I had originally planned on doing a tour of the monastery before paying a visit to the cheese shop, however that first step never took place as tours are only offered in German. Ich spreche kein Deutsch. So, once your beyond the big stone wall separating this place from the rest of the town, the cheese shop is located in one of the smaller buildings on the grounds. When you walk in, directly in front of you is the cheese display. A variety of hard and soft cheeses made on site are available. There were a few items available on a small table for sampling. Since I was planning on buying cheese to bring back to the states, I needed it to be vacuum-packed and a hard cheese. Can't imagine trying to get a soft cheese back. While there were a lot of tempting softer cheeses available, I did find a few good sized pieces of their Berg-Kase, which was available on that small table for sampling. The owner is really the centerpiece of the place --- friendly, conversant in several languages, and happy to tell how he followed the girl of his dreams to Switzerland 30+ years ago. (The only other staff member we met has an annoying affinity for loud vacuum cleaners). Rolling in post-hike on a Saturday, the owner mentioned he was out of several fillings; in particular, the eggplant-and-peppers Betenjan that grabbed my eye first wasn't available. That turned out to be fine, as the standards he did have were excellent. Our group ended up with a mix of lamb Shish Kebab, veggie Falafel, and simple Hummus. All were heavily laden with extras --- veggies, lettuce, a sweet chutney that nicely complemented the main flavors, and hot sauce to order. The hummus and falafel options are variations on a theme --- either a large scoop of hummus and two falafel balls, or 6+ falafel balls and a small dollop of hummus. The lamb in the shish kebab is in large, tender chunks, and nicely roasted. The bread is much more substantial than many pitas --- more of a crusty roll, but so filled with goodies that the ratios are still right. Drinks are fairly standard --- a few beers and sodas, boxed Ayran yogurt drink, and a giant urn of oddly spiced tea by the glass. Definitely a must-eat for a day around Solothurn.

Zum Hut ist eine Kaffee- und Weinbar mit sehr freundlichem Service, einem tollen Angebot, und…read morebesonderem Charme. Aber der Reihe nach.. Der Empfang war sehr freundlich, die Bedienung hat auch gerne und gut ihre besonderen Getränke oder Speisen erläutert. Die Speisekarte wechselt täglich und soweit ich sehen konnte werden die Gerichte frisch zubereitet. Ich habe eine der Spezialitäten des Hauses, Hackbraten, gewählt. Schein mir auf den zweiten Blick dann doch etwas seltsam ("hast Du wirklich grad für rund 18 Franken ein Stück Hackbraten bestellt??"), doch ich wurde positiv überrascht. Interessante Kombination mit Kräutern und leckerer Tomatensauce, und auch die Bratkartoffeln dazu waren frisch und knusprig in der Pfanne gebraten. In einem Café soll natürlich auch der Kaffee gut sein, und das ist er meiner Meinung nach. Keine Offenbarung, sondern ein solider guter Cappuccino mit einer schönen stabilen Milchschaumhaube (trotz Schokopulver hielt der Milchschaum bis zum Schluss - dass er weniger wurde lag nur daran, dass ich ihn zwischendurch gelöffelt habe). Die Bohnen (Marke: Café Noir) sind ebenfalls gut. Auf der Karte stehen nicht nur viele Weine, sondern auch viele ausgefallene alkoholfreie Getränke, z. B. Bitterorangen-Limonade, Rhabarber-Limonade, Holunder-Sirup. So haben auch die Nicht-Weintrinker was zum Aussuchen und Probieren :-) Da es sich um das ehemalige Hutmachergeschäft handelt hat das Erdgeschoss grosse Schaufenster nach draussen mit viel Licht, ist aber etwas klein. Dafür gibt es eine superenge Wendeltreppe nach oben (bei Gegenverkehr muss man sich einigen wer zurück geht, aneinander vorbei geht nicht) in den ersten Stock, in dem man sich fast wie in der Stube einer Familie fühlt, in die noch ein paar Tische gestellt wurden. Auch ein bequemes Sofa gibt es hier. Außerdem gibt es noch ein kleines grünes Fleckchen draußen mit 7 Tischen, zwar direkt am Kreisel gelegen, aber mit schöner Umrandung aus Hecken und Blumen. Fazit: War ein toller Besuch mit tollem Essen, guten Getränken, superfreundlicher Bedienung und einem außergewöhnlichen Ambiente. Ich komme gerne wieder!
