grandmother used to make. An excellent old world Bavarian taste. The duck was perfectly cooked and very flavourful. A wonderful traditional Bavarian meal that I think most people would find a real treat. Since most people are here for a day or two I would put this on the list of places to check out while you're in town. Reservations are recommended but we made ours earlier in the day.
