After 10 days in Switzerland where restaurant prices are stupid expensive, German prices were a welcomed relief to my wallet. My wife and I both saw the roasted pork knuckle on their hanging menu and just had to have it. As it ended up, my son and I had the knuckle while my wife had her favorite sauerbraten dish. My son's girlfriend had some small bratwurst looking sausages with sauerkraut and potato pancakes. All the meats and sausages were very good. The nice crispy skin on the knuckles was really yummy. My wife's sauerbraten was tasty and tender. For me, the 'Kartoffelknödel' or potato balls (referred to as gnocchi on the menu were awful... at least for me anyway. I've hung wallpaper with paste like these 'potato balls' were made of. Just terrible. Wish I could offer a good alternative, but I didn't try the other side dishes. The beer (vom fass/tap) was nice and cold... and served in giant beer steins. So go for the pork knuckle... pass on the "Kartoffelknödel."

We had the Zwiebelkuchen (special) and Käsesuppe to start. Both fantastic for the adults and the kids. Unfortunately they were out of brats (not sure how that happens in Germany) during our visit, and that's what my son wanted. But he switched to the kid schnitzel with fries while both girls had the Spätzel. All three were very happy. My wife had the adult schnitzel, which was tasty although she declared the edges to be dry. My mom had the Käsespätzel, which was delicious anders oniony. I had a couple of beers and the ravioli, which were stuffed with heaven and happiness. Service was very pleasant and at the typical German leisurely pace, so it took a bit less than two hours. Perfect for us and what we're used to a this point, although I know that bothers some Americans. For all six of us the bill came to only €66. Great price, excellent food, competent friendly service. Brought some friends back to this place while they were touring Rothenburg about 8 months after our first visit. Food and service still fantastic. I had a roast pork with coleslaw and potato dumplings. The most tender pork I've ever tasted, seriously. The sauce was so good that I used it for potato dumplings as well. Coleslaw is not mayonnaise based like often seen in US ,but this one is flavorful with adequate amount of vinegar in it, and not sour at all. If you come to this wonderful town, please dine in here. You will not be disappointed. BTW, the hotel is as good as the restaurant. Really right in the heart of everything, yet quiet at night. The staff is super friendly and professional.

The grub is good, but the service is spectacular! So friendly, so inviting, so accommodating! A decent beer selection, which goes without saying (writing), and at fair prices. All of the other entrees our table ordered were similarly unimpressive. The best part of the meal was the Gold Ochsen beers, which are good but not particularly great. After our meal, the server was quick to point out that we could leave a tip for his service. I guess rules of etiquette can be confusing for tourists from other countries, but to me that is always inappropriate.
